Item American Jewish Philanthropy: Overview of Research between 2000 and 2020(Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, 2023-09) Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, Indiana UniversityThis article provides an overview of research on American Jewish philanthropy since 2000. We describe how this field is being studied and call attention to gaps in existing scholarship. The review sheds light on an important philanthropic community and reveals the difficulty of defining American Jewish philanthropy and studying its giving patterns. We show that several areas of Jewish philanthropy remain understudied, including the scope and trends of giving, changes in organized Jewish giving, generational succession sustaining Jewish philanthropy, and the growing importance of donor-advised funds. The review provides an up-to-date collection of sources beneficial to scholars who research nonprofit organizations and philanthropy and are interested in studying Jewish philanthropy and suggests several paths for future research.Item Charitable Crowdfunding: Who Gives, to What, and Why?(2021-03-31) Osili, Una; Bergdoll, Jon; Pactor, Andrea; Ackerman, Jacqueline; Houston, PeterThe growth of online giving signals a promising future for crowdfunding and offers donors another avenue for their generosity. This report provides details about how crowdfunding fits within the philanthropic landscape, who crowdfunding donors are, their motivations for using this giving vehicle, how they differ from typical charitable donors, the kinds of causes they support, and both donor and non-donor perceptions of this giving vehicle. Additionally, results from survey questions about charitable behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic and national reckoning on social and racial justice enhance the report.Item Generational Succession in American Giving: Donors Down, Dollars Per Donor Holding Steady But Signs That It Is Starting to Slip(Sage, 2018-10) Rooney, Patrick M.; Wang, Xiaoyun; Ottoni-Wilhelm, Mark; Lilly Family School of PhilanthropyComparing two generations at the same point in their life cycles, four decades apart, indicates that average giving to charitable organizations (not including congregations) by Baby Boom families has remained roughly in line with the level of giving done by the Greatest and Silent generations, but that average giving by GenX and Millennial families is lower. All three generations exhibit the confluence of two divergent trends: lower percentages who give large amounts, but among families who do give large amounts, levels of giving compared with donors in previous generations are similar if not higher. The two divergent trends also characterize giving to religious congregations. The second report in this series, Focus Group Research on US Donor Participation, highlighted the growing donor demand for increased engagement and education, and the need to demonstrate impact clearly. Subscription-based giving presents an opportunity to retain donors through curated content and engagement.
