Item A tradition of giving(2016-05-19) Osili, Una; Clark, Chelsea; Bergdoll, JonathanThis project examines an underexplored topic—intra-family connections across generations (as opposed to inter-family connections)—and takes it one step further. The study provides a more useful framework for understanding the transmission of giving attitudes and behaviors within families than what was previously available using a traditional generational lens.Item Generational Succession in American Giving: Donors Down, Dollars Per Donor Holding Steady But Signs That It Is Starting to Slip(Sage, 2018-10) Rooney, Patrick M.; Wang, Xiaoyun; Ottoni-Wilhelm, Mark; Lilly Family School of PhilanthropyComparing two generations at the same point in their life cycles, four decades apart, indicates that average giving to charitable organizations (not including congregations) by Baby Boom families has remained roughly in line with the level of giving done by the Greatest and Silent generations, but that average giving by GenX and Millennial families is lower. All three generations exhibit the confluence of two divergent trends: lower percentages who give large amounts, but among families who do give large amounts, levels of giving compared with donors in previous generations are similar if not higher. The two divergent trends also characterize giving to religious congregations. Although “dollars per donor holding steady or up” describes Millennial, GenX, and Baby Boom families compared with the Greatest and Silent generations, when the former three generations are compared with each other, there are some indications that average giving among donors is starting to slip.Item #GivingTuesday: What We Know Now(2019-12-03) Pruitt, Anna; TeKolste, RebeccaThis report seeks to investigate existing research about crowdfunding for nonprofit organizations using the lens of #GivingTuesday as a way to focus on the questions, concerns, and potential for this relatively new tool for giving to nonprofit organizations.Item Charitable Crowdfunding: Who Gives, to What, and Why?(2021-03-31) Osili, Una; Bergdoll, Jon; Pactor, Andrea; Ackerman, Jacqueline; Houston, PeterThe growth of online giving signals a promising future for crowdfunding and offers donors another avenue for their generosity. This report provides details about how crowdfunding fits within the philanthropic landscape, who crowdfunding donors are, their motivations for using this giving vehicle, how they differ from typical charitable donors, the kinds of causes they support, and both donor and non-donor perceptions of this giving vehicle. Additionally, results from survey questions about charitable behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic and national reckoning on social and racial justice enhance the report.Item The Giving Environment: Understanding How Donors Make Giving Decisions(IU Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, 2022-01-26) Indiana University Lilly Family School of PhilanthropyThis report is the second in this report series. The goal of the series is to provide data and analysis to better understand the causes and implications of the decline in donor participation shortly before the significant societal changes that took place in the United States in 2020, while also exploring the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the movements for social and racial justice on individuals giving decisions moving forward.Item The Giving Environment: Understanding How Donors Make Giving Decisions (Infographic)(IU Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, 2022-01-26) Indiana University Lilly Family School of PhilanthropyItem The Giving Environment: New Models to Engage Donors(IU Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, 2022-01-26) Indiana University Lilly Family School of PhilanthropyToday, donor retention remains a challenge and an opportunity for many nonprofit organizations. The onset of virtual interactions and engagement due to the COVID-19 pandemic, supports the need for enticing, digital content that effectively present nonprofit organizations’ impact and their ongoing need for support. The second report in this series, Focus Group Research on US Donor Participation, highlighted the growing donor demand for increased engagement and education, and the need to demonstrate impact clearly. Subscription-based giving presents an opportunity to retain donors through curated content and engagement.
