This session showcases how 3D printing technology can be used to construct flutes that retain their traditional characteristics, but with 21st-century appeal that engages today’s audiences. It features a demonstration of the 3D-printed flutes and the system that created them.
Description
This interactive session will showcase the collaboration of a flutist and a technologist to deploy 3D printing technology to construct flutes that retain their traditional characteristics, but with 21st-century appeal that will engage today’s audiences. It will begin with an overview of flute-making throughout the ages, emphasizing the role of technology in this evolution. The presenters will review the methodology used to create a flute using 3D printing technology, with a PowerPoint featuring screenshots of the hardware and software and a video of a flute being “printed.” They will highlight the advantages of 3D printing technology, such as complete control over the design, ease of scalability and modification, the ability to make a series of prototypes, and hardware that can quickly output the final product. Disadvantages include that the hardware has a significant impact on the quality of the output and that the materials currently available may not be “musical” enough. The session will demonstrate the viability and “musicality” of several 3D-printed flute prototypes through a comparison with hand-made Baroque flutes from the presenter’s collection using snippets of two popular Telemann Fantasias. The audience will have an opportunity to provide feedback on the demonstration and ask questions about the technology.
