Item Advancing Expert Human-Computer Interaction Through Music(Michigan Publishing, 2012-09) Smith, Benjamin D.; Garnett, Guy E.One of the most important challenges for computing over the next decade is discovering ways to augment and extend human control over ever more powerful, complex, and numerous devices and software systems. New high-dimensional input devices and control systems provide these affordances, but require extensive practice and learning on the part of the user. This paper describes a system created to leverage existing human expertise with a complex, highly dimensional interface, in the form of a trained violinist and violin. A machine listening model is employed to provide the musician and user with direct control over a complex simulation running on a high-performance computing system.Item The association of malocclusion and trumpet performance(2015) Kula, Katherine; Cilingir, H. Zeynep; Eckert, George; Dagg, Jack; Ghoniema, Ahmed; Department of Orthodontics and Oral Facial Genetics, School of DentistryObjective: To determine whether trumpet performance skills are associated with malocclusion. Materials and Methods: Following institutional review board approval, 70 university trumpet students (54 male, 16 female; aged 20–38.9 years) were consented. After completing a survey, the students were evaluated while playing a scripted performance skills test (flexibility, articulation, range, and endurance exercises) on their instrument in a soundproof music practice room. One investigator (trumpet teacher) used a computerized metronome and a decibel meter during evaluation. A three-dimensional (3D) cone-beam computerized tomography scan (CBCT) was taken of each student the same day as the skills test. Following reliability studies, multiple dental parameters were measured on the 3D CBCT. Nonparametric correlations (Spearman), accepting P < .05 as significant, were used to determine if there were significant associations between dental parameters and the performance skills. Results: Intrarater reliability was excellent (intraclass correlations; all r values > .94). Although associations were weak to moderate, significant negative associations (r ≤ −.32) were found between Little's irregularity index, interincisal inclination, maxillary central incisor rotation, and various flexibility and articulation performance skills, whereas significant positive associations (r ≤ .49) were found between arch widths and various skills. Conclusions: Specific malocclusions are associated with trumpet performance of experienced young musicians.Item Bass Guitar Anatomy Game(Merlot, 2004-01) Janke, ThomasThe Bass Parts Anatomy game is a simple interactive drag and drop interface that helps students to correctly indentify the various components of an electric bass guitar.Item Big Tent: an Immersive Inter-Media Performance Environment(Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, 2015-04-17) Smith, BenjaminConventional, static concert venues have significant deficiencies and problems when presenting artistic work made possible by recent developments in music and visual technology. These new works necessitate a highly flexible, configurable environment to support their dynamic, explorative nature. Big Tent, an environment for artistic and aesthetic research being constructed in this project, seeks to demonstrate, through repeatable concerts of original mixed-media compositions, a fully immersive, yet portable solution beyond the capacities of traditional performance venues. This exploration comprises designing and constructing the environment, followed by artistic research through the creation of new aesthetic works and performances.Item Can Music Touch the Heart? Commentary on the Benefits of Music Listening for People Living With Heart Failure(Elsevier, 2020-07) Fleming, Renée; Robb, Sheri L.; School of NursingPopular literary tradition depicts the heart as the seat of human emotion, and evidence of this is everywhere. We speak of music touching our heartstrings, we talk of having a change of heart, we place our hands over our hearts when we sing the national anthem. Of course, we know today that mental and emotional activity is centered in the brain, but can music actually affect our hearts? Is there medical and scientific evidence of music's effects on heart health?Item Cobarde Mil Veces(Aerie Records/ California State University, Los Angeles, 2015) Hoyos, ConcepcionThe Afro Latin Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Paul De Castro, the Cal State LA Afro Latin ensemble provides graduate and undergraduate students the opportunity to study and perform music from the rich traditions of Salsa and Afro latin music. The authors propose and test a contingency that may help resolve this controversy. Experimental results suggest that message reception is influenced by the interplay of two musical properties: attention-gaining value and music-message congruency. Increasing audience attention to music enhances message reception when the music evokes message-congruent (versus incongruent) thoughts.Item The Effects of Background Music in Advertising: A Reassessment(1989-06) Kellaris, James J.; Cox, Anthony D.Gorn's (1982) pioneering article on the effects of background music in advertising has spurred a significant controversy and inspired vigorous interest in the topic. Following the recommendation of Allen and Madden (1985), we conducted three experiments that attempted to replicate Gorn's results. Contrary to Gorn's findings, there was no evidence that product preferences can be conditioned through a single exposure to appealing or unappealing music.Item Enabling Live Presence: Dynamic Video Compression for the Telematic Arts(Michigan Publishing, 2012-09) Smith, Benjamin D.Telematic performance, connecting performing artists in different physical locations in a single unified ensemble, places extreme demands on the supporting media. High audio and video quality plays a fundamental role in enabling inter-artist communication and collaboration. However, currently available video solutions are either inadequate to the task or pose extreme technical requirements. A new solution is presented, vipr (videoimage protocol), which exposes a number of popular, robust video compression methods for real-time use in Jitter and Max. This new software has successfully enabled several inter-continental performances and presents exciting potentials for creative, telematic artists, musicians, and dancers.Item Festive Expressions of Ethnicity: National German-American Festivals in Indianapolis at the Turn of the Twentieth Century(2014) Rippel, Elena Marie; Wokeck, Marianne Sophia; Robertson, Nancy Marie, 1956-; Hoyt, Giles R.Expressions of German-American culture in Indianapolis reached a high point in the first decade of the twentieth century. Social clubs such as the Socialer Turnverein and the Maennerchor enriched the city’s cultural life through musical performances and athletic classes and provided a social outlet for their members. During this decade, these clubs played a large role in organizing two national festivals held in Indianapolis: a Turnfest (gymnastics festival) in 1905 and a Saengerfest (singing festival) in 1908. Examining the planning and implementation of the Turnfest and Saengerfest sheds light on how club leaders responded to their social and political environment at the beginning of the twentieth century, how the respective clubs’ members conceived of their ethnic and club identities, and how they represented these identities in the festivals.
