Item An Organizational Paradigm for Effective Academic Libraries(American Library Association, 1986-07) Lewis, David W.The organizational structures of academic libraries are conisdered in light of the work of a number of organizational theorists, and related work by librarians is reviewed. An organizational paradigm for effective academic libraries is developed based on this review. The content of bibliographic instruction varies between institutions and more importantly, between groups within the same institution. This article reminds us tht preparation for a library instruction class involves more than the "grabbing of materials" five minutes before the class arrives. The transition from print on paper to digital and electronic technolgies is transforming instruction, scholarly communication, and the storage and preservation of knowledge. What is required is not the automation of old sytems, but the restructuring of institutions. The drive for autonomy, needed for effective scholarship, and the push for standardization, needed to assure easy and open access to information, will create conflicts difficult to resolve. Universities must find new ways of funding and financing information services and new staffing patterns if they are to continue as effective learning and research institutions.Item Economics of the Scholarly Journal(American Library Association, 1989-11) Lewis, David W.This paper considers the economic nature of the scholarly journal from a theoretical perspective and concludes that it is what economists call a natural monopoly. Natural monopolies exist when the average price of the good falls over the range of demand, and unless a subsidy is provided the good will not be produced in the quantity that provides the most social benefit. the natural monopoly model of the scholarly journal sheds light on the issue of dual pricing and explains how scholarly publishing can be a highly profitable enterprise. Because subsidies should be easier to implement in electronic systems, this alternative may provide a more effective means of scholarly communication.Item Eight Truths for Middle Managers in Lean Times(Library Journal, 1991-09-01) Lewis, David W.The article considers how a middle manager should confront difficult economic times.Item Making Academic Reference Services Work(American Library Association, 1994-9) Lewis, David W.Recent discussion of reference service in academic libraries has considered alternative approaches to service and has called on academic reference librarians to play new roles. Absent from most of the discussion is an understanding that organizational changes are required if reference librarians are to accomplish what is being asked of them. Without these organization changes these new roles and responsibilities will be impossible. To make reference service in academic libraries effective five changes are required: (1) reference librarians must be given clear budgetary and programmatic authority; (2) the hierarchy must be flattened and reference librarians placed closer to the top of the organization; (3) support services must be provided so that reference librarians are not encumbered by nonprofessional tasks; (4) reference librarians should be brought together and not isolated in small departments; and (5) public services planning in priority setting should be done by reference librarians.Item Internet sources for nursing and allied health(Database is the property of Information Today, 1995-06) Gonzalez, Edward L.
