Abstract

Presenters will show one example of how to start and maintain a digital institutional repository. Though some philosophical debate regarding scholarly communication, copyright, and preservation issues will take place, the focus will be on dissecting IUPUI’s experience in implementing the open-source D-Space software and how the ideas put forth might be incorporated at librarians’ home campuses. The presenters will take participants through the process of implementing a digital institutional repository in a chronological fashion, beginning with assessing campus needs for such a collection. Participants will discuss benefits and challenges that might be associated with implementing a repository at this point. Presenters will then describe the database and workflow structure to participants, allowing time for participants to reflect on how an institutional repository might look at their campus. Finally, participants will learn about the presenters’ attempts to promote the service to faculty and discuss how they might get the word out on their campuses.
