dc.description.abstract | BACKGROUND Firearm violence continues to garner the attention of the media and public entities. The trends noted in 2022 will be used as a basis for continued monitoring and reporting of data in 2023. OBJECTIVE Examine trending in type, time, location, and demographics of fatal and non-fatal shooting incidents and victims in Indianapolis and provide a digest of reporting completed by IGVP in 2022. KEY FINDINGS The proportion of fatal and non-fatal shootings was steady throughout the year, with an average of 35% of shootings being fatal each quarter. February saw the least shootings (48% below average) while October saw the most (50% above the monthly average for the year). The first week of October (1st-7th) was the deadliest week of the year and also saw the most non-fatal shootings. October 6 and December 18 tied for the most shootings reported in a single day, making up 2% each of the total. Collectively, incidents occurring on Saturdays and Sundays comprised 63% of all shootings and 62% of shooting victims for the year. Victims aged 15-19 made up 23% of all victims but make up just 6% of the Indianapolis population. Those between 25 and 34 made up 27% of the total but comprise 16% of the population. In total, adults make up 71% of the population but comprised 92% of fatal shootings reported and 54% of reported non-fatal shootings in 2022. Males comprised 79% of shooting victims in 2022 but make up just 47% of the population while females make up 53% of Indianapolis’s population and 21% of shooting victims in the city in 2022. Of shooting reports where location was documented, almost half (40%) occurred at an apartment, house, or in a residential area. | |
