    Caring for Kids: Hard-to-Find Facts for Parents About Child Health & Development

    In 2001, the Riley Children’s Foundation sponsored Dr. Keener’s authorship of "Caring for Kids," and facilitated statewide distribution of several hundred thousand free copies to physicians and their patients around the state. The book offered a wealth of information and tips not found in traditional parenting books and was prepared by Dr. Keener and her staff with the input from other physicians, health care professionals, and parents throughout the state. In 2009, a second edition of "Caring for Kids" was written by Dr. Abigail Klemsz and Dr. Patricia Keener.

    The Care, Cure, and Education of the Crippled Child: A Study of American Social and Professional Facilities to Care for, Cure, and Educate Crippled Children

    Pages 24-25, 78, and 95-96 of this report mention the James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children. Page 93 discusses the Jesse Spalding Public School for Crippled Children in Chicago (designed by architect Dwight Heald Perkins and which opened in 1908), one of the country’s first day schools exclusively for children with disabilities. The school was named in honor of the father of Jessie Spalding Walker Landon, wife of Hugh McK Landon, first President of the James Whitcomb Riley Memorial Association. Jesse Spalding was a philanthropist and leader in Chicago’s lumbering industry

    Dr. Gregory A. Wilson recounts the beginnings of the Indiana Poison Control Center, which he founded at Riley Hospital for Children in 1979 and served as the medical director of until 1983.

    Margaret Martin Roth Award Winners, 1985-2024

    Margaret Martin-Roth was named Indiana Nurse of the Year in 1980 by the Central Indiana March of Dimes. She retired in 1985. An annual Margaret Martin-Roth Award was established at that time that honors the tradition of patient and family centered care practiced by Margaret during her tenure at Riley Hospital for Children. Note that no award was presented from 2013-2015.
