Item The Military & Veterans Community Index 2025: Measuring Giving to Military- and Veteran-Serving Organizations(2025-11-05) Azizi, Farrah; Bergdoll, Jon; Ackerman, Jacqueline; Donovan, Jennifer; Littlepage, Laura; Kou, Xiaonan; Gibson, Tasha; Koeshall, NathanThe Military & Veterans Community Index (MVCI) offers the most comprehensive data available on U.S. charitable organizations primarily dedicated to serving military members, veterans, and their communities and caregivers. Drawing on a decade of IRS data, the inaugural report reveals that these organizations received around $3.7 billion in philanthropic support in 2023, representing 0.67% of total U.S. charitable giving. The report highlights key trends across subsectors, showing that human services organizations serving veterans received the largest share of support in 2023 ($445 million), followed by those providing mental health services ($398 million), survivor care and memorializing ($397 million), and housing services ($353 million). Although giving to MVCI organizations has increased over time, the report finds that by most financial measures (such as revenues, expenses, and assets), these organizations have grown more slowly than the broader nonprofit subsector. However, payroll growth suggests a professionalizing workforce within the military and veterans nonprofit ecosystem. Together, these findings offer new insights into how philanthropy complements government services and responds to the evolving needs of military members, veterans, and their families.Item 2025 LGBTQ+ Index Research Brief(2025-09-30) Nguyen, Phuong Tran; Bergdoll, Jon; Ackerman, Jacqueline; Osili, Una; Kou, XiaonanThe LGBTQ+ Index provides the only systematically generated, comprehensive data on charitable organizations in the U.S. dedicated to the LGBTQ+ community and causes. This 2025 update includes data from 2012 to 2022, and shows that in 2022, philanthropic support for these organizations reached $908.9 million, an 8.8% increase over 2021, and a growth rate that outpaced overall charitable giving that year. Still, this support accounted for just 0.17% of total giving. This first report includes giving data from 2012 to 2022, and offers crucial insights into the characteristics of these organizations and trends in philanthropic giving by individuals, foundations, and corporations. Fundraisers and nonprofit leaders can use the CCI to benchmark their organizations and inform fundraising strategies. Donors and grantmakers can leverage the CCI to identify funding patterns and gaps to guide their giving strategies. Additionally, the CCI serves as a resource for scholars and researchers seeking to explore broader trends in philanthropy and charitable giving to communities of color. The CCI is a project of the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy’s Equitable Giving Lab, an initiative of the school that measures charitable giving to historically under-resourced groups.Item LGBTQ+ Index 2024: Measuring Giving To LGBTQ+ Organizations Infographic(Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, 2024-04) School of Philanthropy, Indiana University Lilly FamilyThe LGBTQ+ Index is the only comprehensive index of charitable organizations in the U.S. that serve LGBTQ+ causes and communities.
