This presentation examines the challenges faculty face in recognizing and addressing student mental health concerns. Through surveys and focus groups, the research identifies trends in faculty perceptions. The findings and recommendations highlight the need for enhanced faculty training, clearer guidelines, and standardized tools to improve faculty confidence and effectiveness in referring students to appropriate resources. The study ultimately advocates for a more unified vision across IU Indianapolis, ensuring faculty are well-equipped to support the diverse mental health needs of their students.Item The Win-Win of Effect Job Descriptions(2025-04-09) Wardhammar, Linda; Hayes, JoeItem Bridging the Gap: Student Access to IU Mental Health Resources: Chancellor's Student Mental Health Council Research Project 2025(2025-04-11) Uno, Yamana; Breur, Sofia; Carrillo, Casandra; Braught, Emily; Teske, Eric; Barthlow, Deanna; Lairmore, DavidThe Chancellor's Student Mental Health Council at Indiana University Indianapolis conducted a study to understand student access to campus mental health resources. This presentation, led by Yamana Uno, Sofia Breuer, and Casandra Carrillo, explores the barriers students face in accessing mental health support, such as time constraints, overwhelming processes, long wait times, and limited service hours. Through focus groups, the research identifies key issues. The findings highlight the need for improved communication strategies, targeted outreach, and enhanced resource accessibility. Recommendations for immediate, short-term, and long-term actions are proposed to address these challenges, including the development of webinars, active involvement of mental health professionals, and the implementation of a Canvas course to centralize resources. The study aims to foster a more supportive and accessible mental health environment for all students at IU Indianapolis.Item For the Common Good? An Exploration of Student Affairs Activities and Their Impact on Civic Engagement Outcomes for College Graduates(2025-03-18) Braught, EmilyThis study explores the impact of student affairs activities on civic engagement five years after graduation. Historically, early American higher education aimed to foster civic-minded individuals, but contemporary justifications for a college degree often emphasize job preparation and financial gain. Despite this shift, civic engagement remains a key goal in student affairs programs. Using data from the National Center for Educational Statistics Baccalaureate and Beyond (2016/2020) survey, the study analyzes whether participation in student organizations, leadership roles, fraternities/sororities, and intramurals correlates with increased civic behaviors, such as volunteering and voting. Findings highlight the varying influence of student affairs activities on civic engagement, suggesting a need for focused efforts to cultivate responsible citizens.Item From Program Review to Strategic Blueprint: Translating Assessment Insights Into Effective Strategic Planning(2025-03-20) Knarr, Mary; Braught, EIn higher education, time and space to meaningfully reflect and carefully plan is often limited. Translating the findings from program reviews into actionable strategic plans is crucial for maximizing staff time; utilizing institutional resources; and sustaining momentum. The presenters will delve into effective methodologies for bridging the gap between program review processes and the creation of comprehensive strategic plans.
