Item Associations between HPV vaccination among women and their 11–14-year-old children(Taylor & Francis, 2019-01-07) Kornides, Melanie; Head, Katharine J.; Feemster, Kristen; Zimet, Gregory D.; Panozzo, Catherine A.; Pediatrics, School of MedicineThe human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine has been available in the United States for over a decade. We sought to examine the associations between self-reported receipt of HPV vaccination among women and their 11–14-year-old children in 27 low-coverage states. Among the 3,261 mothers we surveyed, 18% reported receiving ≥1 dose of HPV vaccine. A significantly higher proportion of vaccinated women reported vaccination of their children compared to unvaccinated women (83% vs. 56%, p < .001). In multivariable logistic regression, vaccinated women (vs. unvaccinated) had 3.58 (95% CI: 2.81–4.56) times the adjusted-odds of vaccinating their children (≥1 dose HPV vaccine). Among unvaccinated children, vaccinated mothers (vs. unvaccinated) had 3.32 (95% CI: 2.09–5.26) times the adjusted odds of high intention to vaccinate their children in the next 12 months. We did not observe associations between mothers’ vaccination confidence and their vaccination status. We conclude that mothers who received ≥1 dose of HPV vaccine may be more likely to initiate or highly intend to initiate the HPV vaccine series for their children. This may have important implications for meeting population goals for HPV vaccination coverage as an increasing proportion of mothers are likely to be vaccinated over time.Item Integrative Review of the Knowledge, Barriers, and Facilitators of HPV Vaccination Among Latinx Migrant and Seasonal Farmworkers in the United States(2024-04-26) Hornberger, Sydney; Messmore, NikiINTRODUCTION: One subgroup of Latinx populations whose healthcare needs must not be ignored is migrant and seasonal farmworkers (MSFW) and their families. They face compounded political, social, and personal contexts which complicate healthcare access. Occupational carcinogen exposure increases MSFW’s risk of certain cancers, including cervical cancer. Although the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine prevents HPV infections and cancers, uptake among Hispanic adolescents remains suboptimal. Therefore, it is important to understand Latinx MSFW’s knowledge of HPV, barriers to, and facilitators of vaccination so culturally appropriate measures can bolster HPV vaccination. METHODS: Searches were conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science using key search terms. Results were evaluated for compatibility with inclusion/exclusion criteria, and selected articles were coded and evaluated via thematic analysis. RESULTS: Six studies of various designs were ultimately included in the review. While some Latinx MSFW have baseline knowledge about HPV and the vaccine, knowledge gaps remain. Participants expressed curiosity about how the vaccine works, contents, side effects, dosing, recommended age, and information about diseases it prevents. Although additional education and Latinx MSFW’s receptiveness to provider’s recommendations were cited as major facilitators, many barriers must be addressed. CONCLUSION: Providers must leverage Latinx MSWF’s existing knowledge, provide education, and facilitate vaccination to protect farmworker families from HPV and related cancers. It must become standard practice for providers to recommend the HPV vaccine to MSFW, who are receptive to this conversation. Increasing vaccination can decrease the disproportionate burden of HPV-related cancers on Latinx patients and facilitate access to healthcare services.Item Relationships between Health Behaviors and HPV Vaccine Receipt and Intentions among Undergraduate Women(Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, 2013-04-05) Van Antwerp, Leah R.; Winger, Joseph G.; Christy, Shannon M.; Mosher, Catherine E.The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine represents an important step in reducing cervical cancer incidence and mortality. In recent years, this vaccine has been routinely recommended for females under the age of 26; however, only one-third of adolescent females have initiated the 3-shot HPV vaccine series. Although a number of studies have identified predictors of HPV vaccination, few have examined its correlations with other health behaviors. Evidence suggests that health-enhancing behaviors (e.g., healthy diet, physical activity) tend to cluster together. In this study, we examined the relationships between health behaviors and HPV vaccine receipt and intentions among undergraduate women at IUPUI. Participants (N=286) completed an internet-based survey that included measures of health behaviors (e.g., diet and exercise, vaccination history, recent physical examination) as well as questions regarding HPV vaccine receipt and intentions (i.e., likelihood of being vaccinated). Participants were, on average, 19 years old (SD=1.9). The majority were Caucasian (75%), single (90%), sexually active (65%), and recipients of the HPV vaccine (58%). Results showed significant relationships between HPV vaccine receipt and the receipt of other medical care, including a flu shot in the past year (χ2(1, N=260)=3.88, p<.05), a Pap smear in the past three years (χ2(1, N=263)=6.49, p<.05), and a recent dental visit (r=.15, p<.05). Among those who had not received the HPV vaccine, increased HPV vaccine intentions were associated with the receipt of the flu shot in the past year (r=.19, p<.05) and the receipt of HIV testing (r=.19, p<.05). However, HPV vaccine receipt and intentions were not significantly related to engagement in any of the other health behaviors (e.g., diet and exercise). Findings suggest that HPV vaccine uptake and intentions to receive the vaccine are associated with the receipt of other preventative medical care among female undergraduates.Item A retrospective and prospective look at strategies to increase adolescent HPV vaccine uptake in the United States(Taylor & Francis, 2018) Head, Katharine J.; Biederman, Erika; Sturm, Lynne A.; Zimet, Gregory D.; Pediatrics, School of MedicineThe HPV vaccine debuted more than ten years ago in the United States and many strategies have been evaluated to increase HPV vaccination rates, which include not only improving current vaccination behaviors but also sustaining these behaviors. Researchers and practitioners from a variety of backgrounds have engaged in this work, which has included efforts directed at public health and government policies, health education and health promotion programs, and clinical and patient-provider approaches, as well as work aimed to respond to and combat anti-HPV vaccination movements in society. Using a previously developed conceptual model to organize and summarize each of these areas, this paper also highlights the need for future HPV vaccine promotion work to adopt a multi-level and, when possible, integrated approach in order to maximize impact on vaccination rates.
