The targeted samples for this research were the employees of a battered women’s shelter located in Indianapolis, Indiana. A questionnaire was constructed that included established scales in order to measure independent and dependent variables. The questionnaires were distributed among the employees and 47.82% agreed to participate in this study. Regression analyses were conducted to analyze the collected data. The findings indicated the importance of assurances and conflict management among staffs in mitigating their job stresses and increasing their personal accomplishment, communication satisfaction, organizational commitment and job satisfaction.Item An Appreciative Approach to Burnout(Elsevier, 2019-08) Gunderman, Richard B.; Radiology and Imaging Sciences, School of MedicineItem Assessing the Impact of COVID-19 on Social Work Students: Burnout and Resilience During a Global Pandemic(IU School of Social Work, 2023-03-22) Keesler, John M.; Wilkerson, David; White, Kurt; Dickinson, Stephanie; School of Social WorkCOVID-19 had a profound impact on teaching and learning at academic institutions across the globe. This study examined the experiences of social work students (n = 884) during the pandemic and their associated level of burnout. Using a mixed methods approach, data from an online survey within a school of social work at a large Midwestern university were examined using stepwise regression and thematic analysis. Student demographics, academic characteristics, and experiences with COVID-19 were examined as predictors of burnout. Resilience was tested as a moderator of the association between COVID-19 experiences and burnout. Regression models accounted for 34.3% to 45.5% of variance across three domains of burnout (i.e., exhaustion, cynicism, and professional/academic efficacy), with COVID-related experiences accounting for most of the variance. Although resilience had a significant main effect, the interactions of resilience and COVID-19 experiences were not significant. Quantitative results were illuminated by thematic analysis of the qualitative data from which emerged four major themes: online teaching pedagogy, impact of COVID-19, transition of teaching and learning, and affective domains of learning. Engaging in humanistic education is discussed as a possible approach to circumvent burnout, bolster student resilience, and encourage academic success.Item BREATHE: A Pilot Study of a One-Day Retreat to Reduce Burnout Among Mental Health Professionals(2011-02) Salyers, Michelle P.; Hudson, Candice; Morse, Gary; Rollins, Angela L.; Monroe-DeVita, Maria; Wilson, Cynthia; Freeland, LeahOBJECTIVE: Staff burnout is a frequent problem for mental health providers and may be associated with negative outcomes for providers, consumers, and organizations. This study tested an intervention to reduce staff burnout. METHODS: Community mental health providers were invited to participate in a day-long training session to learn methods to reduce burnout. A Web-based survey was given at time of registration, before the intervention, and again six weeks later. RESULTS: Eighty-four providers participated in the training, and follow-up data were available for 74. Six weeks after the day-long training, staff reported significant decreases in emotional exhaustion and depersonalization and significant increases in positive views toward consumers. There were no significant changes in providers' sense of personal accomplishment, job satisfaction, or intention to leave their position. Ninety-one percent of the staff reported the training to be helpful. CONCLUSIONS: This brief intervention is feasible, is acceptable to staff, and may improve burnout and staff attitudes.Item Burnout Education: The Relationship of Personal Life to Work Life(Elsevier, 2018-08) McLuckey, Morgan N.; Gunderman, Richard B.; Radiology and Imaging Sciences, School of MedicineItem Burnout in Individuals with Type D Personality: Relations to Age and Gender(2019) Kelly, Carla A.; Bigatti, Silvia M.; Social and Behavioral Sciences, School of Public HealthObjective: The purpose of this research was to examine the severity and prevalence of burnout in working adults with Type D personality (TDP) in comparison to those without TDP. TDP is defined by the presence of specific levels of both negative affectivity and social inhibition. Burnout is an extended response to chronic stressors characterized by three dimensions: exhaustion, cynicism, and inefficacy. Methods: Online surveys were used to gather responses from 333 participants to the Type D Scale-14, the standard for measure for assessing TDP, and the Burnout Measure, Short Version. Quantitative analyses included the use of t-tests, chi square tests, and regression analysis to determine: a) if there are differences in the severity and prevalence of burnout in individuals with and without TDP, and b) whether age, gender, or both moderate the relationship between burnout and TDP. Results: There were differences in the prevalence and severity of burnout between groups. Individuals with TDP were more likely to have, and to have more severe, burnout than those without TDP. Age moderated the relationship between burnout severity but not burnout prevalence and TDP. Severity of burnout worsened with age in individuals with TDP. Gender did not moderate the relationship. Conclusion: It is important to better understand TDP and its role in burnout. The results presented here highlight the importance of considering TDP in the development of interventions and preventative measures in settings where employee burnout is high.Item Burnout in Mental Health Services: A Review of the Problem and Its Remediation(2012-09) Morse, Gary; Salyers, Michelle P.; Rollins, Angela L.; Monroe-DeVita, Maria; Pfahler, CoreyStaff burnout is increasingly viewed as a concern in the mental health field. In this article we first examine the extent to which burnout is a problem for mental health services in terms of two critical issues: its prevalence and its association with a range of undesirable outcomes for staff, organizations, and consumers. We subsequently provide a comprehensive review of the limited research attempting to remediate burnout among mental health staff. We conclude with recommendations for the development and rigorous testing of intervention approaches to address this critical area.Item Characteristics and Job Stressors Associated With Turnover and Turnover Intention Among Community Mental Health Providers(APA, 2020-03) Fukui, Sadaaki; Rollins, Angela L.; Salyers, Michelle P.; School of Social WorkObjective: This study aimed to examine the provider characteristics and job stressors that are related to turnover intention and actual turnover among community mental health providers. Methods: Secondary analyses were conducted with data collected from 186 community mental health providers from two agencies. Self-reported provider characteristics, job stressors, and turnover intention data were collected with the baseline survey, and actual turnover data were obtained from the agencies 12 months later. Bivariate analyses were conducted to examine factors associated with each turnover variable. Results: Turnover intention and actual turnover were correlated, yet a distinct set of variables was associated with each outcome. Namely, job stressors were related to turnover intention, while provider characteristics were related to actual turnover. Conclusions: Given that both turnover intention and actual turnover have important implications for both providers and agencies, it is critical to consider differential factors associated with each.Item A Comparative Effectiveness Trial to Reduce Burnout and Improve Quality of Care(Springer, 2019-03) Salyers, Michelle P.; Garabrant, Jennifer M.; Luther, Lauren; Henry, Nancy; Fukui, Sadaaki; Shimp, Dawn; Wu, Wei; Gearhart, Tim; Morse, Gary; York, Mary M.; Rollins, Angela L.; Psychology, School of ScienceClinician burnout is presumed to negatively impact healthcare quality; yet scant research has rigorously addressed this hypothesis. Using a mixed-methods, randomized, comparative effectiveness design, we tested two competing approaches to improve care—one addressing clinician burnout and the other addressing how clinicians interact with consumers—with 192 clinicians and 469 consumers at two community mental health centers. Although qualitative reports were promising, we found no comparative effectiveness for either intervention on burnout, patient-centered processes, or other outcomes. Discussion includes identifying ways to strengthen approaches to clinician burnout.Item Compassion fatigue among nurses working with older adults(Elsevier, 2017-03) Kolthoff, Kay L.; Hickman, Susan E.; IU School of NursingNurses who care for older patients are exposed to significant suffering and loss that can lead to the development of compassion fatigue and burnout. An exploratory descriptive study was conducted to assess compassion fatigue, burnout, and compassion satisfaction in a group of 42 nurses who worked on a geriatric medicine unit using the Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL) compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue 5 scale. Nurses reported average levels of compassion fatigue, burnout, and compassion satisfaction. However, new nurses reported higher levels of compassion fatigue (p < .01) and burnout (p = .02) than experienced nurses. Findings suggest the need to purposely build a supportive environment that focuses on new nurses to reduce compassion fatigue and burnout while enhancing compassion satisfaction.
