Item Breaking Bad News: A Randomized Trial Assessing Resident Performance After Novel Video Instruction(Cureus, 2021-06-05) Shanks, Anthony L.; Brann, Maria; Bute, Jennifer J.; Borse, Vyvian; Tonismae, Tiffany; Scott, Nikki; Obstetrics and Gynecology, School of MedicineIntroduction; Delivering bad news to patients is an essential skill for physicians, which is often developed through patient encounters. Residents in our program participate in objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs) on an annual basis to evaluate their skills in these scenarios. Our objectives were to develop an educational video and determine if an educational video provided to residents prior to OSCEs would improve performance. Methods: Previous OSCEs were reviewed to identify best practices and to create a four-minute video highlighting the "do's and don'ts" of delivering bad news. Residents in two post-graduate year (PGY) classes were randomized to watch the video prior to or after a standardized patient encounter. Three masked reviewers assessed resident empathy, attention, and understanding on 10 five-point Likert scales and assigned a total score (scale: 0-50). Hedges' g was used to assess mean scores and effect size. Results: A total of 17 residents participated in the evaluation: nine in the pre-OSCE video group and eight in the control group. Residents randomized to the video prior to the patient encounter had a mean score of 37.01 (SD=3.6). Residents randomized to the control group had a mean score of 35.38 (SD=4.85). Hedges' g was 0.37 (95% CI: -0.59 to 1.33). Conclusion: Residents randomized to the video group had a small increase in OSCE performance, which was not statistically significant. The novel video was helpful and addresses the need for a quick pre-assessment educational tool, though interns and graduating medical students may be a more appropriate target audience for instruction.Item Feminine, Like(2019) Pierce, Tiffany; Petranek, StefanTo help better understand the world around us, we develop shared assumptions about our experiences. These assumptions, or social constructs, are useful because they create order through the use of categorization. Categorization helps us quickly define, organize, and comprehend experiences. The effect of social constructs and their byproducts of categorization should be considered, as they often influence significant facets of our lives. Specifically, our idea and understanding of gender constructs is a fundamental concern because gender impacts many of these important facets. My multimedia thesis work examines the social construction of gender, and the coinciding expectations that are created. The work aims to question the validity of the stereotypes associated with gender in order to explore their limitations. The work utilizes self-portraiture and symbols, often pulled from popular culture, as well as performance to exemplify and exaggerate gender ideals. My recreations of social constructs examine how assumptions can limit our perceptions or potentially restrict our behavior.Item Installation as a Sensory Vessel(2017) Sciore-Jones, Elizabeth J.; Winship, AndrewThe tectonic plates of earth are in constant movement, floating on magma. The earth cracks and presses, creating mountain ranges and valleys. Water rushes in filling the crevasses, changing jagged bedrock into smooth curves, turning the seabed into a dry salt covered desert. The shift of the earth can be felt and the object-hood of a mountain range cannot be denied. Our origins are buried deep in the earth, creating a relationship between the self and the flesh of existence. The sensing matter of humanity is apodictic; confirmation is received from the nervous system as it interacts with primal environments, symbols, textures, and sounds. This information is processed phenomenologically, shaping how we think, communicate, and develop. As our contemporary minds grow further away from our intuition, we must look to the roots of our origin stories and how they merge withour modern sense of the sublime. I connect our contemporary phenomenological awareness to the primal origins of Earth, and humanity by utilizing video mapping, sound, sculptural paper-making and installation. Through this connection, I create sensory experiences to increase the viewer's awareness to their physical body and its causation.Item Park of Infinite Connections(2019) Casella, Emily; Farrow, Vance; Jefferson, Corey; Kinsman, PatrickMy Park of Infinite Connections displays five ceramic figures that are obsessed with the prospect of doing something for or at a later time. In the 21st century, society has become obsessed with digital recording. With so many humans interacting online, in fictional worlds, stories and digital media, our perception of three-dimensional space becomes overshadowed by our need to faithfully record and experience the two-dimensional equivalent. Utilizing video, ceramics, already manufactured items, and sound, I create sculptures that ask the viewers to discover the irreal lives of my ceramic people.Item Provisioning end-to-end quality of service for real-time interactive video over software-defined networking(2016-11-09) Owens II, Harold; Durresi, ArjanThis thesis contains four interrelated research areas. Before presenting the four research areas, this thesis presents literature review on Software-Defined Networking (SDN), a network architecture that allows network operator to manage the network using high level abstractions. This thesis presents taxonomy for classifying SDN research. In research first area, this thesis presents Video over Software-Defined Networking (VSDN), a network architecture that selects feasible paths using the network-wide view. This thesis describes the VSDN protocol which is used for requesting service from the network. This thesis presents the results of implementing VSDN prototype and evaluates behavior of VSDN. Requesting service from the network requires developer to provide three input parameters to application programmable interface. The message complexity of VSDN is linear. In research second area, this thesis presents Explicit Routing in Software-Defined Networking (ERSDN), a routing scheme that selects transit routers at the edge of network. This thesis presents the design and implementation of ERSDN. This thesis evaluates the effect of ERSDN on the scalability of controller by measuring the control plane network events-packets. ERSDN reduces the network events in the control plane by 430%. In research third area, this thesis presents Reliable Video over Software-Defined Networking (RVSDN) which builds upon previous work of Video over Software-Defined Networking (VSDN) to address the issue of finding most reliable path. This thesis presents the design and implementation of RVSDN. This thesis presents the experience of integrating RVSDN into ns-3, a network simulator which research community uses to simulate and model computer networks. This thesis presents RVSDN results and analyzes the results. RVSDN services 31 times more requests than VSDN and Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) explicit routing when the reliability constraint is 0.995 or greater. In research fourth area, this thesis presents Multi-Domain Video over Software-Defined Networking (MDVSDN), a network architecture that selects end-to-end network path or path for real-time interactive video applications across independent network domains. This thesis describes the architectural elements of MDVSDN. This thesis presents the results of implementing a prototype of MDVSDN and evaluates the behavior of MDVSDN. The message complexity of MDVSDN is linear. The contribution of this thesis lays the foundation for developing a network architecture that improves the performance of real-time interactive video applications by selecting feasible end-to-end multi-domain path among multiple paths using bandwidth, delay, jitter, and reliability.Item Supplementing provider counseling with an educational video prior to scheduled induction of labor(Springer Nature, 2024-10-18) Pape, Kelsey J.; Froehlich, Sierra A.; Haas, David M.; Obstetrics and Gynecology, School of MedicineBackground: Induction of labor (IOL) is common with one in four labors being induced in the United States (US). IOL has been associated with lower birth satisfaction. Video education can address gaps in education and promote anticipatory guidance. Prior studies in obstetrics have focused on randomized designs in English-speaking patients, leaving opportunities to explore how these tools perform in a pragmatic fashion with diverse patient populations. Our objective was to evaluate the effects of a video education tool on patient satisfaction and knowledge of IOL experience in English and Spanish-speaking patients scheduled for IOL at a tertiary care hospital. Methods: This was a single site pragmatic implementation of a quality improvement measure at an academic hospital. A bilingual survey was developed to evaluate the impact of an educational video on birth satisfaction and knowledge of IOL procedures. The video is freely available in English and Spanish. Baseline postpartum surveys were collected from June to July 2021. The video was subsequently recommended by providers when scheduling IOLs. Post-intervention surveys were collected from September to November 2021 after an implementation period. Groups were compared using t-tests for satisfaction scores and chi-square analyses for categorical variables. Results: Thirty-two participants completed the baseline survey and 72 completed the post-implementation survey with response rates of 88.9% and 91.1%, respectively. There were no statistically significant changes between mean total satisfaction scores (26.9 vs 28.0 out of 40.0, p = 0.290). 61 participants were English speaking (58%) and 43 Spanish (42%). Thirty (42%) patients reported watching the video. Correct identification of amniotomy use improved in the post-intervention group (p = 0.002). No changes were seen in anticipated duration of labor nor in whether patients would choose to be induced again. Conclusions: Recommendation of video education before scheduled IOL was associated with little improvement in knowledge about IOL, but no significant improvement in patient satisfaction. While video education has improved these measures in randomized trials, our study demonstrated that real-world implementation and patient uptake may be initially difficult. This study may help providers emphasize direct education and counseling and promote optimal implementation of innovative educational media.Item Temporal profile summarization and indexing for surveillance videos(2014-12) Bagheri, Saeid; Zheng, Jiangyu; Fang, Shiaofen; Tuceryan, MihranSurveillance videos are recorded continually and the retrieval of such videos currently still relies on human operators. Automatic retrieval has not reached a satisfactory accuracy. As an intermediate representation, this work develops multiple original temporal profiles of video to convey accurate temporal information in the video while keeping certain spatial characteristics. These are effective methods to visualizes surveillance video contents efficiently in a 2D temporal image, suitable for indexing and retrieving a large video database. We are aiming to provide a compact index that is intuitive and preserves most of the information in the video in order to avoid browsing extensive video clips frame by frame. By considering some of the properties of static surveillance videos, we aim at accentuating the temporal dimension in our visualization. We have introduced our framework as three unique methods that visualize different aspects of a surveillance video, plus an extension to non-static surveillance videos. In our first method "Localized Temporal Profile", by knowing that most surveillance videos are monitoring specific locations, we try to emphasize the other dimension, time, in our solution. we focus on describing all the events only in critical locations of the video. In our next method "Multi-Position Temporal Profile", we generate an all-inclusive profile that covers all the events in the video field of view. In our last method "Motion Temporal Profile" we perform in-depth analysis of scene motion and try to handle targets with non-uniform, non-translational motion in our temporal profile. We then further extend our framework by loosening the constraint that the video is static and including cameras with smooth panning motion as such videos are widely used in practice. By performing motion analysis on the camera, we stabilize the camera to create a panorama-like effect for the video, allowing us to utilize all of the aforementioned methods. The resulting profiles allows temporal indexing to each video frame, and contains all spatial information in a continuous manner. It also shows the actions and progress of events in the temporal profile. Flexible browsing and effective manipulation of videos can be achieved using the resulting video profiles.Item V.
