Item Evaluating Instructors Sitting At The TABLE (Technology Access For Better Learning And Employment)(Midwest Research-to-Practice Conference in Adult, Continuing, and Community Education, 2003) Moore, Maria Hruby; Bingham-Catri, Deborah; McMasters, RosemaryThis paper focuses on the Technology Access for Better Learning and Employment Checklist developed by the authors. This evaluation tool was created and then used to measure eight instructors’ability to use technology in their teaching in four adult programs sponsored in part by the Ohio Cooperative Extension Service and a partner, Godman Guild, a settlement house located in a Columbus, Ohio neighborhood identified as located in an empowerment zone. Funding through the Federal Department of Education for a Community Technology Center was granted for this project which required an instructor pre and post evaluation component to be conducted by the Center on Education and Training for Employment. The data collected using this instrument was then used to design customized professional development plans and interventions to address technology usage as well as general instructional competencies for effective adult teaching for learning. The contribution of this paper is the TABLE Checklist and professional development system designed for this project.Item An Evaluation Of The Use Of Learning Objects As An Instructional Aid In Teaching Adults(Midwest Research-to-Practice Conference in Adult, Continuing, and Community Education, 2003) Conceição, Simone; Lehman, RosemaryThe purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of learning objects in the CD-ROM format for the teaching of introductory American Sign Language to adult learners. A controlled experiment was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the use of the learning objects to enhance student learning. Findings suggest that there was no indication that the use of learning objects on a CD-ROM affected students’ scores at any level of assessment. Reasons for the learning objects not affecting student outcomes were found in the qualitative comments that the students made in the survey. The reasons included: learners’ inexperience in using the technology and the difference between signs being taught in the classroom and on the CD-ROM. Recommendations for the future application of learning objects as instructional aids are presented.Item INVESTIGATING THE EXPERIENCES OF ONLINE LEARNING: AN EVALUATION(2005-11-21T18:24:24Z) Cooper, Mary K; Bielema, CherylWith the push to on-line courses by many universities, online degrees are becoming more prevalent. The University of Missouri is no exception. In 2002 an online course development committee was formed to address online learning within the college of education. In summer of 2001, three courses in the adult education master’s program were offered in a web-based environment, with a substantial evaluation built onto the process. The preliminary findings are presented here.Item Technology Training For In-Service Teachers – An Evaluation(Midwest Research to Practice Conference in Adult, Continuing, and Community Education, 2004) Banerjee, RimjhimA process to determine impact is needed for all training programs. The Tech Mentors Program, a three-year initiative of the PT3 project at Florida International University, focuses on the professional development of cooperating teachers in the Miami-Dade County School District as a key strategy for improving teacher education. In the first year of this program, 100 participating teachers received a full week of technology training and agreed to accept a FIU intern in his/her classroom in fall 2002 or spring 2003, use what he/she learns to support technology integration into the student intern’s field experiences, and mentor the intern and help to evaluate his/her use of instructional technology. Since data has not been gathered regarding the impact of technology training on classroom mentoring practice and student intern achievement, the purpose of this evaluation study is to determine whether the program actually helps cooperating teachers to acquire the required knowledge, skills and dispositions to mentor teacher education students. Kirkpatrick’s model of evaluation is used as a framework to build the evaluation questions. Based on the results in each level of the evaluation, the program has been successful in providing the Miami-Dade public school teachers with the much needed technology integration training.Item Working With Interdisciplinary Teams Of Boundary Spanners: The Challenges And Potential For Adult Education(Midwest Research-to-Practice Conference in Adult, Continuing, and Community Education, 2003) Wise, Meg; Glowacki-Dudka, MichelleInnovative research and development for holistic adult on-line health education (eHealth) is increasingly conducted by interdisciplinary teams of boundary spanners in grant-funded academic institutes. Typically, these teams include fields that represent the whole person with an illness in their social and technological context: medicine, nursing, social and counseling psychology, social work, systems engineering, and the communications and information sciences. However, adult education does not typically sit at these collaborative research tables. This paper uses a case example of a sole adult educator working in such a setting to explore how adult education fits into this new boundary-spanning field of practice and scholarship.
