In my thesis I examine the shared worldviews of individuals who obtain tattoos by conducting an analysis of six internet communities that promote this sub-culture in order to understand how cultural influences provide the impetus to create self-identity through inscribing the body. I will argue that individuals who commit to a permanent tattoo may be motivated by the need to create self identity.Item The effect of shared dynamic understanding on willingness to contribute information: design and analysis of a mega-collaborative interface(2016-05-06) Newlon, Christine Mae; Bolchini, Davide P.; Faiola, Anthony; McDaniel, Anna M.; MacDorman, Karl F.Collaborative helping via social networking conversation threads can pose serious challenges in emergency situations. Interfaces that support complex group interaction and sense-making can help. This research applies human-computer interaction (HCI), computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW), and collaboration engineering in developing an interactive design, the Mega-Collaboration Tool (MCT). The goal is to reduce the cognitive load of a group’s growing mental model, thus increasing the general public’s ability to organize spontaneous collaborative helping. The specific aims of this research include understanding the dynamics of mental model negotiation and determining whether MCT can assist the group’s sense-making ability without increasing net cognitive load. The proposed HCI theory is that interfaces supporting collaborative cognition motivate contribution and reduce information bias, thus increasing the information shared. These research questions are addressed: 1. Does MCT support better collaborative cognition? 2. Does increasing the size of the shared data repository increase the amount of information shared? 3. Does this happen because group members experience 1) a greater sense of strategic commitment to the knowledge structure, 2) increased intrinsic motivation to contribute, and 3) reduced resistance to sharing information? These questions were affirmed to varying degrees, giving insight into the collaborative process. Greater content did not motive group members directly; instead, half of their motivation came from awareness of their contribution’s relevance. Greater content and organization improved this awareness, and also encouraged sharing through increased enthusiasm and reduced bias. Increased commitment was a result of this process, rather than a cause. Also, MCT increased collaborative cognition but was significantly hampered by Internet performance. This challenge indicates MCT’s system components should be redesigned to allow asynchronous interaction. These results should contribute to the development of MCT, other collaboration engineering applications, and HCI and information science theory.Item How Was Passion Stirred Through Interactivity in Obama's Blog?(2009-03-18T18:47:54Z) Liu, Yifei; Sheeler, Kristina; Vargus, Brian; Parrish-Sprowl, JohnThe impact of new technology on the current presidential campaign has prevailed. A small but fundamental change quietly took place in the candidate’s website—Barack Obama’s official campaign blog. The campaign is now operating two sub-blogs at the same time, the Obamablog (also known as the Obama HQ blog) and the Community Blog. The former becomes a must-have tool in a political campaigner’s strategy, whereas the latter, which allows visitors to actually write, publish, and manage posts, is novel. This new function seems an audacious step up from the rest of the blogs of this kind since the 2004 presidential election because it gives citizen users freedom to express their own ideas that could put the campaign on an impromptu situation to respond.Item Privacy Preserving in Online Social Network Data Sharing and Publication(2019-12) Gao, Tianchong; Lin, Xiaojun; Chien, Stanley; Li, Feng; Hu, Jianghai; Delp, EdwardFollowing the trend of online data sharing and publishing, researchers raise their concerns about the privacy problem. Online Social Networks (OSNs), for example, often contain sensitive information about individuals. Therefore, anonymizing network data before releasing it becomes an important issue. This dissertation studies the privacy preservation problem from the perspectives of both attackers and defenders. To defenders, preserving the private information while keeping the utility of the published OSN is essential in data anonymization. At one extreme, the final data equals the original one, which contains all the useful information but has no privacy protection. At the other extreme, the final data is random, which has the best privacy protection but is useless to the third parties. Hence, the defenders aim to explore multiple potential methods to strike a desirable tradeoff between privacy and utility in the published data. This dissertation draws on the very fundamental problem, the definition of utility and privacy. It draws on the design of the privacy criterion, the graph abstraction model, the utility method, and the anonymization method to further address the balance between utility and privacy. To attackers, extracting meaningful information from the collected data is essential in data de-anonymization. De-anonymization mechanisms utilize the similarities between attackers’ prior knowledge and published data to catch the targets. This dissertation focuses on the problems that the published data is periodic, anonymized, and does not cover the target persons. There are two thrusts in studying the de-anonymization attacks: the design of seed mapping method and the innovation of generating-based attack method. To conclude, this dissertation studies the online data privacy problem from both defenders’ and attackers’ point of view and introduces privacy and utility enhancement mechanisms in different novel angles.Item Social comparison, social networking sites, and the workplace(2015) Tomasik, Rachel E.; Ashburn-Nardo, Leslie; Williams, Jane R.; Boyd, ElizabethAlthough social comparison has been studied for over 60 years, little research has been done to determine the effects it has on the workplace. Moreover, the explosion of social networking sites and their potential impact on the workplace have been largely overlooked by organizational researchers. Therefore, this study will attempt to evaluate the effect social comparison, specifically through social media, has on work relevant outcomes such as one’s job satisfaction, life satisfaction, and entitlement, moderated by materialism (relevance) and job expectations (attainability) of the referent other. Participants selected from an alumni database of a large Midwestern University were asked to view a manipulated Facebook newsfeed page and then complete a brief survey (N=290). A hierarchical multiple regression was conducted to assess the hypotheses. Results, implications, and limitations are also discussed.Item Social Production: How Our World is Changing(2009-12-10T20:42:32Z) Lewis, David W.Presentation slides of a talk given to the New York Library Association in Niagara Falls, NY on October 15, 2009. Based on the work of Clay Shirky and Yochia Benkler, the concept of social production is reviewed. Because of the development of new technology tools sharing, creating, and acting in concert has become much easier and the result is new ways of doing things that are less dependent of organizations. The implications of these developments for libraries are explored.
