Item Designing Design Thinking Curriculum: A framework for shaping a participatory, human-centered design course(Cumulus Association, 2015) Napier, Pamela; Wada, TerriWithin design education and practice today, new ways are continuously being developed to utilize Design Thinking in response to social, environmental, economic, and cultural factors. In the Visual Communication Design program at Indiana University, Herron School of Art and Design, Design Thinking is an integral component to both curriculum development and course content. In considering the inherent complexity of human-centered design—which focuses on diverse stakeholder collaboration and participation within the design process—simply understanding a design process and methods for collecting data is not enough. Students must go through a process of building a value system for conducting participatory design research. They must also understand the nature of the changing role of designers, from more traditional "making" roles, to design facilitators who must possess a particular mindset, model certain characteristics, employ distinct skill sets and use a specific approach. This presentation and paper will focus on an in-depth case study that describes the authors' methodology for integrating Design Thinking into the course curriculum of an undergraduate senior-level studio course, titled "Design for Innovation: Introduction to Design Methods," where students work in a variety of real contexts with diverse stakeholders throughout the design process.Item In Vitro, In Vivo, and In Silico Methods for Assessment of Muscle Size and Muscle Growth Regulation(Wolters Kluwer, 2020-04-14) Rupert, Joseph E.; Jengelley, Daenique H. A.; Zimmers, Teresa A.; Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, School of MedicineTrauma, burn injury, sepsis, and ischemia lead to acute and chronic loss of skeletal muscle mass and function. Healthy muscle is essential for eating, posture, respiration, reproduction, and mobility, as well as for appropriate function of the senses including taste, vision, and hearing. Beyond providing support and contraction, skeletal muscle also exerts essential roles in temperature regulation, metabolism, and overall health. As the primary reservoir for amino acids, skeletal muscle regulates whole-body protein and glucose metabolism by providing substrate for protein synthesis and supporting hepatic gluconeogenesis during illness and starvation. Overall, greater muscle mass is linked to greater insulin sensitivity and glucose disposal, strength, power, and longevity. In contrast, low muscle mass correlates with dysmetabolism, dysmobility, and poor survival. Muscle mass is highly plastic, appropriate to its role as reservoir, and subject to striking genetic control. Defining mechanisms of muscle growth regulation holds significant promise to find interventions that promote health and diminish morbidity and mortality after trauma, sepsis, inflammation, and other systemic insults. In this invited review, we summarize techniques and methods to assess and manipulate muscle size and muscle mass in experimental systems, including cell culture and rodent models. However, approaches to estimate baseline creatinine (bSCr) are not standardized in this unique patient population. Prior to wide-spread utilization, bSCr estimation methods need to be evaluated in many populations, particularly in children from low-income countries. Methods We evaluated six methods to estimate bSCr in Ugandan children aged 6 months to 12 years of age in two cohorts of children with severe malaria (n = 1078) and healthy community children (n = 289). Using isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS)-traceable creatinine measures from community children, we evaluated the bias, accuracy and precision of estimating bSCr using height-dependent and height-independent estimated glomerular filtration (eGFR) equations to back-calculate bSCr or estimating bSCr directly using published or population-specific norms. Results We compared methods to estimate bSCr in healthy community children against the IDMS-traceable SCr measure. The Pottel-age based equation, assuming a normal GFR of 120 mL/min per 1.73m2, was the more accurate method with minimal bias when compared to the Schwartz height-based equation. Using the different bSCr estimates, we demonstrated the prevalence of KDIGO-defined AKI in children with severe malaria ranged from 15.6–43.4%. The lowest estimate was derived using population upper levels of normal and the highest estimate was derived using the mean GFR of the community children (137 mL/min per 1.73m2) to back-calculate the bSCr. Irrespective of approach, AKI was strongly associated with mortality with a step-wise increase in mortality across AKI stages (p < 0.0001 for all). AKI defined using the Pottel-age based equation to estimate bSCr showed the strongest relationship with mortality with a risk ratio of 5.13 (95% CI 3.03–8.68) adjusting for child age and sex. Conclusions We recommend using height-independent age-based approaches to estimate bSCr in hospitalized children in sub-Saharan Africa due to challenges in accurate height measurements and undernutrition which may impact bSCr estimates. In this population the Pottel-age based GFR estimating equation obtained comparable bSCr estimates to population-based estimates in healthy children.Item Trends in Language Teaching Methods.(Publisher of original article: SUKOL Finnish Language Teachers Association., 1983) Connor, Ulla, 1948-The basis for this discussion comes from my foreign language learning experiences in Finnland and ESL (English as a second language) teaching experiences at various levels in the United States in schools and at universities teaching English to adults of many different language backgrounds. Additionally, I will incorporate information from my teacher training experience at George Town University, where we have more than 200 graduate students studying for the MA and Ph.D. degrees in Linguistics and ESL. Of our students 60% come from abroad, mainly from the Middle East and South America.Item Usability-In-Place—Remote Usability Testing Methods for Homebound Older Adults: Rapid Literature Review(JMIR, 2021-11-02) Hill, Jordan R.; Brown, Janetta C.; Campbell, Noll L.; Holden, Richard J.; Medicine, School of MedicineBackground: Technology can benefit older adults in many ways, including by facilitating remote access to services, communication, and socialization for convenience or out of necessity when individuals are homebound. As people, especially older adults, self-quarantined and sheltered in place during the COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of usability-in-place became clear. To understand the remote use of technology in an ecologically valid manner, researchers and others must be able to test usability remotely. Objective: Our objective was to review practical approaches for and findings about remote usability testing, particularly remote usability testing with older adults. Methods: We performed a rapid review of the literature and reported on available methods, their advantages and disadvantages, and practical recommendations. This review also reported recommendations for usability testing with older adults from the literature. Results: Critically, we identified a gap in the literature-a lack of remote usability testing methods, tools, and strategies for older adults, despite this population's increased remote technology use and needs (eg, due to disability or technology experience). We summarized existing remote usability methods that were found in the literature as well as guidelines that are available for conducting in-person usability testing with older adults. Conclusions: We call on the human factors research and practice community to address this gap to better support older adults and other homebound or mobility-restricted individuals.Item The use of qualitative methods in venous thromboembolism research(Elsevier, 2021-09-12) Hernandez-Nino, Jackeline; Thomas, Mary; Alexander, Andreia B.; Ott, Mary A.; Kline, Jeffrey A.; Emergency Medicine, School of MedicineIntroduction: Qualitative research has been increasingly used in health care research to allow in-depth insights and understanding of patients' lived experiences for poorly understood phenomena. The psychological stress mechanisms underlying fear, dyspnea, and pain after venous thromboembolism (VTE) remain poorly understood. However, novice VTE researchers may not be familiar with the process of undertaking qualitative research. Objective: The aim of this article is to describe the planning, methodology and execution of qualitative methods, using the example of patients' lived experiences during and after the diagnosis of VTE. We discuss challenges and solutions in implementing qualitative research methods in health care research. Methods: Patients were recruited from the emergency department and clinic using in-person and phone contact. We used both in-person and video format to interview 24 patients. Interviews were guided by a set of questions to be explored but conducted to elucidate unique thoughts and opinions from patients. Results: For recruitment, "cold-calling" was found to be largely unsuccessful. Many patients have preexisting diagnoses of anxiety and depression. Video interviews were found to be at least as effective as in-person interviews. Interviews revealed unique post-VTE experiences from all participants, with a wide range of impact on quality of life. Themes that were most common included perceptions of physician communication, fear of recurrence, and concerns of death. Conclusion: A qualitative research approach can reveal individual experiences and psychosocial impact in patients diagnosed with VTE, which allow the researchers to better comprehend the complexity of this phenomenon and its impact in health care.
