    Capturing the benefits of open access in ILL

    Despite assumptions that open access would be the death of interlibrary loan, library users regularly request open access materials. There is now a large body of open access materials that library users need assistance in navigating. As always, ILL practitioners have a role to play in connecting their users to information, even open access information. This presentation will give you the building blocks for capturing the benefits of open access in ILL. Topics discussed will include an overview of open access, how open access can help ILL, mitigating risk, and creating open access workflows.

    Having Fun with ILLiad: Tricks to Customize & Simplify Your Workflows

    Do you love creating new queues and routing rules in ILLiad for unique workflows? If so, come to this presentation. Tina and Heather will share some ILLiad customization tricks they have used to simplify workflows. Topics and workflows covered will include open access searching, purchase on demand, creating queues for non-ILL staff, requests for locally-owned materials, and dealing with non-OCLC requests.     ILL best practices: streamlining & greening

    Open access in interlibrary loan: sources and strategies for locating free materials online

    Even though open access materials are free for all, library users continue to request them through interlibrary loan. ILL staff are able to provide a service to users and a cost savings for their libraries by utilizing these materials. In this presentation, I will demonstrate open access resources that all libraries can use to fill interlibrary loan requests. I will also briefly discuss possible workflows for handling requests for open access materials.

    Open access to the world: locating international publications to fill ILL requests

    Google, WorldCat, and other online discovery tools have increased the likelihood that users will identify non-U.S. resources, but multiple catalog records and myriad open access repositories make it less likely that users will be able to locate them. ILL practitioners play a vital role by bridging the gap between identification and location yet many find the process of locating potential lenders of non-U.S. resources difficult. This presentation will describe online finding aids and open access repositories that can assist ILL practitioners in this process. Identifying appropriate lenders and utilizing open access resources speeds the process for end users and fosters goodwill among our international partners. The resources described in this presentation can help ILL practitioners overcome the simplest of barriers to international ILL, citation verification.

    Open Access: A Help or a Hindrance to Resource Sharing?

    The growing acceptance of the open access movement has created an increasingly large body of free, online information that library users may have difficulty navigating. Students, in particular, may not be fully aware of open access and the corpus of knowledge available to them. As a result, users still request open access materials through interlibrary loan despite their ability to access these materials directly. In 2011, the author conducted a study of borrowing requests for open access materials over a two year period (July 2009-June 2011). This period showed an increase in open access requests while overall borrowing requests held relatively steady. This paper presents an update on that research, which provides evidence that the number of borrowing requests for open access documents continued to grow in the ensuing two years. The author will discuss the data regarding IUPUI University Library open access borrowing requests and share a selection of online resources for locating open access materials.

    Opening Interlibrary Loan to Open Access: Locating and Managing Borrowing Requests for Open Access Materials

    Even though open access materials are freely available on the internet, library users still request them through interlibrary loan. In 2009, IUPUI University Library began tracking borrowing requests for open access materials. As the number of requests filled with open access documents continues to grow, IUPUI University Library is able to provide a service to users and cost savings for the library by utilizing this material. In this presentation, I will discuss the data regarding IUPUI University Library open access borrowing requests and demonstrate some of the most commonly used online resources for locating open access materials. I will also discuss how IUPUI University Library tracks requests for open access materials and notifies library users of availability.
