Item Adolescent relationship violence and acculturation among NYC Latinos(Springer-Verlag, 2015-07) DuPont-Reyes, Melissa; Fry, Deborah; Rickert, Vaughn; Davidson, Leslie L.; Department of Pediatrics, IU School of MedicineAcculturation has been shown to positively and negatively affect Latino health. Little research investigates the overlap between acculturation and the different types of relationship violence among Latino youth and most research in this area predominantly involves Mexican-American samples. The current study examined associations between indices of acculturation (language use at home, chosen survey language, and nativity) and relationship physical violence and sexual coercion, both received and delivered, among predominantly Dominican and Puerto Rican adolescents from New York City. From 2006 to 2007, 1,454 adolescents aged 13-21 years in New York City completed an anonymous survey that included the Conflict in Adolescent Relationships Inventory which estimates experiences of physical violence and sexual coercion, both received and delivered, in the previous year. This analysis includes bivariate and multivariate methods to test the associations between language use at home, chosen survey language, and nativity with the different types of relationship violence. Among females, there is a significant association between language use at home and overall level of acculturation with delivering and receiving relationship physical violence; however, we did not find this association in delivering and receiving relationship sexual coercion. We found no association between acculturation and any type of relationship violence among males. Among Latina females, language spoken at home is an indicator of other protective factors of physical relationship violence. Future research in this area should explore the potential protective factors surrounding relationship violence among Latina females of various subgroups using comprehensive measures of acculturation, household composition and family engagement.Item Barriers to and Facilitators of Mental Health Treatment Engagement among Latina Adolescents(SpringerLink, 2020-05) McCord Stafford, Allison; Burke Draucker, Claire; School of NursingLatina adolescents are more likely to experience depressive symptoms and less likely to receive mental health treatment than White peers. The purpose of this study is to describe barriers to and facilitators of engagement in depression treatment among Latina adolescents. Twenty-five Latina young women (mean age=16.7 years) with a history of depressive symptoms during adolescence participated in this qualitative descriptive study. Participants were recruited from clinical and community settings and were interviewed about their experiences with depression treatment. Using qualitative content analysis, we identified barriers to and facilitators of engagement in treatment for depression. Barriers included beliefs about depression and its treatments, negative experiences with treatment, and logistical problems. Facilitators included positive treatment outcomes, meaningful connection with a therapist, and family support of depression treatment. Mental health providers should minimize barriers and maximize facilitators to promote mental health treatment use and engagement among Latina adolescents with depressive symptoms.Item Cambios dialectales e idiosincrasias en la enseñanza del segundo idioma a estudiantes minoritarios a través de la poesía Afrocubana(2013-01-09) Fleming, Alicia Ann-Marie; Tezanos-Pinto, Rosa; Torijano, J. Saben que si los estudiantes pudieran acoplarse con el contenido de la lección, entenderían y aprenderían con gran eficacia. En la mayoría de los distritos escolares urbanos de Indianapolis, Estados Unidos hay muchos estudiantes afroamericanos que están en clases de lengua extranjera que piensan que no existen atributos de conexión --como tradiciones y costumbres-- que tienen aspectos en común con sus propias culturas. Por otro lado, hay estudiantes afrolatinos que son nativos de esas lenguas pero a quienes no se les expone a elementos que pertenecen a su cultura o herencia. Esta investigación se enfocará en cómo los profesores pueden utilizar la poesía para enseñar una lengua extranjera; específicamente, cómo se puede utilizar la poesía afrocubana para vincular la lección a los estudiantes minoritarios y su cultura.Item “Cuando actuamos, actuamos juntos”: Understanding the intersections of religion, activism, and citizenship within the Latino community in Indianapolis(2014-04-11) Logan, Ryan I.Undocumented immigration from Latin America is a heated and divisive topic in United States' politics. Politicians in Washington, D.C. are debating new legislation which would provide a pathway to citizenship for some 11 million undocumented immigrants. The Indianapolis Congregation Action Network (IndyCAN), a grassroots activist group in Indianapolis, is organizing the Latino community through faith and shared political goals. Many undocumented Latino immigrants are utilizing IndyCAN to mobilize and attempt to influence progressive policy change. However, nativist groups challenge these efforts by trying to define who can be considered an "American" and are attempting to block legislation due to their negative perceptions of Latinos. Debates about citizenship reveal the embeddedness of race and ethnicity in defining “American.” Despite this, many Latino immigrants are forging their own identities in the United States and are engaging in a political system which refuses to grant them a legal status. Within IndyCAN, this political involvement occurs through religious strategies that seem apolitical yet are implicitly an enactment of activism. Experiences with cultural stressors varied across generational status. Healthcare providers’ ethnic bias may be one reason for pain disparities. This investigation sought to determine the influence of Hispanic ethnicity and ethnic bias on chronic pain management decisions. During an online experiment, 97 medical students made pain assessment and opioid treatment decisions for Hispanic and NHW virtual human patients with chronic pain. They also completed explicit and implicit measures of ethnic bias. Individual-level analyses found that 31% and 36% of participants demonstrated large effect sizes (dz>.50), indicating that patient ethnicity strongly influenced their pain assessment and opioid treatment decisions, respectively. At the group level of analysis, participants’ decisions did not differ significantly between NHW and Hispanic patients (all p values >.05). Participants did not report significant explicit ethnic bias (t[96]=1.88, p=.06; dz=.19; Hispanic mean rating=77.6[SD=18.7]; NHW mean rating=75.2[SD=19.4]) but demonstrated a small-to-moderate implicit preference for NHWs relative to Hispanics (Mean=.31[SD=.41]). Patient ethnicity and implicit ethnic bias had an interactive effect on opioid treatment decisions (F[1, 95]=5.15, p<.05, generalized eta squared =.02); however, the direction of the effect was not as hypothesized. Participants with higher implicit ethnic bias gave significantly higher opioid ratings to Hispanics relative to NHWs (p=.05), whereas participants with lower bias gave marginally higher opioid ratings to NHWs relative to Hispanics (p=.20). Participants with higher vs. lower implicit ethnic bias differed only in their treatment ratings for NHW patients, such that participants with lower bias gave significantly higher opioid ratings to NHW patients than did participants with higher bias (p<.05). This investigation found that approximately one-third of participants made significantly different chronic pain management decisions for Hispanic vs. NHW patients. Participants’ implicit ethnic bias interacted with their opioid treatment decisions but not as expected. Future investigations should measure healthcare providers’ stereotypes about Hispanic patients with pain as this may better predict their pain decisions.Item Getting a Grip on My Depression: How Latina Adolescents Experience, Self-Manage, and Seek Treatment for Depressive Symptoms(Sage, 2019-10) McCord Stafford, Allison; Aalsma, Matthew; Bigatti, Silvia; Oruche, Ukamaka M.; Burke Draucker, Claire; Pediatrics, School of MedicineLatina (female) adolescents are more likely to experience depressive symptoms and less likely to receive mental health services than their non-Latina White peers. We aimed to develop a framework that explains how Latina adolescents experience, self-manage, and seek treatment for depressive symptoms. Latina young women (n = 25, M age = 16.8 years) who experienced depressive symptoms during adolescence were recruited from clinical and community settings and interviewed about experiences with depressive symptoms. The framework was developed using constructivist grounded theory methods. Participants experienced a psychosocial problem that we labeled being overburdened and becoming depressed. They responded to this problem through a five-phase psychosocial process that we labeled Getting a Grip on My Depression. Family members, peer groups, and mainstream authorities were influential in how participants experienced these phases. Future research should further develop this framework in diverse samples of Latino/a youth. Clinicians can use this framework in discussions with Latina adolescents about depressive symptoms.Item Illness Representations of Breast Cancer among Hispanics(2011-03-09) Hernandez, Ann Marie; Bigatti, Silvia M.; Johnson, Kathy E.; Bond, Gary R.; Wagner, ChristinaHispanics are more likely to die from breast cancer compared to non - Hispanic whites matched on stage and age at diagnosis. Higher mortality rates among Hispanics are attributed to cancer - related disparities across the cancer continuum including later - stage detection. While research has shown that socioeconomic factors play a significant role in the development and maintenance of cancer - related disparities, differences persist when these factors are controlled. Thus far, research on cultural factors and cognitions surrounding cancer is limited. The current study investigated illness representations of cancer and their determinants among Hispanic men and women (N = 120) using a cross - sectional survey approach. The study sample was comprised of predominantly first generation, employed Hispanic women in their early - thirties from Mexico. Most had not resided in the U.S. for more than 5 - 9 years. Half of the sample reported an annual income of $20,001 - $30,000 and completing at least a middle school education. While the majority indicated that they did not have health insurance, most indicated that they did have a regular source of health care. Additionally, while most had not been diagnosed with cancer, nearly half of the sample knew of someone diagnosed with cancer. Descriptive data regarding illness identity, illness coherence, timeline, causes, consequences, and controllability are provided. Results suggest that demographic factors (i.e. acculturation, education, and income), cultural constructs (i.e. fatalism and familism), intrapersonal factors (state and trait anxiety), and previous experience with cancer were associated with illness representations of breast cancer. The study adds to theliterature by systematically investigate illness representations of breast cancer and their determinants among a diverse sample of Hispanic men and women. This is a significant first step that can be used to guide and develop effective and culturally appropriate interventions that ultimately reduce disparities across the cancer continuum.Item The Influence of Peer Relationships on Latina Adolescents’ Experiences with Depressive Symptoms(Elsevier, 2020) McCord Stafford, Allison; Nagy, Gabriela; Gonzalez-Guarda, Rosa; Burke Draucker, Claire; School of NursingPurpose: Previous research has demonstrated that peers may play an integral role in the development of depressive symptoms among Latina adolescents; however, little is known about the function of peers in the ongoing management of depressive symptoms for Latina adolescents. The purpose of this study was to describe how peers influence Latina adolescents' experiences with the onset and ongoing management of depressive symptoms. Design and methods: Qualitative descriptive methods were used in conducting semi-structured interviews with twenty-five young Latinas (ages 13-20) who had a history of depressive symptoms during adolescence. Participants were asked to describe their experiences with depressive symptoms and how they interacted with others in relation to their depressive symptoms. Thematic analysis methods were used to identify common themes in how peers influenced Latina adolescents' experiences with depressive symptoms. Results: Latina adolescents experienced tensions with peers in the development, disclosure, and self-management of depressive symptoms. Peers were: 1) allies and bullies; 2) confidants and betrayers; and 3) up-lifters and downers. Conclusions: Peer relationships can be a source of risk and resiliency for Latina adolescents throughout the process of experiencing depressive symptoms. Practice implications: Interventions preventing or treating depression among Latina adolescents should capitalize on the strengths of peer relationships, while recognizing that peers may also contribute to risk.
