Item The 2013 Congregational Economic Impact Study(2013) School of Philanthropy Project TeamThis study draws upon three distinct periods to better understand the impact of the Great Recession. Respondents were asked to refer to the 2011 fiscal year, to compare years prior to 2011, and to provide information about conditions up to the first half of 2012. This study does not include complete fiscal year data for 2012. Moreover, since the timing of the Great Recession’s impact varied across North America, respondents answered recession-related questions based upon their own experience of when economic conditions were the worst for them.Item Caregiving experiences predict changes in spiritual well-being among family caregivers of cancer patients(Wiley Online Library, 2014-10) Adams, Rebecca N.; Mosher, Catherine E.; Cannady, Rachel S.; Lucette, Aurelie; Kim, Youngmee; Department of Psychology, School of ScienceOBJECTIVE: Although enhanced spiritual well-being has been linked to positive mental health outcomes among family caregivers of cancer patients, little is known regarding predictors of spiritual well-being in this population. The current study aimed to examine caregiving experiences as predictors of change in family caregivers' spiritual well-being during the initial months following the patient's cancer diagnosis. METHODS: Seventy family caregivers of newly diagnosed cancer patients (74% female, mean age = 59 years) participated in this longitudinal survey. Caregivers completed baseline questionnaires shortly before staying with the patient at an American Cancer Society Hope Lodge. Baseline questionnaires assessed caregiving experiences (i.e., self-esteem related to caregiving, family support for providing care, impact of caregiving on finances, and impact of caregiving on one's schedule). In addition, caregivers' spiritual well-being (i.e., meaning in life, peace, and faith) was assessed at baseline and 4-month follow-up. RESULTS: In univariate analyses, all caregiving experiences studied were associated with one or more aspects of spiritual well-being at 4-month follow-up. However, in the multivariate analysis, the only caregiving experience associated with aspects of spiritual well-being at 4-month follow-up was caregivers' perceptions of family support. Specifically, lack of family support was associated with lower levels of meaning and peace. CONCLUSIONS: Findings point to the importance of family support in facilitating the search for meaning and peace shortly after a loved one's cancer diagnosis and suggest that interventions targeting caregivers' support system may enhance their spiritual well-being.Item Common Traditions, Practices, and Beliefs Related to Safe Motherhood and Newborn Health in Morocco(MDPI, 2023-03-06) Moujahid, Chaimae; Turman, Jack E., Jr.; Amahdar, Loubna; Social and Behavioral Sciences, School of Public HealthThe cultural context influences women's antenatal care and postpartum knowledge. This study aims to determine the traditional practices related to maternal health in Morocco. We conducted in-depth qualitative interviews with 37 women from three different Moroccan regions on the first postpartum day. We used thematic content to analyze data, and an a priori coding framework was created utilizing the pertinent literature. Beliefs regarding pregnancy and postpartum positively affect maternal health, such as family support, prolonged rest for health recovery, and specific dietary precautions according to the mode of delivery of the new mother. However, some practices may negatively affect maternal health, such as cold postpartum treatment through traditional medicine and not seeking prenatal care after the first pregnancy experience. Such practices include painting newborns with henna, using kohl and oil to hasten the umbilical cord's descent, and producing solutions based on chicken throat to cure respiratory ailments in newborns that might harm their health.Item Cultivating Generosity: Perspectives from Latinx/Hispanic Leaders on Building Giving Cultures in Faith Communities(Lake Institute on Faith & Giving, 2024-10-16) Perkins, Carlos W.In April 2024, scholars, researchers, and practitioners came together to reflect on the theme of nurturing generosity within Hispanic/Latinx faith communities and explore these complex interconnections. The gathering provided a platform for sharing insights, strategies, and best practices aimed at fostering a culture of giving that resonates with the values and traditions of the Latinx community. Participants emphasized the importance of understanding the specific cultural contexts and religious beliefs that inform philanthropic behaviors. They also highlighted the need for inclusive approaches that recognize the diverse expressions of generosity within Hispanic/Latinx faith communities. This report seeks to synthesize the key themes and insights from the event, offering a comprehensive overview of the discussions and findings. By grounding our analysis in historical perspectives, contemporary analysis, and insights from leading practitioners across multiple sectors, we aim to provide a well-rounded understanding of the opportunities and challenges in nurturing generosity within Hispanic/Latinx faith communities. As the event demonstrated, fostering a culture of giving requires not only an appreciation of the unique cultural and religious landscapes of specific communities, but also a commitment to ongoing dialogue and collaboration. This report is a step toward that goal, providing a foundation for further exploration and engagement in this vital area of study and practice.Item Faith & Giving: From Christian Charity to Spiritual Practice(© 2004 by Robert Wuthnow Excerpts of more than 100 words from this publication may not be reproduced without permission.
