Item Adult Learning in the Urban Context: Community Engagement from the Voices of Four Adult Black Males(2020-09) Duff, Myron Carl, Jr.; Scheurich, James J.; Kazembe, Lasana; Merrill, Henry; Murtadha, KhaulaThe Loving Neighborhood was a very active ecosystem consisting of four communities (Capella, Carson, Midtown, and Summerville) that came together to form one larger community. Although the four neighborhoods’ ethnic makeup was about 30% Black, 30% Latino, and 30% White, the Carson community was predominantly Black. The Carson neighborhood had a very vibrant neighborhood association in which there were four adult Black males who actively participated in Carson’s economic and community development efforts. These men consistently attended neighborhood meetings, volunteered on community action committees, held community leadership positions, and participated regularly in local events. In order to understand the work of adult Black males who were seeking to improve the quality of life in a specific community context, this research sheds light on the “voices” of these four adult Black males as they attempted to foster neighborhood transformation by becoming more active in an Black urban community. It is imperative that the shared meanings of Black men be understood within the ecosystems in which they existed, emphasizing the importance of their conversations that addressed the needs of their communities. While previous research studies have explored adult learning and community engagement separately, these studies have failed to address how Black males could have helped Black communities in grassroots development efforts. Studies that have addressed these intersections could have provided valuable insight into why Black men became active in their communities, what they might have learned because of their community activism, how they remained motivated, and what skills they would have needed in order to effectively engage underserved neighborhoods. In response to this deficiency, this inquiry employed a critical approach to explore the importance of the unique voices of these four Black men as they participated in the transformation of their neighborhoods.Item The Bethel AME Church Archive: Partners and Participants(Facet Publishing, 2017) Copeland, Andrea J.Community archives have proven vital for giving a voice to underrepresented groups. Formal institutional archives have traditionally represented the dominant narrative in society and continue to do so, excluding access to cultural records and artifacts of underrepresented groups. Well-funded cultural heritage institutions have the infrastructures of support to provide long-term preservation and access on a global scale. Connecting community archives to this infrastructure of support is the overarching goal of my research (Copeland, 2015). How to make that connection in a way that respects the community and the purpose of the archive remains to be determined. This chapter will detail my journey with one particular community and its archive.Item Campus–Community Partnerships: The Terms of Engagement(2002-01-01) Bringle, Robert G.; Hatcher, Julie A.The emergence of service–learning in higher education and the renewed emphasis on community involvement presents colleges and universities with opportunities to develop campus–community partnerships for the common good. These partnerships can leverage both campus and community resources to address critical issues in local communities. Campus–community partnerships are a series of interpersonal relationships between (a) campus administrators, faculty, staff, and students and (b) community leaders, agency personnel, and members of communities. The phases of relationships (i.e., initiation, development, maintenance, dissolution) and the dynamics of relationships (i.e., exchanges, equity, distribution of power) are explored to provide service–learning instructors and campus personnel with a clearer understanding of how to develop healthy campus–community partnerships.Item Civic-Minded Rubric 2.0(2017-07-10) Weiss, H. Anne; Hahn, Thomas W.; Norris, Kristin E.The Civic-Minded Graduate Rubric 2.0 was developed in order to travel across multiple artifacts of and experiences in learning and service. The goal was to create a practical tool for faculty and staff to use when assessing either a large, broad civic learning goal related to obtaining a tertiary education- being a civic minded graduate- or assessing a certain aspect of being civic-minded as it relates to a specific learning experience, initiative, pedagogy or program (empathy, curiosity, depth of community engagement, etc.).Item Completing the Circle: Community Access to Translational Research and Scholarly Works(2015-10-12) Odell, Jere D.; Viehweg, StephanThis paper documents the development and outcomes of an intra-campus partnership that has changed the culture of scholarship and dissemination at a university that values community-engaged and translational research. Translating Research into Practice (TRIP) was established by Chancellor Charles Bantz and Dr. Sandra Petronio in 2003 to identify, celebrate and promote translational research; research that uses generated knowledge to solve problems and make lives better. In addition to sponsoring awards and convening regular translational research showcases, TRIP started a website and invited faculty members to post descriptions of their translational research projects. In the process, these TRIP scholars provided a public-facing, web-based inventory of scholarship relevant to the community. ScholarWorks, an open access, web-based repository for posting faculty and student articles, theses, proceedings, posters and other creations, was launched in 2004 by the Dean of the University Library. As an open access repository, ScholarWorks gave the campus the ability to share research with a broad community of students, educators, health care workers, policy makers, citizens, and readers without worrying about subscription paywalls or limited access to printed materials. Recently, it became clear to both TRIP and to ScholarWorks that these efforts were complimentary and could be aligned in ways that would increase participation in both programs. In addition, by freely sharing access to the scholarly publications resulting from community-based and translational research projects, the TRIP-ScholarWorks partnership helps to complete the circle of benefits to community, student and research stakeholders. Similar partnerships could be pursued on many campuses.Item Digital scholarship and open access: Sharing research and scholarship in new ways(2018-05-11) Odell, Jere D.Item Evaluating Digital Stories as Authentic Evidence of Civic-Mindedness(Center for Service & Learning, IUPUI, 2014-12) Hahn, Thomas W.; Norris, Kristin E.; Weiss, AnneUsing the Civic-Minded Graduate and the Association of American Colleges & Universities VALUE Rubric, digital stories created by recipients of co-curricular service-based scholarship programs were analyzed to document authentic evidence of civic-mindedness. The findings indicate that: * Digital stories are an effective tool to capture evidence of civic learning. * Students showed high levels of civic identity on both rubrics. * The research increased understanding of the similarities and differences in terms of how the two rubrics measure civic learning and capture variance in civic-mindedness.Item "Every Interaction is an Intervention": A Case Study Employing a Communication Complex Approach to Addressing Community Mental Health in a Low-Middle Income Country(2024-03) Goodin, Lisann Renee; Parrish-Sprowl, John; Longtin, Krista; Goering, Beth; Schwebach, GaryHistorically, community engagement projects have been addressed from traditional approaches of looking at physical, mental, and social health separately instead of seeing how they are intertwined elements in making up a person’s whole health. Implying the systemic connection between all health and not just the absence of disease engages the World Health Organization’s definition of health. There is a need to shift to a complex approach known as communication complex that better supports complex environments like Low-Middle Income Countries. Communication complex is a meta-perspective that helps design a quantum complexity framework that engages the bioactive nature of communication and the systemic interconnection of everything. When communication complex is applied to the context of health, this is known as Communication for Whole Health which is an interventional framework. This approach informed the development of the following research questions: RQ1: How might researchers meld into a community to promote CWH? RQ2: How can the shifting trajectory from a culture of reactivity to one of receptivity be assessed? The methodological approach for this study is looking at a case study as an ethnographic participant observer within participatory action research to observe and understand where interventions have occurred within the community. This study found that researchers can meld into a community through a relational multi-interventional process by focusing on building healthy relationships with Communication for Whole Health practices. Further findings discovered that to assess how a culture shifts from a culture of reactivity to receptivity, this occurs through an evaluative approach that is not traditional of being done to an organization but rather observing how relationships change in conversation. In conclusion, using a Communication for Whole Health approach for community engagement that moves from object to relational provides a better framework to respond to a complex environment with minimal resources.Item Issues with archiving community data(Facet Publishing, 2017) Spotts, Lydia; Copeland, Andrea J.Transportation in Indianapolis is evolving. The bicycle, two-wheeled agitator of a similar transportation revolution across the United States in the 1890s, is back. The city landscape, overwhelmingly distinguished by auto-centric design, is increasingly being reshaped to support cycling as the economic impact of these alterations changes perceptions and the cycling movement gains momentum. How to document the impact of an urban landscape in flux from the perspective of a loosely codified community centered on cycling is a considerable challenge worthy of consideration by archivists and information professionals in general.Item Perceptions of IUPUI Faculty and Staff Regarding the Center for Service and Learning Faculty/Staff Development Programs(IUPUI ScholarWorks, 2019-08-06) Makki Alamdari, Sara; Hahn, Thomas; Price, Mary F.; Studer, MorganThe purpose of this evaluation was to understand perceptions of IUPUI faculty and staff regarding the influence of the Center for Service and Learning’s (CSL) programs and resources on respondents. Specifically, the evaluation was intended to deepen CSL’s understanding of respondents’ experiences as community-engaged professionals at IUPUI. Additionally, the evaluation sought to gather input on new ideas to strengthen CSL services and programming going forward. IUPUI faculty and staff who have participated in CSL workshops, trainings, and/or requested information from CSL were emailed during the fall of 2018 and asked to participate in the Qualtrics survey. The survey was anonymous. This report shares overall findings from the survey and provides general recommendations.
