Item Embedded System for Sensor Communication and Security(2010) An, Feng; Rizkalla, Maher; Li, Lingxi; Du, Yingzi; Salama, Paul; Knieser, MichaelIn this work, inter-integrated circuit mode (I2C) software was used to communicate between sensors and the embedded control system, utilizing PIC182585 MPLAB hardware. These sensors were built as part of a system on board that includes the sensors, microcontroller, and interface circuitry. The hardware includes the PIC18 processor, FPGA chip, and peripherals. A FPGA chip was used to interface the processor with the peripherals in order to operate at the same clock speed. This hardware design features high level of integration, reliability, high precision, and high speed communications. The software was first designed to operate each sensor separately, then the sensor system was integrated (to combine all sensors, microcontroller, and interfacing circuitries), and the software was updated to provide various actions if triggered by the sensors. Actions taken by the processor may include alarming signals that are based on threshold values received from the sensors, and inquiring temperature and CO2 readings. The system was designed for HVAC (heating, ventilating and air conditioning) applications and industrial settings. The overall system incorporating temperature and CO2 sensors was implemented and successfully tested. The response of the multi-sensor system was agreeable with the design parameters. The system may be expanded to include other sensors such as light senor, pressure sensor, etc. Monitoring the threshold values should add to the security features of the integrated communication system. This design features low power consumption (utilizing the sleeping mode of the processors), high speed communications, security, and flexibility to expansion.Item FAULT DIAGNOSIS OF ELECTRONIC FUEL CONTROL (EFC) VALVES VIA DYNAMIC PERFORMANCE TEST METHOD(ProQuest, 2009) Tugsal, Umut; Li, Lingxi; Chen, Yaobin; Anwar, SohelElectronic Fuel Control (EFC) valve regulates fuel flow to the injector fuel supply line in the Cummins Pressure Time (PT) fuel system. The EFC system controls the fuel flow by means of a variable orifice that is electrically actuated. The supplier of the EFC valves inspects all parts before they are sent out. Their inspection test results provide a characteristic curve which shows the relationship between pressure and current provided to the EFC valve. This curve documents the steady state characteristics of the valve but does not adequately capture its dynamic response. A dynamic test procedure is developed in order to evaluate the performance of the EFC valves. The test itself helps to understand the effects that proposed design changes will have on the stability of the overall engine system. A by product of this test is the ability to evaluate returned EFC valves that have experienced stability issues. The test determines whether an EFC valve is faulted or not before it goes out to prime time use. The characteristics of a good valve and bad valve can be observed after the dynamic test. In this thesis, a mathematical model has been combined with experimental research to investigate and understand the behavior of the characteristics of different types of EFC valves. The model takes into account the dynamics of the electrical and mechanical portions of the EFC valves. System Identification has been addressed to determine the transfer functions of the different types of EFC valves that were experimented. Methods have been used both in frequency domain as well as time domain. Also, based on the characteristic patterns exhibited by the EFC valves, fuzzy logic has been implemented for the use of pattern classification.Item OPTIMAL ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM OF PLUG-IN HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLE(ProQuest, 2009) Banvait, Harpreetsingh; Anwar, Sohel; Chen, Yaobin; Eberhart, Russell C.Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) are new generation Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) with larger battery capacity compared to Hybrid Electric Vehicles. They can store electrical energy from a domestic power supply and can drive the vehicle alone in Electric Vehicle (EV) mode. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation 80 % of the American driving public on average drives under 50 miles per day. A PHEV vehicle that can drive up to 50 miles by making maximum use of cheaper electrical energy from a domestic supply can significantly reduce the conventional fuel consumption. This may also help in improving the environment as PHEVs emit less harmful gases. However, the Energy Management System (EMS) of PHEVs would have to be very different from existing EMSs of HEVs. In this thesis, three different Energy Management Systems have been designed specifically for PHEVs using simulated study. For most of the EMS development mathematical vehicle models for powersplit drivetrain configuration are built and later on the results are tested on advanced vehicle modeling tools like ADVISOR or PSAT. The main objective of the study is to design EMSs to reduce fuel consumption by the vehicle. These EMSs are compared with existing EMSs which show overall improvement. x In this thesis the final EMS is designed in three intermediate steps. First, a simple rule based EMS was designed to improve the fuel economy for parametric study. Second, an optimized EMS was designed with the main objective to improve fuel economy of the vehicle. Here Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique is used to obtain the optimum parameter values. This EMS has provided optimum parameters which result in optimum blended mode operation of the vehicle. Finally, to obtain optimum charge depletion and charge sustaining mode operation of the vehicle an advanced PSO EMS is designed which provides optimal results for the vehicle to operate in charge depletion and charge sustaining modes. Furthermore, to implement the developed advanced PSO EMS in real-time a possible real time implementation technique is designed using neural networks. This neural network implementation provides sub-optimal results as compared to advanced PSO EMS results but it can be implemented in real time in a vehicle. These EMSs can be used to obtain optimal results for the vehicle driving conditions such that fuel economy is improved. Moreover, the optimal designed EMS can also be implemented in real-time using the neural network procedure described.Item A NEW APPROACH FOR HUMAN IDENTIFICATION USING THE EYE(2010) Thomas, N. Luke; Du, Yingzi; Rizkalla, Maher; King, BrianThe vein structure in the sclera, the white and opaque outer protective covering of the eye, is anecdotally stable over time and unique to each person. As a result, it is well suited for use as a biometric for human identification. A few researchers have performed sclera vein pattern recognition and have reported promising, but low accuracy, initial results. Sclera recognition poses several challenges: the vein structure moves and deforms with the movement of the eye and its surrounding tissues; images of sclera patterns are often defocused and/or saturated; and, most importantly, the vein structure in the sclera is multi-layered and has complex non-linear deformation. The previous approaches in sclera recognition have treated the sclera patterns as a one-layered vein structure, and, as a result, their sclera recognition accuracy is not high. In this thesis, we propose a new method for sclera recognition with the following contributions: First, we developed a color-based sclera region estimation scheme for sclera segmentation. Second, we designed a Gabor wavelet based sclera pattern enhancement method, and an adaptive thresholding method to emphasize and binarize the sclera vein patterns. Third, we proposed a line descriptor based feature extraction, registration, and matching method that is scale-, orientation-, and deformation-invariant, and can mitigate the multi-layered deformation effects and tolerate segmentation error. It is empirically verified using the UBIRIS and IUPUI multi-wavelength databases that the proposed method can perform accurate sclera recognition. In addition, the recognition results are compared to iris recognition algorithms, with very comparable results.Item A HIGHLY PRECISE AND LINEAR IC FOR HEAT PULSE BASED THERMAL BIDIRECTIONAL MASS FLOW SENSOR(2010) Radadia, Jasmin Dhirajlal; Rizkalla, Maher; Chen, Yaobin; Li, LingxiIn this work we have designed and simulated a thermal bi-directional integrated circuit mass flow sensor. The approach used here was an extension to the gas flow model given by Mayer and Lechner. The design features high precision response received from analog integrated circuits. A computational fluid dynamic (CFD) model was designed for simulations with air and water Using COMSOL Multiphysics. Established mathematical models for the heat flow equations including CFD parameters were used within COMSOL simulation(COMSOL Multiphysics, Sweden). Heat pulses of 55 °C for a period of nearly 120 seconds and 50% duty cycles were applied as thermal sources to the flowstream. The boundary conditions of the heat equations at the solid (heating element) fluid interface were set up in the software for the thermal response. The hardware design included one heating element and two sensing elements to detect the bi-directional mass flow. Platinum sensors were used due to their linear characteristics within 0 ºC to 100 ºC range, and their high temperature coefficient(0.00385 Ω/Ω/ºC). Polyimide thinfilm heater was used as the heating element due to its high throughput and good thermal efficiency. Two bridge circuits were used to sense the temperature distribution in the vicinity of the sensing elements. Three high precision instrumentation low power amplifiers with offset voltage ~2.5μV (50μV max) were used for bridge signal amplification and the difference circuit. The difference circuit was used to indicate the flow direction. A LM555 timer chip was utilized to provide the heat pulse period. Simulation and experimental measurements for heat pulses with different amplitude (temperature) were in good agreement. Also, the sensitivity of the flow sensor was observed to remain unaffected with the change in the duty cycle of the heat operation mode.Item Average Consensus in Wireless Sensor Networks with Probabilistic Network Links(2010) Saed, Steve; Li, Lingxi; Kim, Dongsoo S.; King, BrianThis study proposes and evaluates an average consensus scheme for wireless sensor networks. For this purpose, two communication error models, the fading signal error model and approximated fading signal error model, are introduced and incorporated into the proposed decentralized average consensus scheme. Also, a mathematical analysis is introduced to derive the approximated fading signal model from the fading signal model. Finally, differnt simulation scenarios are introduced and their results analyzed to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme and its effectiveness in meeting the needs of wireless sensor networks.Item A Dynamically Configurable Discrete Event Simulation Framework for Many-Core System-on-Chips(2010) Barnes, Christopher J.; Lee, Jaehwan John; King, Brian S.; Chien, Yung Ping StanleyIndustry trends indicate that many-core heterogeneous processors will be the next-generation answer to Moore's law and reduced power consumption. Thus, both academia and industry are focused on the challenges presented by many-core heterogeneous processor designs. In many cases, researchers use discrete event simulators to research and validate new computer architecture innovations. However, there is a lack of dynamically configurable discrete event simulation environments for the testing and development of many-core heterogeneous processors. To fulfill this need we present Mhetero, a retargetable framework for cycle-accurate simulation of heterogeneous many-core processors along with the cycle-accurate simulation of their associated network-on-chip communication infrastructure. Mhetero is the result of research into dynamically configurable and highly flexible simulation tools with which users are free to produce custom instruction sets and communication methods in a highly modular design environment. In this thesis we will discuss our approach to dynamically configurable discrete event simulation and present several experiments performed using the framework to exemplify how Mhetero, and similarly constructed simulators, may be used for future innovations.Item EXPANSION OF DYNAMIC SIMULATION MODEL FOR A DISTRIBUTED GENERATOR UNINTENTIONAL ISLANDING DETECTION SCHEME(2010) Vasquez, Diana C.; Rovnyak, Steven; Rizkalla, Maher; Chen, YaobinThe interconnection of distributed resources requires specific voltage regulation, monitoring, protective relaying, power quality, and islanding detection. For this reason IEEE established standard IEEE 1547 that ensures the compliance with such requirements and it will help formulate technical specifications for grid interconnection with Distributed Generator (DG) resources. In search of meeting the IEEE 1547 standard requirement of detecting unintentional islanded operation, there has been ongoing research to develop anti-islanding methods that can detect the different changes that can occur when the grid is disconnected. A team of Electrical Engineering faculty at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis has worked previously on testing a DG unintentional Islanding Detection Scheme. This scheme uses an active anti-islanding method in which a small 1 Hz perturbation signal is added into the DG system and it helps detect when the grid is disconnected. The scheme uses the premise that a frequency deviation caused by perturbation to the system is smaller when the grid is connected than when it is in an island. In an initial dynamic simulation model for the islanding detection scheme, a two-machine microgrid system is used to explore frequency and voltage responses when the grid is disconnected. In this thesis, the two-machine microgrid is expanded to a ten-machine system so it can be shown that the frequency deviation caused by a perturbation signal is much smaller when the grid is connected even for a larger DG network. The 1 Hz component of the DG electrical frequency in a multiple machine microgrid system is also calculated in this thesis. This project was conducted in different stages. First, it was necessary to calculate the steady state power flow and electric power of a three-machine system and update the two-machine MATLAB program with the necessary changes. After making the changes, it was necessary to simulate the system and adjust the inertia of the machine that represents the grid to ensure that the simulation output was close in magnitude to previous testing results. When the three-machine system was successfully generated, a brand new program was created so a multiple machine system could be simulated. Then the multiple machine program was used to simulate and experiment with up to a ten-machine system. Finally a program to calculate the 1 Hz component of the DG electrical frequency was generated and used to show that the magnitude squared of the 1 Hz component is inversely proportional to the number of machines connected to the system. These last findings will later help set the threshold for islanding detection appropriately for different numbers of DG.Item EFFICIENT AND SECURE IMAGE AND VIDEO PROCESSING AND TRANSMISSION IN WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORKS(2010) Assegie, Samuel; King, Brian; Salama, Paul; Rizkalla, MaherSensor nodes forming a network and using wireless communications are highly useful in a variety of applications including battle field (military) surveillance, building security, medical and health services, environmental monitoring in harsh conditions, for scientific investigations on other planets, etc. But these wireless sensors are resource constricted: limited power supply, bandwidth for communication, processing speed, and memory space. One possible way of achieve maximum utilization of those constrained resource is applying signal processing and compressing the sensor readings. Usually, processing data consumes much less power than transmitting data in wireless medium, so it is effective to apply data compression by trading computation for communication before transmitting data for reducing total power consumption by a sensor node. However the existing state of the art compression algorithms are not suitable for wireless sensor nodes due to their limited resource. Therefore there is a need to design signal processing (compression) algorithms considering the resource constraint of wireless sensors. In our work, we designed a lightweight codec system aiming surveillance as a target application. In designing the codec system, we have proposed new design ideas and also tweak the existing encoding algorithms to fit the target application. Also during data transmission among sensors and between sensors and base station, the data has to be secured. We have addressed some security issues by assessing the security of wavelet tree shuffling as the only security mechanism.Item Design of Switching Strategy for Adaptive Cruise Control Under String Stability Constraints(2010) Zhai, Yao; Chen, Yaobin; Widmann, Glenn R.; Li, LingxiAn Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system is a driver assistance system that assists a driver to improve driving safety and driving comfort. The design of ACC controller often involves the design of a switching logic that decides where and when to switch between the two modes in order to ameliorate driving comfort, mitigate the chance of a potential collision with the preceding vehicle while reduce long-distance driving load from the driver. In this thesis, a new strategy for designing ACC controller is proposed. The proposed control strategy utilizes Range vs. Range-rate chart to illustrate the relationship between headway distance and velocity difference, and then find out a constant deceleration trajectory on the chart, which the following vehicle is controlled to follow. This control strategy has a shorter elapsed time than existing ones while still maintaining a relatively safe distance during transient process. String stability issue has been addressed by many researchers after the adaptive cruise control (ACC) concept was developed. The main problem is when many vehicles with ACC controller forming a vehicle platoon end to end, how the control algorithm is designed to ensure that the spacing error, which is the deviation of the actual range from the desired headway distance, would not amplify as the number of following vehicles increases downstream along the platoon. In this thesis, string stability issues have been taken into consideration and constraints of parameters of an ACC controller are derived to mitigate steady state error propagation.
