Item The Bonfire Methodology: A project management methodology for those in the dark(2019-10-25) Maixner, GaryItem ContentDM accessibility(2019-08-08) Maixner, GaryItem Designing and Implementing a Dark Mode for a Library Website(WEAVE, 2023) Maixner, Gary; Smith, AndyDark mode, also known as night mode, is an alternative way of viewing content on a webpage. Rather than having dark text on a light background, dark mode displays light text on a dark background. In fall 2022, the Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) University Library launched a dark mode as an option for web users. We present some considerations for design and implementation for those interested in adding a dark mode to their website.Item Designing Games for Your Classroom - A Basic Primer(2023) Maixner, GaryItem Engineering a Powerfully Simple Interlibrary Loan Experience with InstantILL(2019-10-11) Paxton, Mike; Maixner, Gary; McArthur, Joseph; Baich, TinaIUPUI University Library (UL) has long recognized the need to advance open access and the crucial role resource sharing services play in bridging between the subscription-based world and an Open world. Resource sharing professionals frequently use library services to search for and retrieve known items, and thus have a key role not only in the provision of services but in demanding better discovery systems, promoting new and better discovery and delivery tools, and educating users. As services such as Primo, EDS, and Google Scholar combine with library website design to promote central indexes, it is increasingly unrealistic to expect the average user to search multiple unpromoted channels for what they need, and so libraries must work to make all aspects of discovery and delivery similarly straightforward. Resource sharing professionals can make significant inroads in improving discovery and delivery of open access and subscription content by partnering with Open projects to improve the library user’s experience when searching for known content. This paper will share how UL has taken a concrete step in this direction by working with the Open Access Button to develop InstantILL, a simple, community-owned, search tool for students and researchers to get free, fast, and legal access to articles. With a simple interface that users expect, InstantILL integrates searching library holdings, searching open access materials, and submitting interlibrary loan requests into a single action. Attendees will learn why the library chose to pursue this project, what InstantILL is and how it was designed and developed, and the results of the implementation.Item From applicant to employee: developing and evaluating an inclusive hiring and onboarding process(Association of College and Research Libraries, 2024) Lowe, M. Sara; Maixner, Gary; Orr, KindraAs part of an effort to improve employee hiring and onboarding, the authors’ library instituted more robust people-centered hiring, onboarding and evaluation processes which align with the library’s diversity, equity, and inclusion strategic priority. The goal of this process and evaluation is to ensure new hires feel connected to and ownership of their onboarding through formal and consistent solicitation and incorporation of stakeholder feedback. The process consists of multiple stages. One, a sixteen-item survey is sent to all applicants afforded interviews, including first round interviews, and second round interviews either virtual via Zoom, or on site. Two, applicants invited for a second-round interview are provided an extensive online guide which lays out details of the library and the wider community. Three, a robust, mindful onboarding schedule is created which spans the first month of the new hire’s employment. Four, user experience activities are conducted with new employees at several points during their first year at the library. These activities gather qualitative feedback to help library human resources determine the effectiveness and receptivity of the onboarding process. This chapter details the implementation and analysis of these hiring and onboarding processes. It includes results from the surveys, steps that the library has taken to act on that feedback, and a model for how other libraries can do this.Item IUPUI Open Education Week Celebration: Project Management Files(2019) Maixner, GaryThese project management files describe the objectives and plan for the IUPUI Open Education Award in 2019. These files can be modified to develop an open education award at another campus.Item Keeping Users in the Dark: The Design and Implementation of a Dark Mode for a University Library Website(2022-05-25) Maixner, Gary; Smith, AndyDark modes of websites have become a popular feature for users in recent years. While the option to create a contrast mode has existed for decades at the system level, what we are seeing now are designs not only focused on accessibility, but also usability. Library personnel at the Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis University Library took it upon themselves to follow this trend and begin the design, development, and implementation of a dark mode version of the library’s website. This involved some trial and error in the initial prototype, taking feedback from users, and then writing the new stylesheet.Item Make Fun of Learning!(2020-04-29) Maixner, GaryItem Make It Easy, Make It Quick: Using InDesign and Photoshop to Iterate and Prepare your Game for Publication(2019-07-11) Maixner, GaryPrinting a tabletop game of your own design through a print-on-demand service can be an affirming experience, but comes with a series of challenges that are unique to game design. This presentation will demonstrate how to take advantage of the mail merge tools in Adobe InDesign to prepare game assets to be uploaded and printed via on-demand printing services. Participants will learn how to properly format a spreadsheet, use Adobe InDesign for rapid iteration, and then use Photoshop to finish the process. Participants will also learn how to upload their materials to “The Game Crafter,” to be printed.
