Do you want to learn more about how librarians can increase their bargaining power? Please join Katharine Macy, Scarlet Galvan, and Courtney Fuson of the IMLS-funded ONEAL Project (Open Negotiation for Academic Libraries, https://oneal-project.org) and explore a new open educational resource available to library workers who wish to develop these skills. Negotiating is often a skill set that is largely learned while on the job or through continuing education opportunities that may be costly and not library-focused. In addition, many library workers feel anxiety about the negotiation process. In this session, explore how negotiation skills: • create more productive conversations that create more options. • foster a sustainable relationship with resource vendors. • empower library workers through an open online curriculum to teach these skills. The session will introduce the Foundations learning module launched in April and the brand-new Strategies module launched in Fall 2024, which dives deeper into strategies (setting priorities, vendor and internal stakeholder management, and contracts and licensing strategy).Item Launching a negotiation curriculum: Discovering and addressing challenges faced during resource negotiations(2024-03-04) Macy, Katharine V.; Galvan, Scarlet; Fuson, CourtneyThis presentation summarizes an interview study that was conducted to understand common issues and challenges that academic librarians face when negotiating with vendors. The results were used to inform content creation of a new OER launching in the first half of 2024 to teach negotiation skills and strategy.Item Learn how to negotiate for a more sustainable future(2024-06-30) Macy, Katharine V.; Galvan, Scarlet; Fuson, CourtneyDo you negotiate for resources or services for your library? Did you have to learn negotiation skills and strategies on the job? Did you never imagine that you’d have to understand the nitty gritty of contracts and licensing? If so, you will leave this session aware of a new free resource and community that can support you in developing your negotiation knowledge and skills. The ONEAL Project has developed a new open educational resource (OER) that includes lectures, readings, assessments, and hand-on assignments where learners will not only learn negotiation best practices and strategies but will also begin doing preparation work that can be immediately applied when negotiating on the job. In addition to learning about this resource attendees will learn about the community being created to provide support for library professionals as well as key issues and trends uncovered during community forums and through an interview research study. Note that the project has focused on creating content for academic libraries (community colleges, liberal arts colleges, universities, and related consortia) and MLIS programs wishing to teach this skill set. While the content developed around licensing is geared toward an academic audience, the negotiation strategy and planning techniques in the OER are widely applicable across all types of libraries. The Open Negotiation for Academic Libraries (ONEAL) project has been generously funded through the IMLS Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program. Learning Objectives: Describe key issues facing library professionals as they negotiate with vendors. Access an open educational resource that will enable them to plan and execute strategic negotiations. Find a community that can support their efforts as they navigate sticky issues during negotiations.Item ONEAL Glossary(2024-03-28) Fuson, Courtney; Macy, Katharine V.; Galvan, ScarletGlossary for the curriculum created by the ONEAL Project (Open Negotiation Education for Academic Libraries).Item Open Negotiation Education for Academic Libraries – Introducing the ONEAL Project(2024-08-14) Macy, Katharine V.; Galvan, Scarlet; Fuson, CourtneyCAUL welcomes the team from the ONEAL Project who will speak about the valuable work the organisation provides in developing curricula and open educational resources to support negotiation education for academic libraries and Master of Library Science (MLS/MLIS) programs. These resources introduce negotiation theory and practical strategy using academic library context of negotiating vendor agreements. The open curriculum will include introductions to critical issues in academic libraries as they intersect with contract negotiations such as user privacy, platform governance, emerging publishing models, author rights, and computational collections research. Speaking on behalf of the ONEAL Project will be Katharine V. Macy (Project Director/Principal Investigator), Scarlet Galvan (Co-Principal Investigator. Collection Strategist Librarian, Grand Valley State University Libraries) and Courtney Fuson (Co-Principal Investigator. Asset Management Librarian and Subject Liaison to Education at Belmont University). This session will be highly useful for library staff experienced with licence negotiations as well as those with less experience, and those likely to be involved in negotiations in future.Item Open Playing Fields: Addressing Scale and Access in Negotiation through OER(2023-05-21) Macy, Katharine V.; Galvan, A. Scarlet; Fuson, CourtneyLearn about the IMLS-funded Open Negotiation Education for Academic Libraries Project, a multi-institution collaboration to develop curriculum and open educational resources (OER) focused on negotiation, including foundations of negotiation, strategies for managing internal and external relationships, and current and futures issues in acquisitions in the context of academic libraries’ work with vendors. A core ethos of the project is that something created to serve the community must be made with the community, and we are committed to citing the work of underrepresented library workers as part of the curriculum and OER. This presentation will walk through the curriculum, focusing on the key module(s) around negotiations, before opening the session for discussion, feedback, and opportunities to collaborate with the project team.Item Preparing academic libraries to negotiate a sustainable future(2023-03-17) Macy, Katharine V.; Galvan, A. Scarlet; Fuson, CourtneyLearn about a multi-institutional project developing curriculum and open educational resources (OER) to equip academic library workers with negotiation skills within the context of academic libraries work with third party vendors. The project team is intentionally working to center the experiences of BIPOC library workers through each stage of the project including curriculum design, OER creation, and pilot testing. This presentation will walk through the key learnings around negotiations and the curriculum, before opening the session for discussion and feedback. A core ethos of the project is that something created to serve the community cannot be made without the community. Learning Outcomes: Participants will be able to articulate why negotiation skills are a necessary skill set for work and life. Participants will understand key issues facing academic library workers when negotiating with third-party vendors so that they may begin to proactively plan how to address at their own institutions. Participants will gain resources to get started in developing negotiation skills so that they may be more prepared for their next negotiation at work.
