Abstract

Presentation slides for lecture delivered by Richard B. Gunderman, MD, PhD (Chancellor’s Professor of Radiology, Pediatrics, Medical Education, Philosophy, Liberal Arts, Philanthropy, and Medical Humanities and Health Studies, John A. Campbell Professor of Radiology, Indiana University) on November 14, 2024. Indiana’s history of medicine society is named in honor of Hoosier John Shaw Billings, yet most medical school faculty, residents, and students know little to nothing about Billings. In short, he was one of the greatest polymaths in the history of American medicine, whose contributions to the profession and many other fields are virtually unparalleled. By revisiting Billings’ contributions, we not only pay honor to this great man but also fuel our own imaginations and find inspiration about the contributions we are capable of making.
