Abstract

The state of Indiana, like many, has a significant number of individuals who seek treatment for substance abuse. Social workers are primary providers of substance abuse treatment and also provide indirect services to individuals and families experiencing difficulties related to substance abuse. Social work must have knowledge of substance abuse in order to make appropriate assessments, referrals, and provide treatment to Indiana residents. This translational project demonstrates how basic academic content related to substance abuse is disseminated to graduate social work students in order to provide them with a knowledge base about substance dependence on which their academic courses build and compliment. This presentation will allow attendees to view the online-based modules provided via Oncourse, the IU educational platform. Each MSW student must complete the modules as a part of their foundation practicum in the second semester of their graduate work. The six core content modules include a basic understanding of substance dependence as a brain disease, assessment of abuse/dependence, dual disorders, family dynamics, ethics, and evidence based practices. Each module has an introduction inclusive of objectives, a presentation of content, related resources, and a learning quiz. Upon completion of the modules, students take an exam and a passing score of 85% or higher awards a certificate of successful completion. This project was supported by the Indiana Alcohol Research Center funded by NIAAA.
