Abstract
Climate philanthropy encompasses a broad range of efforts, from major foundation-led initiatives to local non-governmental organization (NGO) programs, and donations from both high-net-worth and everyday donors worldwide. This brief explores the history and global role of formal climate philanthropy, examining its contributions to climate finance and action, along with its growing shift toward climate justice. Philanthropy-backed, NGO-led initiatives are driving meaningful climate action at local, national, and global levels. The From the Field collection highlights some of this impactful work. Recognizing that Indigenous communities have long served as stewards of the natural world and continue to advocate for its protection globally, the Indigenous Action Spotlight explores how Indigenous knowledge and practices have shaped forest conservation in Nepal—underscoring the vital role of grassroots movements in climate action and offering pathways for more meaningful collaboration between philanthropic funders and Indigenous communities.
