Abstract
A new philosophy has taken hold in the world of international development and is succeeding in rewriting the rules of the game about how to achieve sustainable reductions in poverty. Key to this philosophy is robust financial flows of all types—The Index of Global Philanthropy and Remittances 2012 private capital, philanthropy and remittances—to the developing world. These flows have proven to be sustainable even in the face of global recession. In 2010, private capital investment, philanthropy and remittances from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development’s 23 Development Assistance Committee (DAC) members to countries in the developing world amounted to $575 billion, up from $455 billion in 2009.
