Item Smart Kitchens for People with Cognitive Impairments: A Qualitative Study of Design Requirements(ACM, 2018-04) Kosch, Thomas; Woźniak, Paweł W.; Brady, Erin; Schmidt, Albrecht; Human-Centered Computing, School of Informatics and ComputingIndividuals with cognitive impairments currently leverage extensive human resources during their transitions from assisted living to independent living. In Western Europe, many government-supported volunteer organizations provide sheltered living facilities; supervised environments in which people with cognitive impairments collaboratively learn daily living skills. In this paper, we describe communal cooking practices in sheltered living facilities and identify opportunities for supporting these with interactive technology to reduce volunteer workload. We conducted two contextual observations of twelve people with cognitive impairments cooking in sheltered living facilities and supplemented this data through interviews with four employees and volunteers who supervise them. Through thematic analysis, we identified four themes to inform design requirements for communal cooking activities: Work organization, community, supervision, and practicalities. Based on these, we present five design implications for assistive systems in kitchens for people with cognitive deficiencies.Item Untold Stories in User-Centered Design of Mobile Health: Practical Challenges and Strategies Learned From the Design and Evaluation of an App for Older Adults With Heart Failure(JMIR Publications, 2020-07-21) Cornet, Victor Philip; Toscos, Tammy; Bolchini, Davide; Ghahari, Romisa Rohani; Ahmed, Ryan; Daley, Carly; Mirro, Michael J.; Holden, Richard J.; Medicine, School of MedicineBackground User-centered design (UCD) is a powerful framework for creating useful, easy-to-use, and satisfying mobile health (mHealth) apps. However, the literature seldom reports the practical challenges of implementing UCD, particularly in the field of mHealth. Objective This study aims to characterize the practical challenges encountered and propose strategies when implementing UCD for mHealth. Methods Our multidisciplinary team implemented a UCD process to design and evaluate a mobile app for older adults with heart failure. During and after this process, we documented the challenges the team encountered and the strategies they used or considered using to address those challenges. Results We identified 12 challenges, 3 about UCD as a whole and 9 across the UCD stages of formative research, design, and evaluation. Challenges included the timing of stakeholder involvement, overcoming designers’ assumptions, adapting methods to end users, and managing heterogeneity among stakeholders. To address these challenges, practical recommendations are provided to UCD researchers and practitioners. Conclusions UCD is a gold standard approach that is increasingly adopted for mHealth projects. Although UCD methods are well-described and easily accessible, practical challenges and strategies for implementing them are underreported. To improve the implementation of UCD for mHealth, we must tell and learn from these traditionally untold stories.Item User Personas to Guide Technology Intervention Design to Support Caregiver-Assisted Medication Management(Oxford, 2022-11) Linden, Anna; Loganathar, Priya; Holden, Richard; Boustani, Malaz; Campbell, Noll; Ganci, Aaron; Werner, Nicole; Herron School of ArtInformal caregivers often help manage medications for people with ADRD. Caregiver-assisted medication management has the potential to optimize outcomes for caregivers and people with ADRD, but is often associated with suboptimal outcomes. We used the user-centered design persona method to represent the needs of ADRD caregivers who manage medications for people with ADRD to guide future design decisions for technology interventions. Data were collected through virtual contextual inquiry in which caregivers (Nf24) sent daily multimedia text messages depicting medication management activities for seven days each, followed by an interview that used the messages as prompts to understand medication management needs. We applied the persona development method to the data to identify distinct caregiver personas, i.e., evidence-derived groups of prospective users of a future intervention. We used team-based affinity diagramming to organize information about participants based on intragroup (dis)similarities, to create meaningful clusters representing intervention-relevant attributes. We then used group consensus discussion to create personas based on attribute clusters. The six identified attributes differentiating personas were: 1. medication acquisition, 2. medication organization, 3. medication administration, 4. monitoring symptoms, 5. care network, 6. technology preferences. Three personas were identified based on differences on those attributes: Regimented Ruth (independent, proactive, tech savvy, controls all medications), Intuitive Ian (collaborative, uses own judgment, some technology, provides some medication autonomy), Passive Pamela (reactive, easy going, technology novice, provides full medication autonomy). These personas can be used to guide technology intervention design by evaluating how well intervention designs support each of them.Item User-testing of a decision-support tool for parents facing threatened periviable delivery: The Periviable GOALS decision aid(Elsevier, 2021-06) Tucker Edmonds, Brownsyne; Hoffman, Shelley A.; Laitano, Tatiana; Coleman-Phox, Kimberly; Castillo, Esperanza; Kuppermann, Miriam; Obstetrics and Gynecology, School of MedicineBackground To report user-centered design methods and stakeholder acceptability ratings of the Periviable GOALS (Getting Optimal Alignment around Life Support) decision aid (DA). Methods ‘Experienced’ and ‘expectant’ mothers engaged in content and design refining sessions. Five videos (10 families) were embedded in the DA to highlight life after delivery. User-testing sessions were conducted with mothers and providers to assess acceptability. End-user testing was conducted with hospitalized women facing potential periviable delivery to assess acceptability and feasibility in the clinical setting. Results 108 participants engaged in sessions from July 2017-January 2020. Twenty-seven refining sessions resulted in a DA providing survival estimates, neonatal outcomes descriptions, and values clarification exercises. Five white and five black women participated in the videos; six having surviving children (ages 16 months-4 years). Twelve mothers, 16 providers, and six hospitalized women evaluated acceptability. 95.1 % found the content “just right,” 94.9 % rated the videos “good” or “excellent,” and 97.2 % believed GOALS would support families in periviable decision-making. Conclusion Our results highlight the importance of developing a DA that is acceptable for patient use with direct involvement of stakeholders.
