The clinical picture of MERS-CoV includes asymptomatic infections, mild or moderately symptomatic cases and fatal disease. Transmissions of MERS-CoV within healthcare settings are facilitated by overcrowding, poor compliance with basic infection control measures, unrecognized infections, the superspreaders phenomenon and poor triage systems. The actual contributing factors to the spread of MERS-CoV are yet to be systematically studied, but data to date suggest viral, host and environmental factors play a major role. Here, we summarize the known factors for the diverse transmission of MERS-CoV.Item EET Senior Design Project - IMS Dynamic Display(2019-05-05) Elkins, Michael; Boggess, John; Weissbach, Robert; Lin, William; Durkin, Robert J.The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum has a display transmission that is still actively used in IndyCar today. The museum wants to incorporate this transmission into an interactive display, so guests of all ages can see internal gears spin as well as see the transmission shift between its gears. This project includes mechanical and electrical engineering technology students working together to mount wire motors and sensors. The transmission will have a user-friendly interface allowing the guests to change gears and to turn the transmission on and off. The transmission will be driven by a 24V DC motor and uses a 24V DC linear actuator to rotate a barrel cam to change the position of the forks, allowing the gears to get shifted up and down. A metal enclosure houses the electrical components that provide power and control to the system. The outcome of this project is a failsafe and robust system that will operate within the IMS Museum while being continually updated.Item Genotype-specific Concordance of Chlamydia trachomatis Genital Infection within Heterosexual Partnerships(Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins, 2016-12) Schillinger, Julia A.; Katz, Barry P.; Markowitz, Lauri E.; Braslins, Phillip G.; Shrier, Lydia A.; Madico, Guillermo; Van Der Pol, Barbara; Orr, Donald P.; Rice, Peter A.; Batteiger, Byron E.; Biostatistics, School of Public HealthBackground Sexual transmission rates of Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct) cannot be measured directly; however, the study of concordance of Ct infection in sexual partnerships (dyads) can help to illuminate factors influencing Ct transmission. Methods Heterosexual men and women with Ct infection and their sex partners were enrolled and partner-specific coital and behavioral data collected for the prior 30 days. Microbiological data included Ct culture, nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT), quantitative Ct polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), and ompA genotyping. We measured Ct concordance in dyads, and factors (correlates) associated with concordance. Results 121 women and 125 men formed 128 dyads. Overall, 72.9% of male partners of NAAT-positive women and 68.6% of female partners of NAAT-positive men were Ct-infected. Concordance was more common in dyads with culture-positive members (78.6% of male partners, 77% of female partners). Partners of women and men who were NAAT-positive only had lower concordance (33.3%, 46.4%, respectively). Women in concordant dyads had significantly higher median endocervical qPCR values (3,032) compared with CT-infected women in discordant dyads (1,013 IFU DNA equivalents per ml), p<0.01. Among 54 Ct-concordant dyads with ompA genotype data for both members, 96.2% had identical genotypes. Conclusions Higher organism load appears associated with concordance among women. Same-genotype chlamydial concordance was high in sexual partnerships. No behavioral factors were sufficiently discriminating to guide partner services activities. Findings may help model coitus-specific transmission probabilities.Item The middle east respiratory syndrome coronavirus respiratory infection: an emerging infection from the arabian peninsula(Elsevier, 2016) Al-Tawfiq, J. A.; Memish, Ziad A.; Medicine, School of MedicineMiddle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) was initially isolated from a patient who was admitted to a private hospital in the Western part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 2012. Subsequently, MERS-CoV resulted in many sporadic cases, multiple intrafamilial transmission, and major outbreaks in healthcare settings. Of all the cases reported within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, 38% of the cases were primary, 45% were healthcare-associated infection, and 14% were household infections. The clinical spectrum of the MERS-CoV infection ranges from asymptomatic infections, mild or moderately symptomatic cases, and severe disease requiring intensive care unit admissions and may result in death. Within healthcare settings, transmissions of MERS-CoV are facilitated by overcrowding, poor infection control measures, unrecognized infections, and superspreader phenomenon. Currently, there is no approved therapy for MERS-CoV and there are no vaccines.Item Quandary surrounding COVID19 transmission(Sciendo, 2020-12) Kalra, Amit; Chawla, Nelly; Medicine, School of MedicineItem Tuberculosis in Adolescents and Young Adults: Emerging Data on TB Transmission and Prevention among Vulnerable Young People(MDPI, 2021-08-05) Laycock, Katherine M.; Enane, Leslie A.; Steenhoff, Andrew P.; Pediatrics, School of MedicineAdolescents and young adults (AYA, ages 10–24 years) comprise a uniquely important but understudied population in global efforts to end tuberculosis (TB), the leading infectious cause of death by a single agent worldwide prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. While TB prevention and care strategies often overlook AYA by grouping them with either children or adults, AYA have particular physiologic, developmental, and social characteristics that require dedicated approaches. This review describes current evidence on the prevention and control of TB among AYA, including approaches to TB screening, dynamics of TB transmission among AYA, and management challenges within the context of unique developmental needs. Challenges are considered for vulnerable groups of AYA such as migrants and refugees; AYA experiencing homelessness, incarceration, or substance use; and AYA living with HIV. We outline areas for needed research and implementation strategies to address TB among AYA globally.
