Item Effect of Experimental Change in Children’s Sleep Duration on Television Viewing and Physical Activity(Wiley, 2016) Hart, Chantelle N.; Hawley, Nicola; Davey, Adam; Carskadon, Mary; Raynor, Hollie; Jelalian, Elissa; Owens, Judith; Considine, Robert; Wing, Rena R.; Department of Medicine, School of MedicineBackground Paediatric observational studies demonstrate associations between sleep, television viewing and potential changes in daytime activity levels. Objective(s) To determine whether experimental changes in sleep lead to changes in children's sedentary and physical activities. Methods Using a within-subject counterbalanced design, 37 children 8–11 years old completed a 3-week study. Children slept their typical amount during a baseline week and were then randomized to increase or decrease mean time in bed by 1.5 h/night for 1 week; the alternate schedule was completed the final week. Children wore actigraphs on their non-dominant wrist and completed 3-d physical activity recalls each week. Results Children reported watching more television (p < 0.001) and demonstrated lower daytime actigraph-measured activity counts per epoch (p = 0.03) when sleep was decreased (compared with increased). However, total actigraph-measured activity counts accrued throughout the entire waking period were higher when sleep was decreased (and children were awake for longer) than when it was increased (p < 0.001). Conclusion(s) Short sleep during childhood may lead to increased television viewing and decreased mean activity levels. Although additional time awake may help to counteract negative effects of short sleep, increases in reported sedentary activities could contribute to weight gain over time.Item Screen Exposure and BMI Status in 2-11 Year Old Children(Sage, 2014-06) Hendrix, Kristin S.; Carroll, Aaron E.; Downs, Stephen M.; Department of Pediatrics, IU School of MedicineObjective. To measure the relationship between screen exposure and obesity in a large, urban sample of children and to examine whether the relationship is moderated by sociodemographics. Methods. We asked parents of 11 141 children visiting general pediatrics clinics if the child had a television (TV) in the bedroom and/or watched more than 2 hours of TV/computer daily. We measured children’s height and weight, then used logistic regression to determine whether screen exposure indicators predicted obesity (body mass index ≥85th percentile) and interacted with race/ethnicity, sex, age, and health care payer. Results. Having a TV in the bedroom predicted obesity risk (P = .01); however, watching TV/computer for more than 2 hours a day did not (P = 0.54). There were no interactions. Conclusions. Asking whether a child has a TV in the bedroom may be more important than asking about duration of screen exposure to predict risk for obesity.Item Women-Loving-Women Portrayals in Fiction, a Critical Literature Review(2019-06) Walker, La Shea; Hensel, Devon J.; Foote, Carrie E.; Latham-Mintus, KenzieThis critical literature review explores the ways in which scholars have discussed depictions of fictional women-loving women (WLW) in film and on television in the past five years. This study is guided by both sexual script theory and the intersectional perspective. Prior studies of WLW in fiction have largely focused on the areas of homonormativity, race, bisexual-erasure, WLW stereotypes, gender dynamics, WLW communities, and post-modern representation. Earlier research has focused on those areas to the exclusion of giving more attention to exploring the use of queerbaiting in modern storytelling. Future research should include analyses of more recently featured fictional WLW characters and WLW relationships in film and on television in addition to more research on queerbaiting overall.
