Ioana; Rose, Rebecca S.; Pediatrics, School of MedicineDespite the improving understanding of how lung mechanics and tidal volume requirements evolve during the evolution of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), clinical management continues to be heterogeneous and inconsistent at many institutions. Recent reports have examined the use of high tidal-volume low respiratory rate strategies in these patients once disease has been well established to help facilitate their eventual extubation and improve their long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes. In this retrospective observational research study, we describe how intentional adjustment of ventilator settings based on patient lung mechanics by an interdisciplinary BPD team improved the care of the at-risk population of infants, reduced the need for tracheostomies, as well as length of stay over a period of over 3 years. The team aimed to establish consistency in the management of these children using a high tidal volume, low-rate approach, and titrating PEEP to address the autoPEEP and bronchomalacia that is frequently observed in this patient population.Item ‘Help, I need somebody!’: Exploring who founds new nonprofits(2021-11-23) Andersson, Fredrik; Walk, MarleneRecent research suggest that the founding of a new nonprofit is seldom an activity done in solitude, rather, new nonprofits emerge from the efforts and contributions of multiple individuals working together as a team. Yet, to date we know very little about these collective efforts to start new nonprofits, especially during the earliest, nascent, stage of the founding process. This research note draws on survey data from 69 early-stage nonprofit founders to examine how many individuals are involved during the nascent stage of founding, who these individuals are, how they are related, and to illustrate how they contribute to the founding process.Item What are the odds? A preliminary test of a theoretical model of sports team effectiveness(2018-04-01) Wolfarth, Jacob Dale; Devine, DennisThis study served as a preliminary test of the Sports Team Effectiveness (STE) Model developed by Devine, Lindsey, and Wolfarth in 2017. The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which several variables help explain winning in professional basketball. The value of the STE model in predicting the winner of basketball games was compared to already-existing predictors of winning. Archival data from 435 games from the 2016-2017 season of the National Basketball Association (NBA) were examined. Bivariate correlations between each antecedent of team effectiveness and team effectiveness were computed. Secondly, multiple logistic regression was used to examine the extent to which the antecedents predict winning while controlling for the other antecedents. Finally, hierarchical logistic regression was used to examine the extent to which the STE model can predict the winner of the game above and beyond game location and opposition quality. The variables of game location, opposition quality, role performance, and number of contested shots taken by the opposing team were significantly related to winning. Overall, the STE model did significantly reduce model error above and beyond game location and opposition quality, giving empirical support to the theoretical model.
