Item Compassion Fatigue in Staff at LGBTQ+ Substance Use Recovery Center(2023-05-01) Nickel, Allison; Van Antwerp, Leah; Department of Occupational Therapy, School of Health and Human Sciences; Connaughty, ToddIndividuals working in recovery from substance use disorders (SUD) have a high risk for developing compassion fatigue (CF) due to high job demands and frequent exposure to client trauma. Pride Institute, an LGBTQ+ SUD recovery facility reported to have a high level of compassion fatigue. This was further explored with a screening measure, the Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL 5), to measure levels of compassion satisfaction (CS), secondary traumatic stress (STS), and burnout in staff. Between the surveys, staff received educational resources and had the opportunity to participate in a weekly group session to practice coping strategies. The ProQOL 5 was used as an outcome measure for intervention effectiveness, along with qualitative questions about perceived helpfulness and meaningfulness of the project. A significant decrease in STS occurred between the initial and final surveys (p = .02). Findings were inconclusive on whether the improvement was due to education and weekly groups due to their being a significantly lower level of STS in non-participants compared to participants (p = .05). However, the qualitative survey responses demonstrate promise towards their effectiveness, and the higher participant level of STS may be due to interventions reaching the staff members most in need. Further research is warranted to determine best practice for long-term programs toward CF resiliency.Item Organizational justice and secondary traumatic stress among child welfare workers: The moderated mediation model(Psychological Trauma: Theory, Research, Practice, and Policy (American Psychological Association), 2023-10-25) Kim, Jangmin; Choi, Mijin; Pierce, BarbaraObjective: Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS) is documented as a common occupational hazard among child welfare workers. We examined the moderated mediation effects of distributive, procedural, and interpersonal justice on child welfare workers’ STS. Method: We analyzed survey data collected from 1053 child welfare workers in a Midwestern state in 2018. Participants were asked to rate their STS and perceived organizational justice using valid scales. Hypotheses were tested using multiple regression and the PROCESS macro. Results: Distributive justice was a stronger factor associated with STS. The direct effect of procedural justice was not significant. However, it was associated indirectly with STS through distributive justice. Interpersonal justice was associated directly with STS. Furthermore, it moderated the association between distributive justice and STS. Conclusion: Findings suggest that the different types of organizational justice have different functions in reducing child welfare workers’ STS. This study can contribute to developing justice-oriented and trauma-informed organizations that prevent child welfare workers’ STS and reduce its negative effects on themselves, organizations, and children in the child welfare system.Item Secondary Traumatic Stress and Public Child Welfare Workers’ Intention to Remain Employed in Child Welfare: The Interaction Effect of Job Functions(Routledge: Taylor and Francis Groups, 2023-09-28) Kim, Jangmin; Pierce, Barbara; Park, Tae KyungHigh exposure to Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS) is a significant risk factor for public child welfare workers’ intention to remain employed in child welfare. This study examined whether the negative effect of STS differs by workers’ job functions by analyzing survey data collected from 1,053 public child welfare workers. STS was negatively associated with workers’ intention to remain. Furthermore, The negative impact of STS was greater among ongoing case managers than among assessment case managers. We conclude that child welfare organizations should develop trauma-informed policies and organizational support targeted to different patterns of STS by job functions. Keywords: secondary traumatic stress, job retention, job functions, public child welfare system Practice Points • Child welfare organizations should tailor organizational approaches to prevent STS and mitigate its negative consequences based on the different job functions of case managers, taking into consideration their unique challenges and needs. • Child welfare organizations should offer enhanced support to ongoing case managers due to their higher susceptibility to the adverse effects of STS. • Child welfare organizations should create physically and emotionally safe working environments that allow case managers to address their STS and improve their well-being. • Child welfare organizations should provide training to supervisors and other leaders to recognize the signs of STS and support their workers in managing their stress.Item Secondary Traumatic Stress: Pervasiveness and Contributing Factors in School Personnel(2022-11) Klemme, Paige M.; Pierce, Barbara; Turman, Jack E.; Fukui, Sadaaki; Brown, James R.The study aim is to identify pervasiveness and factors leading to secondary traumatic stress (STS) in school personnel to increase awareness of the need for support and help for school personnel who are affected by STS. School personnel is defined in this study as all personnel employed by schools and includes, teachers, administrators, staff, resource officers, custodians, lunch aids, bus drivers, nurses, social workers, etc. School personnel work together to support students and ensure that they learn not only educational material, but also social and emotional skills. They also provide a sense of safety for students. School personnel are tasked with providing seven hours of daily support to their students; however, lack of supports, constant stressors, and exposure to secondhand accounts of trauma, put school personnel at risk for STS. This dissertation includes a review of STS in school personnel, theory used to inform and understand STS, a systematic review of STS in school personnel, a cross-sectional study of STS in school personnel from a Midwestern County, and integration of findings including practical implications and need for future research.
