Item Social Emotional Learning: A Multi-Tiered School Counseling Approach(2018-05-01) Black, Kasey; Badger, Rachael; Phillips, Alyse; Tidrow, Margaret; Graham, JasmineThe authors explore the importance of social and emotional learning (SEL) at the elementary school level. A review of the literature on the short term and long term benefits of SEL in schools and a description of the competencies of SEL programming: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making, is provided. The authors propose a three-tier comprehensive prevention and intervention model of SEL instruction, intervention, and progress monitoring that involves elementary school counselors, staff, parents, and community stakeholders to provide students with essential skills to be utilized throughout secondary and post-secondary education.Item Suicide Prevention for Students: A Comprehensive School Counseling Perspective(2018-03) Ravas, Brittany; Bardo, Marvin; Bennett, Carrie; Conley, Angelica; Sanders, Joel; Sightes, Hannah; Graham, JasmineWith suicide numbers drastically rising around the United States for today's youth, suicide prevention is a key component of school counseling. This article outlines the American School Counseling Association's comprehensive school counseling model regarding suicide prevention. All components are discussed including foundation, management, delivery, and accountability. Delivery components include strategies for curriculum, individual counseling, responsive services, referrals, consultation, and collaboration.
