    Knowledge of current exercise guidelines and perceived utilization in rural Indiana

    Purpose: The aim of this research is to determine the understanding of current exercise guidelines in rural Indiana. A comparison of current exercise practices, barriers, and benefits of exercise were also briefly addressed. Methods: A survey was distributed to individuals (ages 18+) at a small family medicine clinic in a midwestern state (n=23). Findings: The sample size was 23, which comprised of mostly older females. Most participants responded that they do less than the recommended duration and intensity of exercise (Table 1). CDC recommendations were not well understood by 68% of participants. Conclusions: Results demonstrated that participants in rural Indiana underestimated the current CDC guidelines for exercise. They also fail to meet the CDC recommendations, as well as what they perceived the recommendations to be. Lack of motivation, energy and time were the most cited barriers. Increased energy and increased physical abilities were the most cited benefits.

    Last Mile: COVID-19, Telehealth, and Broadband Disparities in Rural Indiana

    This critical review of literature evaluates the impact of COVID-19 on health and mental health care delivery in rural Indiana, specifically the move to increased telehealth services. Telehealth has been a mostly positive experience for patients and providers. However, many Indiana residents are without the option of telehealth due to underdeveloped infrastructure that is necessary to support broadband access. This disparity is evidence of a larger social and health justice issue and illuminates a call to action for social workers on all levels to collaborate with community members, government agencies, and local programs to push the issue towards the public health arena and to promote broadband access as a human right.

    Substance Abuse in Indiana - An Urban-Rural Perspective

    The use of alcohol and drugs is a significant public health problem in the United States. Indiana, like many other states in the nation, is lacking in substance abuse treatment services and rural areas are particularly underserved. Rural residents may encounter additional barriers to receiving substance abuse treatment, including stigma, fear that they may know their treatment providers, a lack of access to specialized services, inferior quality of care, and having to pay more for treatment.
