Item Development of Resources to Improve Sensory Regulation in the Classroom(2024-04-26) Rizzo, Hannah; Hess, Pamela; Hess, Pamela; Department of Occupational Therapy, School of Health and Human Sciences; N/A, N/AThe purpose of this doctoral capstone project was to develop and provide sensory based resources to teachers, occupational therapists, and families throughout a large Florida school district to improve student regulation. Through the needs assessment, it was discovered that the school system had a goal to decrease maladaptive behavior and suspensions. To support this goal, four resources were created; a teacher’s handbook to sensory processing and regulation, a sensory pathway that students can utilize for regulation, newsletters for families on sensory processing and activities to support development, and a list of equipment to purchase to support the creation of a sensory library. Trainings were provided to teachers on how to utilize the handbook created.Item Epigenetic Regulation of Viral Biological Processes(MDPI, 2017-11-17) Balakrishnan, Lata; Milavetz, Barry; Biology, School of ScienceIt is increasingly clear that DNA viruses exploit cellular epigenetic processes to control their life cycles during infection. This review will address epigenetic regulation in members of the polyomaviruses, adenoviruses, human papillomaviruses, hepatitis B, and herpes viruses. For each type of virus, what is known about the roles of DNA methylation, histone modifications, nucleosome positioning, and regulatory RNA in epigenetic regulation of the virus infection will be discussed. The mechanisms used by certain viruses to dysregulate the host cell through manipulation of epigenetic processes and the role of cellular cofactors such as BRD4 that are known to be involved in epigenetic regulation of host cell pathways will also be covered. Specifically, this review will focus on the role of epigenetic regulation in maintaining viral episomes through the generation of chromatin, temporally controlling transcription from viral genes during the course of an infection, regulating latency and the switch to a lytic infection, and global dysregulation of cellular function.Item Ethical conflicts in translational genetic research: lessons learned from the eMERGE-III experience(Nature Publishing Group, 2020-06-18) Halverson, Colin M. E.; Bland, Sarah T.; Leppig, Kathleen A.; Marasa, Maddalena; Myers, Melanie; Rasouly, Hila Milo; Wynn, Julia; Clayton, Ellen Wright; Medicine, School of MedicinePurpose The Electronic Medical Records and Genomics (eMERGE) Consortium integrated biorepository-based research with electronic health records (EHR) to return results from large-scale genetic tests to participants and uploaded those data into the EHR. This article explores the ethical issues investigators encountered in that process. Methods We conducted in-depth, semistructured interviews with study personnel of the eMERGE-III Consortium sites that returned results. Results We discuss major ethical issues that arose while attempting to return research results from the eMERGE Consortium to individual participants. These included difficulties recontacting those participants who had not explicitly consented to such and disclosing results to many participants with insufficient infrastructure and staff. Investigators reported being driven by a supererogatory clinical impulse. Conclusion All these issues ultimately derive from ethical conflicts inherent to translational work being done at the interface of research and clinical care. A critical rethinking of this divide is important, but infrastructural support for such work is necessary for an ethically sound rollout of large-scale genetic testing.Item Interplay between posttranscriptional and posttranslational interactions of RNA-binding proteins(2011-06) Mittal, Nitish; Scherrer, Tanja; Gerber, André P.; Janga, Sarath ChandraRNA-binding proteins (RBPs) play important roles in the posttranscriptional control of gene expression. However, our understanding of how RBPs interact with each other at different regulatory levels to coordinate the RNA metabolism of the cell is rather limited. Here, we construct the posttranscriptional regulatory network among 69 experimentally studied RBPs in yeast to show that more than one-third of the RBPs autoregulate their expression at the posttranscriptional level and demonstrate that autoregulatory RBPs show reduced protein noise with a tendency to encode for hubs in this network. We note that in- and outdegrees in the posttranscriptional RBP–RBP regulatory network exhibit gaussian and scale-free distributions, respectively. This network was also densely interconnected with extensive cross-talk between RBPs belonging to different posttranscriptional steps, regulating varying numbers of cellular RNA targets. We show that feed-forward loops and superposed feed-forward/feedback loops are the most significant three-node subgraphs in this network. Analysis of the corresponding protein–protein interaction (posttranslational) network revealed that it is more modular than the posttranscriptional regulatory network. There is significant overlap between the regulatory and protein–protein interaction networks, with RBPs that potentially control each other at the posttranscriptional level tending to physically interact and being part of the same ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complex. Our observations put forward a model wherein RBPs could be classified into those that can stably interact with a limited number of protein partners, forming stable RNP complexes, and others that form transient hubs, having the ability to interact with multiple RBPs forming many RNPs in the cell.Item Regulating Mobile Mental Health Apps(Wiley, 2018-03) Terry, Nicolas P.; Gunter, Tracy D.; Robert H. McKinney School of LawMobile medical apps (MMAs) are a fast‐growing category of software typically installed on personal smartphones and wearable devices. A subset of MMAs are aimed at helping consumers identify mental states and/or mental illnesses. Although this is a fledgling domain, there are already enough extant mental health MMAs both to suggest a typology and to detail some of the regulatory issues they pose. As to the former, the current generation of apps includes those that facilitate self‐assessment or self‐help, connect patients with online support groups, connect patients with therapists, or predict mental health issues. Regulatory concerns with these apps include their quality, safety, and data protection. Unfortunately, the regulatory frameworks that apply have failed to provide coherent risk‐assessment models. As a result, prudent providers will need to progress with caution when it comes to recommending apps to patients or relying on app‐generated data to guide treatment.
