Item Advancing Faculty Diversity Through Self-Directed Mentoring(2017) Dutton, Yvonne M.; Ryznar, Margaret; Shaver, LeaMentoring is widely acknowledged to be important in career success, yet may be lacking for female and minority law professors, contributing to disparities in retention and promotion of diverse faculty. This Article presents the results of a unique diversity mentoring program conducted at one law school. Mentoring is often thought of as something directed by the mentor on behalf of the protégé. Our framework inverts that model, empowering diverse faculty members to proactively cultivate their own networks of research mentors. The studied intervention consisted of modest programming on mentorship, along with supplemental travel funds to focus specifically on travel for the purpose of cultivating mentors beyond one’s own institution. Participants were responsible for setting their own mentorship goals, approaching mentors and arranging meetings, and reporting annually on their activities and progress. Both quantitative and qualitative evidence demonstrate that the program has been effective along its measurable goals in its first year. Participants report growing their networks of mentors, receiving significant advice on research and the tenure process, and being sponsored for new opportunities. The authors conclude that this type of mentoring initiative, if more broadly applied, could have a significant impact on reducing disparities in retention and promotion in the legal academy. To facilitate such replication, the Article describes both the process of designing the program and the actual operation of the program as carried out at one school. In sum, the Article offers a concrete starting point for discussions at any law school interested in advancing faculty diversity through improved mentoring.Item African American Race Is Associated With Poorer Outcomes in Heart Failure Patients(Sage, 2017-04) Wierenga, Kelly L.; Dekker, Rebecca L.; Lennie, Terry A.; Chung, Misook L.; Dracup, Kathleen; School of NursingHealth care disparities associated with African American race may influence event-free survival in patients with heart failure (HF). A secondary data analysis included 863 outpatients enrolled in a multicenter HF registry. Cox regression was used to determine whether African American race was associated with shorter HF event-free survival after controlling for covariates. The multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals [CI]) of older age (1.03, 95% CI = [1.01, 1.04]), New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class (1.73, 95% CI = [1.29, 2.31]), depressive symptoms (1.05, 95% CI = [1.02, 1.07]), and African American race (1.64, 95% CI = [1.01, 2.68]) were predictors of shorter event-free survival (all ps < .05). Comparisons showed that NYHA functional class was predictive of shorter event-free survival in Caucasians (1.81, 95% CI = [1.33, 2.46]) but not in African Americans (1.24, 95% CI = [.40, 3.81]). Methods: Data were obtained from INternational Study group of Pediatric Pancreatitis: In search for a cuRE-2 (INSPPIRE-2), the largest multi-center prospective cohort study in pediatric patients with ARP or CP. Results: Of 689 children, 365 had ARP (53%), 324 CP (47%). CP was more commonly associated with female sex, younger age at first acute pancreatitis (AP) attack, Asian race, family history of CP, lower BMI%, genetic and obstructive factors, PRSS1 mutations and pancreas divisum. CFTR mutations, toxic-metabolic factors, medication use, hypertriglyceridemia, Crohn disease were more common in children with ARP. Constant or frequent abdominal pain, emergency room (ER) visits, hospitalizations, medical, endoscopic or surgical therapies were significantly more common in CP, episodic pain in ARP. 33.1% of children with CP had exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), 8.7% had diabetes mellitus. Compared to boys, girls were more likely to report pain impacting socialization and school, medical therapies, cholecystectomy, but no increased opioid use. There was no difference in race, ethnicity, age at first AP episode, age at CP diagnosis, duration of disease, risk factors, prevalence EPI or diabetes between boys and girls. Multivariate analysis revealed that family history of CP, constant pain, obstructive risk factors were predictors of CP. Conclusions: Children with family history of CP, constant pain or obstructive risk factors should raise suspicion for CP.Item Art, Race, Space(Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, 2013-04-05) Kryder-Reid, Elizabeth; Labode, Modupe; Holzman, Laura M.; Mullins, Paul R.Art, Race, Space is a collaborative research project that takes as its starting point E Pluribus Unum, a public art installation proposed for the Indianapolis Culture Trail by renowned artist Fred Wilson that was cancelled in 2011 due to controversy surrounding Wilson’s appropriation of a freed slave figure from the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. Art, Race, Space” goes beyond examining the visual legacies of racial bondage to explore how the public responses to sculptures, memorials, and archaeology reveal our society’s faultlines of race and inequality. Building on the ideas about race, class, visual culture, and democratic debate that emerge from the Indianapolis project, the faculty have designed a multifaceted program to advance scholarship and promote civic dialogue about these significant issues. The faculty members organized an interdisciplinary symposium in January, 2013. Supported by an IAHI grant, the symposium explored the complicated relationships between art, race, and civic space with presentations by Wilson, community representatives who supported and opposed the sculpture, and scholars from a variety of disciplines who examined historical and cultural contexts of the controversy that had revealed Indianapolis’ longstanding racial and class tensions. The dialogue was expanded with the presentation of historical and contemporary examples from other parts of the United States. In order to encourage public dialogue, the symposium provided opportunities for audience members and presenters to engage in conversations, and it deployed social media (Twitter and Facebook) to encourage broader participation. The project's goal is to further scholarship and encourage public conversation on race and materiality. To this end the faculty have created a website, a Facebook page, Twitter account, and are working on an open-access curriculum to support dialogue in schools and informal learning settings about the complex issues of art, race, and representation. The faculty are also collaborating on academic publications, including selected proceedings and an article on the symposium's "hybrid discourse" that combined university and community resources, expertise, and communication practices and brought together diverse voices in constructive conversation about the challenging issues surrounding E Pluribus Unum.Item Assessment and Treatment Recommendations for Pediatric Pain: The Influence of Patient Race, Patient Gender, and Provider Pain-Related Attitudes(Elsevier, 2019) Miller, Megan M.; Williams, Amy E.; Zapolski, Tamika C. B.; Rand, Kevin L.; Hirsh, Adam T.; Psychology, School of SciencePrevious studies have documented that racial minorities and women receive poorer pain care than their demographic counterparts. Providers contribute to these disparities when their pain-related decision-making systematically varies across patient groups. Less is known about racial and gender disparities in children with pain or the extent to which providers contribute to these disparities. In a sample of 129 medical students (henceforth referred to as "providers"), Virtual Human methodology and a pain-related version of the Implicit Association Test (IAT) were used to examine the effects of patient race/gender on providers’ pain assessment/treatment decisions for pediatric chronic abdominal pain, as well as the moderating role of provider implicit pain-related race/gender attitudes. Findings indicated that providers rated Black patients as more distressed (mean difference [MD] = 2.33, P < .01, standard error [SE] = .71, 95% confidence interval [CI] = .92, 3.73) and as experiencing more pain-related interference (MD = 3.14, P < .01, SE = .76, 95% CI = 1.63, 4.64) compared to White patients. Providers were more likely to recommend opioids for Black patients than White patients (MD = 2.41, P < .01, SE = .58, 95% CI = 1.05, 3.76). Female patients were perceived to be more distressed by their pain (MD = 2.14, P < .01, SE = .79, 95% CI = .58, 3.70) than male patients, however there were no gender differences in treatment recommendations. IAT results indicated that providers held implicit attitudes that Black Americans (M = .19, standard deviation [SD] = .29) and males (M = .38, SD = .29) were more pain-tolerant than their demographic counterparts; however, these implicit attitudes did not significantly moderate their pain assessment/treatment decisions. Future studies are needed to elucidate specific paths through which the pain experience and care of children differ across racial and gender groups.Item Black Adult Patients With Acute Liver Failure Are Sicker and More Likely to Undergo Liver Transplantation Than White Patients(Wiley, 2019) Nephew, Lauren; Zia, Zahra; Ghabril, Marwan; Orman, Eric; Lammert, Craig; Chalasani, Naga; Medicine, School of MedicineRacial and ethnic differences in the presentation and outcomes of patients wait‐listed with acute liver failure (ALF) have not been explored. Adult patients with ALF wait‐listed for liver transplantation (LT) from 2002 to 2016 were investigated using the United Network for Organ Sharing database. Clinical characteristics and causative etiologies were compared between white, black, Hispanic, and Asian patients with ALF who were wait‐listed as status 1. A competing risk analysis was used to explore differences in LT and wait‐list removal rates. Kaplan‐Meier survival curves were used to explore differences in 1‐year posttransplant survival. There were 8208 patients wait‐listed with a primary diagnosis of ALF; 4501 were wait‐listed as status 1 (55.3% of whites, 64.4% of blacks, 51.6% of Hispanics, 40.7% of Asians; P < 0.001). Black patients had higher bilirubin and Model for End‐Stage Liver Disease at wait‐listing than other groups. White patients were the most likely to have acetaminophen toxicity as a causative etiology, whereas black patients were the most likely to have autoimmune liver disease. Black patients were significantly more likely to undergo LT than white patients (hazard ratio, 1.20; 95% confidence interval, 1.08‐1.30). There was no difference in wait‐list removal because of death or clinical deterioration among racial/ethnic groups. The 1‐year posttransplant survival was lowest in black patients (79.6%) versus white (82.8%), Hispanic (83.9%), and Asian (89.3%) patients (P = 0.02). In conclusion, etiologies of ALF vary by race and ethnicity. Black patients with ALF were more likely to be wait‐listed as status 1 and undergo LT than white patients, but they were sicker at presentation. The Insomnia Severity Index is a commonly used tool for quantifying sleep problems in clinical and research settings, but psychometric properties in menopausal women have not been reported. Our study aim was to examine the factor structure of the Insomnia Severity Index in a large and diverse sample of midlife women with hot flashes. Methods: Baseline data were from 899 women enrolled in one of the three clinical trials using similar entry criteria conducted by the Menopause Strategies Finding Lasting Answers to Symptoms and Health (MsFLASH) research network. We conducted confirmatory factor analyses for the total sample and within strata defined by race/ethnicity (Black and White women). Results: The Insomnia Severity Index had two factors in the total sample. The 2-factor structure was consistent across Black and White women, with the exception of one item “Difficulty falling asleep”. Conclusions: The Insomnia Severity Index in midlife women with hot flashes is composed of two factors that capture dimensions of the insomnia severity and daytime impact. The instrument is a psychometrically sound scale appropriate for use in research and clinical practice to capture the severity and daytime impact of insomnia symptoms in diverse samples of midlife women with hot flashes. An abbreviated screening of two items could be considered to determine if further evaluation is needed of sleep complaints.Item Connecting With Students Through a Critical, Participatory Curriculum: An Exploration Into a High School History Teacher’s Construction of Teacher–Student Relationships(SAGE Publications, 2018-08-23) Zaccor, Karla M.; School of EducationStandardized testing is a top priority in schools, with conversations around teaching and learning reduced to raising student test scores. Often any other conversations about how schools should serve students are eliminated or pushed to the periphery. The central questions raised here are the following: how are student–teacher relationships constructed in the classroom and how important are those relationships to those students and teachers? My focal teacher enacted a curriculum that was critical and relevant to students’ lives. He considered the curriculum as his primary way of building relationships with students.Item Decolonization and liberation psychology: The case of psychology in South Africa(Cambridge UP, 2020) de la Rey, Cheryl; Thompson, Chalmer E.This chapter focuses on psychology in South Africa as a discipline and profession embedded in a history of colonialism and apartheid. It a describes South African psychology as a site of epistemological contestation shaped by historical racial identities and relations of power and asserts that liberation psychology is central to the contribution of the profession to eliminating human rights violations and fostering well-being. National student protests in 2015–2016 called for the “decolonization” of the curriculum, bringing into sharp focus the decades-long debate about the relevance of psychology and the need for transformation. While the focus is psychology in South Africa, the chapter broadens the discussion of decolonizing the field to other nations plagued by histories of racial oppression such as Australia and the United States. Changes in the decolonizing process are not without their challenges, yet in a field of study that is one of the most popular among students, a cogent move toward decolonizing the psychology curriculum entails the invention of new voices and theories as well as liberation psychology practices that center squarely on the needs for equity, violence prevention, and social justice.
