Item The IUSM Scholarly Concentrations Program: Strategic Collaborative Education Across Schools and Departments(2020-03-06) Birnbaum, Deborah R.; Rojas, Michelle; Corson-Knowles, Daniel; Wallach, Paul M.A changing healthcare landscape calls for innovation and expansion of expertise in medical education. How does a medical school better prepare medical students to thrive in a changing profession? Through its Scholarly Concentrations Program, Indiana University School of Medicine is collaborating with non-physician experts from schools with expertise in topics that are medically relevant and of interest to medical students. Scholarly Concentrations are longitudinal experiences that enhance the medical education program through coursework and scholarly work. In addition to enhancing students’ education, it offers the opportunity to enhance campus reputation and develop research focus for students and faculty. Partnerships were created in both directions. IU School of Medicine sought out schools and departments with unique expertise on different medical campuses. Schools and departments also approached IU School of Medicine about its Scholarly Concentrations program as momentum built. These partnerships are creating mutual benefits for IUSM, partners, faculty and students. Benefits for partner organizations include mentoring opportunities, reputational enhancement, having an impact on healthcare system, and pathways to certificates and advanced degrees. For IUSM and its students, the partnerships enhance professional development through Scholarly Concentrations in areas of clinical, teaching, research, advocacy and administration.Item Leadership as Advocacy: Transformational Leadership in Action(Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, 2010-04-09) McGuire, Lisa; Murphy-Nugen, Amy; George, Kathy; Howes, PatThis poster presents findings from a case study of a partnership between the IU School of Social Work and the Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS), focusing on leadership as a form of administrative advocacy. Key findings from key informant interviews and focus groups will demonstrate how current and former MSW students have utilized transformational leadership in their administrative positions at DCS as the agency seeks to reform itself to achieve safety, permanence and well-being for Indiana children and families.Item Social Work and Law: The Educational Benefits of Collaboration(Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, 2013-04-05) Boys, Stephanie K.; Hagan, Carrie A.Low income clients seeking civil legal services are rarely in need of only legal assistance. Instead, the issues that drove them to seek an attorney typically overlap into multiple mental health and social service needs. The poster will explain how a newly piloted clinical partnership between the School of Social Work and the School of Law improved the educational outcomes of students, and also enhanced the services offered to clients. The clinic historically served the legal needs of low income clients in Indianapolis. In 2012, an interdisciplinary collaboration involving law and social work students and faculty from both fields was implemented in order to provide holistic services to clients. The poster will describe the model, including how the clinic is structured and the roles for students and faculty. Preliminary data on the educational benefits for both law and social work students will be provided. The clinic has been found to address both student learning needs and the needs of clients in the local community.Item The Story of Medicine: From Paternalism to Partnership(2013-01-09) Marks, Jennifer Lynn; Parrish-Sprowl, John; Sheeler, Kristina K. Horn; Karnick, Kristine Brunovska, 1958-Physicians were interviewed and asked about their perspectives on communicating with patients, media, and the ways in which the biomedical and biopsychosocial models function in the practice of medicine. Fisher’s Narrative Paradigm was the primary critical method applied to themes that emerged from the interviews. Those emergent themes included the importance of a team approach to patient care; perspectives on physicians as bad communicators; and successful communication strategies when talking to patients. Physicians rely on nurses and other support staff, but the most important partnership is that between the physician and patient. Narrative fidelity and probability are satisfied by strategies physicians use in communicating with patients: using understandable language when talking to patients; engaging in nonverbal tactics of sitting down with patients, making eye contact with patients, and making appropriate physical contact with them in the form of a handshake or a light touch on the arm. Physicians are frustrated by media’s reporting of preliminary study results that omit details as well as media’s fostering of expectations for quick diagnostic processes and magical cures within the public. Furthermore, physicians see the biomedical and biopsychosocial models becoming increasingly interdependent in the practice of medicine, which carries the story of contemporary medicine further into the realm of partnership, revealing its humanity as well as its fading paternalism.
