At the same time, it is becoming ever more important to ensure inclusion of diverse perspectives in design research. Several strategies currently exist for successfully recruiting and engaging older adults in design. However, there is still much to learn about how to effectively engage older adults in the design process. In this position paper, we reflect on our experiences engaging older adults in participatory design of "smart" tools for health information search. We share our study design, including our recruitment process and procedures. We then discuss the strategies we used in the design process and challenges we encountered when designing and implementing our research protocol. We contribute our experiences in an effort to facilitate discussion of strategies and opportunities for including older adults in design research.Item Using participatory design research to help students propose and design new applications(2013 AIGA National Conference, 2013-10-10) Ganci, AaronGreat apps allow people to express themselves, improve their productivity, or connect them to loved ones. They solve problems that are at the core of human life. As we educate students about designing new digital experiences, we also have to instill in them the ability to investigate and identify tools that will truly impact people’s lives. Electives in web design can be a great way to introduce a design methodology to a wide variety of students. The use of simple participatory design methods can introduce methodological thinking to students to help them understand potential users’ real problems. In this paper, a case study will be shared about the use of participatory research methods within the context of digital design elective coursework. Examples of objectives and deliverables will be shared about the integration of these methods into course projects. From this paper, design educators can take away the ability to integrate participatory design learning outcomes into traditional web and application design projects. In addition, by using the documented approach, educators can provide their students with the ability to conceptualize realistic, useful, and potentially patentable new products in the context of their course.Item A web-based software tool for participatory optimization of conservation practices in watersheds(Elsevier, 2015-07) Babbar-Sebens, Meghna; Mukhopadhyay, Snehasis; Singh, Vidya Bhushan; Piemonti, Adriana Debora; Department of Computer & Information Science, School of ScienceWRESTORE (Watershed Restoration Using Spatio-Temporal Optimization of Resources) is a web-based, participatory planning tool that can be used to engage with watershed stakeholder communities, and involve them in using science-based, human-guided, interactive simulation–optimization methods for designing potential conservation practices on their landscape. The underlying optimization algorithms, process simulation models, and interfaces allow users to not only spatially optimize the locations and types of new conservation practices based on quantifiable goals estimated by the dynamic simulation models, but also to include their personal subjective and/or unquantifiable criteria in the location and design of these practices. In this paper, we describe the software, interfaces, and architecture of WRESTORE, provide scenarios for implementing the WRESTORE tool in a watershed community's planning process, and discuss considerations for future developments.
