Building a community of practice: Situating data management in the transition to electronic lab notebooks
(2019-05) Coates, Heather L.; Foster, Erin D.; Whipple, Elizabeth C.
This poster will describe an information management initiative sponsored by the School of Medicine Research Administration. The 4-month pilot involved the rollout of an electronic lab notebook (ELN) system alongside tailored support for developing operational data management plans. Administrative drivers included improving lab efficiency and reducing institutional liability. The pilot primarily focused on the benefits of ELN use and formalizing data management practices. A key goal was to improve the collection of and access to experimental information and improve information management workflows. Integrating data management plan support as part of the ELN pilot contextualizes how the ELN fits into, and can potentially improve, existing lab workflows and highlights the unique information management needs of each research lab.

Creating a new “reality” for medical education: the Nexus Reality Lab for virtual reality
(2019-10-01) Lilly, Jason; Kaneshiro, Kellie N.; Misquith, Chelsea; Dennett, Brandon
Background: The Technology Team at the Ruth Lilly Medical Library, Indiana University (IU), first started exploring virtual reality (VR) in 2016. In 2017, we began offering weekly sessions dubbed VRidays (“VR Fridays”) to give students an opportunity to experience the technology. We also purchased a portable VR setup that allowed us to demonstrate VR at our regional campuses. Description: To lower the entry barrier to VR, the Technology Team collaborated with the IU Advanced Visualization Lab to establish a reality lab in our collaborative learning space. The lab opened in the fall of 2018 and consists of four high-end VR stations that are accessible to students at any time, but they can also make an appointment for a more guided experience. Information and instructions are available on a LibGuide. Conclusion: We are currently collecting data on the number of unique users and evaluating application usage. We are working on a feedback mechanism and looking to develop collaborative partnerships across the university.

Negotiation Strategies to Empower You in Libraries and Life: A Hands-On Workshop
    (2022-05-04) Macy, Katharine V.
Librarians negotiate salaries, workloads, vendor contracts, pricing, authorship, and more, yet few have opportunities to learn effective negotiation strategies. If you negotiate as part of your job or are interested in improving your skills in personal negotiation, you won’t want to miss this rare opportunity to learn negotiation skills from an expert and experienced trainer. In this highly interactive session, Katharine Macy, MBA, MLIS, will introduce you to best practices in negotiation strategies and guide you in practicing your new skills in library-based case study role-plays. You’ll become familiar with terminology and concepts used by negotiators in preparing for negotiations, and tactics to employ during negotiations. By the end of the session, you’ll have skills you can use to better advocate for your institution and yourself.

Providing medical information to college health center personnel: A circuit librarian service at the University of Illinois
    (2003) Stumpff, Julia C.
College health center personnel are no different from other health practitioners in their need for medical information. To help meet this need, the McKinley Health Center at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign developed a partnership in 1997 with the Library of the Health Sciences–Urbana, a regional site library of the University of Illinois at Chicago campus. This partnership led to the adoption of circuit librarianship, a dynamic outreach model, to enhance access to health information for McKinley Health Center personnel. A circuit librarian consults with health center personnel during regularly scheduled on-site visits to the health center and its satellite office. Upon returning to the resource library, she conducts research for clinical information on their behalf. Articles, books, and relevant Web sites, are identified and delivered to assist in answering questions regarding topics such as disease management, drug therapy, wellness, and health administration.
