Item Electrochemical Model-Based Condition Monitoring via Experimentally Identified Li-Ion Battery Model and HPPC(MDPI, 2017-08-25) Rahman, Md Ashiqur; Anwar, Sohel; Izadian, Afshin; Mechanical Engineering, School of Engineering and TechnologyElectrochemical model-based condition monitoring of a Li-Ion battery using an experimentally identified battery model and Hybrid Pulse Power Characterization (HPPC) cycle is presented in this paper. LiCoO2 cathode chemistry was chosen in this work due to its higher energy storage capabilities. Battery electrochemical model parameters are subject to change under severe or abusive operating conditions resulting in, for example, Navy over-discharged battery, 24 h over-discharged battery, and overcharged battery. Stated battery fault conditions can cause significant variations in a number of electrochemical battery model parameters from nominal values, and can be considered as separate models. Output error injection based partial differential algebraic equation (PDAE) observers have been used to generate the residual voltage signals in order to identify these abusive conditions. These residuals are then used in a Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation (MMAE) algorithm to detect the ongoing fault conditions of the battery. HPPC cycle simulated load profile based analysis shows that the proposed algorithm can detect and identify the stated fault conditions accurately using measured input current and terminal output voltage. The proposed model-based fault diagnosis can potentially improve the condition monitoring performance of a battery management system.Item A practical phosphorus-based anode material for high-energy lithium-ion batteries(Elsevier, 2020-08) Amine, Rachid; Daali, Amine; Zhou, Xinwei; Liu, Xiang; Liu, Yuzi; Ren, Yang; Zhang, Xiaoyi; Zhu, Likun; Al-Hallaj, Said; Chen, Zonghai; Xu, Gui-Liang; Amine, Khalil; Mechanical and Energy Engineering, School of Engineering and TechnologyState-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries cannot satisfy the increasing energy demand worldwide because of the low specific capacity of the graphite anode. Silicon and phosphorus both show much higher specific capacity; however, their practical use is significantly hindered by their large volume changes during charge/discharge. Although significant efforts have been made to improve their cycle life, the initial coulombic efficiencies of the reported Si-based and P-based anodes are still unsatisfactory (<90%). Here, by using a scalable high-energy ball milling approach, we report a practical hierarchical micro/nanostructured P-based anode material for high-energy lithium-ion batteries, which possesses a high initial coulombic efficiency of 91% and high specific capacity of ~2500 mAh g−1 together with long cycle life and fast charging capability. In situ high-energy X-ray diffraction and in situ single-particle charging/discharging were used to understand its superior lithium storage performance. Moreover, proof-of-concept full-cell lithium-ion batteries using such an anode and a LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 cathode were assembled to show their practical use. The findings presented here can serve as a good guideline for the future design of high-performance anode materials for lithium-ion batteries.Item Structural and Electrochemical Properties of the High Ni Content Spinel LiNiMnO4(MDPI, 2021) Li, Tianyi; Chang, Kai; Hashem, Ahmed M.; Abdel-Ghany, Ashraf E.; El-Tawil, Rasha S.; Wang, Hua; El-Mounayri, Hazim; Tovar, Andres; Zhu, Likun; Julien, Christian M.; Mechanical and Energy Engineering, School of Engineering and TechnologyThis work presents a contribution to the study of a new Ni-rich spinel cathode material, LiNiMnO4, for Li-ion batteries operating in the 5-V region. The LiNiMnO4 compound was synthesized by a sol-gel method assisted by ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) as a chelator. Structural analyses carried out by Rietveld refinements and Raman spectroscopy, selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and X-ray photoelectron (XPS) spectroscopy reveal that the product is a composite (LNM@NMO), including non-stoichiometric LiNiMnO4-δ spinel and a secondary Ni6MnO8 cubic phase. Cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge profiles show similar features to those of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 bare. A comparison of the electrochemical performances of 4-V spinel LiMn2O4 and 5-V spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 with those of LNM@NMO composite demonstrates the long-term cycling stability of this new Ni-rich spinel cathode. Due to the presence of the secondary phase, the LNM@NMO electrode exhibits an initial specific capacity as low as 57 mAh g−1 but shows an excellent electrochemical stability at 1C rate for 1000 cycles with a capacity decay of 2.7 × 10−3 mAh g−1 per cycle.Item Synthesis of V2O5/Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Integrated into Nanostructured Composites as Cathode Materials in High Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries(MDPI, 2022) Aliahmad, Nojan; Biswas, Pias Kumar; Dalir, Hamid; Agarwal, Mangilal; Mechanical and Energy Engineering, School of Engineering and TechnologyVanadium pentoxide (V2O5)-anchored single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) composites have been developed through a simple sol–gel process, followed by hydrothermal treatment. The resulting material is suitable for use in flexible ultra-high capacity electrode applications for lithium-ion batteries. The unique combination of V2O5 with 0.2 wt.% of SWCNT offers a highly conductive three-dimensional network. This ultimately alleviates the low lithium-ion intercalation seen in V2O5 itself and facilitates vanadium redox reactions. The integration of SWCNTs into the layered structure of V2O5 leads to a high specific capacity of 390 mAhg−1 at 0.1 C between 1.8 to 3.8 V, which is close to the theoretical capacity of V2O5 (443 mAhg−1). In recent research, most of the V2O5 with carbonaceous materials shows higher specific capacity but limited cyclability and poor rate capability. In this work, good cyclability with only 0.3% per cycle degradation during 200 cycles and enhanced rate capability of 178 mAhg−1 at 10 C have been achieved. The excellent electrochemical kinetics during lithiation/delithiation is attributed to the chemical interaction of SWCNTs entrapped between layers of the V2O5 nanostructured network. Proper dispersion of SWCNTs into the V2O5 structure, and its resulting effects, have been validated by SEM, TEM, XPS, XRD, and electrical resistivity measurements. This innovative hybrid material offers a new direction for the large-scale production of high-performance cathode materials for advanced flexible and structural battery applications.
