Item Are Black, Male Leaders Expected to Help Other Black Americans in the Workplace?(2024-08) Yan, Sisley; Williams, Jane; Ashburn-Nardo, Leslie; Derricks, VeronicaExperimental vignette methodology was utilized to investigate the relationships between leader group prototypicality, identity denial, and three leader outcomes (i.e., charisma, trust, and endorsement). Participants were randomly assigned to one of three experimental conditions: general advocacy (control), ingroup advocacy, and ingroup anti-advocacy. We hypothesized that a Black, male target displaying ingroup advocacy behaviors would be perceived most favorably while a Black, male target displaying ingroup anti-advocacy behaviors would be perceived most poorly. Furthermore, we predicted that identity denial, measured via perceived racial identification, would serve as a mediator. Overall, we found support for our hypotheses, with the exception being that there were no significant differences in leader outcome ratings when comparing the general advocacy condition to the ingroup advocacy condition, even despite the significant mediation throughout all conditions. In summary, Black Americans on average do not expect a Black, male leader to help other Black employees, but he is expected to not devalue or trivialize his Black identity. Doing so would lead to identity denial and less positive evaluations. In contrast, standing in solidarity with the ingroup increases the leader’s perceived racial identification the most and this in turn helps to bolster leader outcomes. Although future research should test climate change as a valid control condition, our pattern of findings suggests that environmental sustainability should be a safe topic for a Black, male leader to advocate for if he wishes to remain more neutral on matters pertaining to race.Item Developing Core Leadership Competencies for the Library Profession.(Library Leadership & Management is available online at: [LINK]http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/llama/publications/llandm/libraryleadership.cfm[/LINK]. The success of libraries as organizations is determined by the actions of the individuals who work in those libraries; the success of those individuals in carrying out the missions of those libraries is in large measure a reflection of the type and quality of leadership. Successful library leaders demonstrate certain skills that are instrumental in the delivery of desired outcomes. Furthermore, this journey was presented using the special issue focus on leadership. Presented experiences occurred within the typical faculty understanding of teaching, research, and service. Recognition was given to the university and campus that hosts this department as it related to the overall diversity and inclusion culture developed on the broader scale, as this is important to acknowledge. Key findings from key informant interviews and focus groups will demonstrate how current and former MSW students have utilized transformational leadership in their administrative positions at DCS as the agency seeks to reform itself to achieve safety, permanence and well-being for Indiana children and families.Item Leadership Characteristics of Nurse Managers Associated with Implementation of Evidence-Based Practice(2021-12) Noth-Matchett, Amanda Ann; Newhouse, Robin; Von Ah, Diane; Ellis, Rebecca Bartlett; Menachemi, NirThe implementation of evidence into practice is a complex process. Estimates indicate that it takes seventeen years on average for research to be translated into practice. Delay in implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP) results in poor patient outcomes and negative impacts to healthcare systems. While many factors contribute to delayed implementation of evidence, organizational characteristics of healthcare institutions have a significant impact on implementation. Leaders play a critical role by influencing these organizational characteristics to support evidence-based practice implementation. A key leadership role within acute care healthcare organizations is that of the front-line nurse manager (NM). Front-line nurse managers have responsibility for nursing unit operations and clinical nurses who deliver patient care under the nurse managers supervision. The relationship between NM leadership competencies and implementation of EBP is not well understood. Therefore, there is a critical need to identify how NM leadership behaviors influence the implementation of EBP. This dissertation examined the relationship between NM leadership behaviors and implementation of EBP. Results link the role of the NM to evidence-based clinical practice, and describe competencies and education needed for NM development. With an understanding of the NM leadership behaviors associated with implementation of EBP, healthcare leaders can develop education, processes, and interventions to increase competencies on NM leadership behaviors. Better implementation support by NMs will result in an improvement in use of EBPs. To examine the NM leadership behaviors that are associated with implementation of EBP, the following activities were completed: (1) an integrative review of the literature related to NM competencies associated with implementation, (2) identification and description of nurse manager competencies associated with EBP implementation using the Delphi method, and (3) examination of NM leadership behaviors associated with implementation of EBP during the COVID-19 pandemic response through a multi-site descriptive correlational survey of NMs and their nursing staff. Results of these studies demonstrate the importance of NM leadership characteristics and behaviors on EBP implementation.Item Leadership corner: COVID courage awardees(Elsevier, 2021-03) Carpenter, Janet S.; School of NursingItem Leading with Wellness in Mind: Lessons in Academic Leadership During a Pandemic(2021-12-15) Sotto-Santiago, Sylk; Ober, Michael; Neal, Chemen; Geraci, MarkPURPOSE: COVID-19 pandemic impact on healthcare providers has been immense, making it clear that the pandemic demands even more out of our leadership and wellness efforts. METHODS: We ground this work in the phenomenology of leadership. Our team evaluated programmatic interventions of virtual community wellness sessions. RESULTS: Ninety-eight percent of respondents strongly agreed that wellness initiatives in the department are critical. Qualitative results focus on one of the lessons learned; what it means to lead with wellness in mind. CONCLUSION: Now, more than ever, leading with wellness in mind becomes a high priority. We present its seven key domains.
