Item Fostering Interdisciplinary Boundary Spanning in Health Communication: A Call for a Paradigm Shift(Taylor & Francis, 2022) Hoffmann-Longtin, Krista; Kerr, Anna M.; Shaunfield, Sara; Koenig, Christopher J.; Bylund, Carma L.; Clayton, Margaret F.; Communication Studies, School of Liberal ArtsScholarship in the field of health communication is broad, with interdisciplinary contributions from researchers trained in a variety of fields including communication, nursing, medicine, pharmacy, public health, and social work. In this paper, we explore the role of “health communication boundary spanners” (HCBS), individuals whose scholarly work and academic appointment reflect dual citizenship in both the communication discipline and the health professions or public health. Using a process of critical reflective inquiry, we elucidate opportunities and challenges associated with HCBS across the spectrum of health communication in order to provide guidance for individuals pursuing boundary spanning roles and those who supervise and mentor them. This dual citizen role suggests that HCBS have unique skills, identities, perspectives, and practices that contribute new ways of being and knowing that transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries. The health communication field is evolving in response to the need to address significant healthcare and policy problems. No one discipline has the ability to single-handedly fix our current healthcare systems. Narrative data from this study illustrate the importance of seeing HCBS work beyond simply being informed by disciplinary knowledge. Rather, we suggest that adapting ways of knowing and definitions of expertise is an integral part of the solution to solving persistent health problems.Item Nanotechnology Research, Education, and Outreach by the Integrated Nanosystems Development Institute (INDI)(Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, 2012-04-13) Naumann, Christoph; Rizkalla, Maher; Decca, Ricardo; El-Mounayri, Hazim; Witzmann, Frank; Agarwal, MangilalAbstract: The Integrated Nanosystems Development Institute (INDI), sponsored under the IUPUI Signature Centers Initiative, with a vision of becoming a world-recognized resource for the realization of nanotechnology-based systems, is advancing both nanotechnology research and education on campus. Innovation in nanotechnology requires multidisciplinary approaches and INDI, a collective group of faculty members across departments and schools (including the School of Engineering and Technology, School of Science, School of Dentistry, and School of Medicine), enables interdisciplinary research collaborations and offers nanosystems coursework to students in science and engineering disciplines. Current research efforts span a range of critical issues in nanomaterials, nanodevices, nanosystems, energy, physics, and nanomedicine, and include projects such as the design and characterization of nanoarchitectures for biomedical applications, advancing fuel cell and energy storage technologies, and investigating nanoparticle toxicology. Several members of INDI have externally funded research and outreach projects. The nanotechnology research capabilities within INDI, including of a cluster of analytical equipment and lab resources for nanosystems development and characterization, support local industry needs as well as the research interests of over 30 faculty members and over 100 students (undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral) on the IUPUI campus. INDI also provides, through the newly developed courses, students with both theory and hands-on experiences involving the fabrication, characterization, and applications of nanosystems. These courses are also part of IUPUI’s newly developed Nanotechnology Track in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering degree programs, and the Energy Engineering degree program. In addition, INDI’s active community outreach activities, including its nanotechnology summer camps for K-12 students and teachers, provide early exposure to nanofabrication techniques and research. These classroom and lab-based experiences are designed to encourage higher education and involvement in academic research in an effort to generate the advanced workforce needed by Indiana and the nation.Item TRIP-Translating Research Into Practice(Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, 2011-04-08) Viehweg, StephanAt its core, the IUPUI TRIP initiative illustrates and fosters interdisciplinary and crossdisciplinary research targeting goals which work toward the betterment of people’s lives across communities, our state, and beyond. The faculty on the IUPUI campus are making a difference to farmers, manufacturers, the service industry, our waterways, policy makers, educators, and to the health and well-being of our citizens through their focus on translational research. Their translational research takes knowledge generated from scientific inquiry and humanistic scholarship and transforms that knowledge into practices and solutions. Translational research solves problems people face in their everyday lives by using meaningful, evidenced-based information to address complex social, health, governmental, cultural, and relational issues. This process is more than just application. Translational research intentionally targets a problem and constructs an answer based on evidence. IUPUI, through the leadership of Chancellor Bantz, recognizes that the partnership between an urban campus and its communities is best when the campus contributions to those communities are clearly evident. The IUPUI TRIP initiative proudly illustrates the contributions that our faculty make to others. Currently, we have identified more than 100 translational scholars at IUPUI.
