Item Instagram Power Users and their Effect on Social Movements(Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, 2016-04-08) Cornet, Victor P.; Hall, Natalie K.Social movements, complex systems of informal but organized relationships that pursue a shared goal of social change, have existed for decades. Since the advent of the Internet, technology and social media have increasingly played a role in social movement development. Recent research indicates that “power users” influential users with higher audience engagement are an important faction of users on social media. Power users have been identified on Facebook and Twitter, but not on Instagram. Instagram is a particularly interesting platform to study as it differs from Facebook and Twitter in that it’s imagebased, can be anonymous, and likely appeals to a different demographic of users than those who primarily use Facebook or Twitter. We hypothesize that power users will be an identifiable segment on Instagram and that they can and do play a vital role in the success of social movement mobilization. This research seeks to build on reallife social movements, social movement theory, and social media research to gain a deeper understanding of online activism and the role of the power user. Due to the prominence of images on this social network, examining the role of Instagram in social movements will likely speak to the role of emotion in social movements. This lack of such discussion is a major critique of social movement theory. This study aims to first identify and define the "power users" on Instagram posting about social movements, then to understand the attitude and behaviors of these "power users" and how it differs from average users. We will do this by identifying patterns in Instagram content about social movements, "power" and "average" user survey results. We will also examine the posts through the analysis of images, captions, number of likes and other metrics. The results will inform subsequent research about Instagram that has been scarce.Item Institute for American Thought(Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, 2011-04-08) Pfeifer, DavidThis poster will have images of recent volumes published by the critical editions being edited by the Institute for American Thought. Information will tell how long the critical editions have been in existence, how much funding has been received. The new fifth critical edition will be mentioned. We will provide information on our five scholarly critical editions. Three of them publish the works of the classical American philosophers Charles S. Peirce (1839–1914), Josiah Royce (1855– 1916), and George Santayana (1863–1952), and two others the works of the famous abolitionist Frederick Douglass (1818–1895), and the short stories of Ray Bradbury (1920–).Item STEALTH-LIKE COMMUNICATION WITHIN IMAGES(Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, 2012-04-13) Miranda, Jose H.; King, BrianEmbedded communication techniques within an image have be-come increasingly important in the area of digital communication. Such techniques include: steganography, covert channels, anonymity, and copyright marking. The focus of this research is developing a se-ries of experiments with an applied technique of steganography knowledge in order to protect the information being hidden through the image. This technique allows this stealth-like communication be confidential such that only those that possess authentication can read or interpret the data behind the image. In order for this authentication to work a user is granted a key, which allows the decoding of the data scattered around the different pixels of the image. Short-term goals of this project include setting different parameters of the location of the message such as fixed places of the data and fixed number of pixels. Long-term goals is to implement a smartphone communication sys-tem that utilizes this technique being developed in order to enhance this type of stealth-like communication.Item Visual Research Methods: Integrating Images in the Study of Social Problems(Routledge, 2019) Herzog, Patricia Snell; Lilly Family School of PhilanthropyThis chapter explains how visuals enhance the study of social problems through four examples of data collection and research dissemination. The first example studies meaning differentiation by examining photographs that represent the concept of community. The second studies social isolation via network graphs of social media connectivity. In the third example, the problem of racial segregation is critically analyzed through maps that serve as visual tools for disseminating information about this social problem. The fourth example also considers visuals in the context of data dissemination, studying how the use of data visualization (“DataViz”) to teach undergraduates about income inequality impacts their behavior.
