Item Advancing Critical Care in the ICU: A Human-Centered Biomedical Data Visualization Systems(2011) Faiola, Anthony; Newlon, ChrisThe purpose of this research is to provide medical clinicians with a new technology for interpreting large and diverse datasets to expedite critical care decision-making in the ICU. We refer to this technology as the medical information visualization assistant (MIVA). MIVA delivers multivariate biometric (bedside) data via a visualization display by transforming and organizing it into temporal resolutions that can provide contextual knowledge to clinicians. The result is a spatial organization of multiple datasets that allows rapid analysis and interpretation of trends. Findings from the usability study of the MIVA static prototype and heuristic inspection of the dynamic prototype suggest that using MIVA can yield faster and more accurate results. Furthermore, comments from the majority of the experimental group and the heuristic inspectors indicate that MIVA can facilitate clinical task flow in context-dependent health care settings.Item The Aesthetic Dimensions of U.S. and South Korean Responses to Web Home Pages: A Cross-Cultural Comparison(2011-01) Faiola, Anthony; Ho, Chin-Chang; Tarrant, Mark D.; MacDorman, Karl F.Culturally influenced preferences in website aesthetics is a topic often neglected by scholars in human-computer interaction. Kim, Lee, and Choi (2003) identified aesthetic design factors of web home pages that elicited particular responses in South Korean web users based on 13 secondary emotional dimensions. This study extends Kim et al.'s work to U.S. participants, comparing the original South Korean findings with U.S. findings. Results show that U.S. participants reliably applied translations of the emotional adjectives used in the South Korean study to the home pages. However, factor analysis revealed that the aesthetic perceptions of U.S. and South Korean participants formed different aesthetic dimensions composed of different sets of emotional adjectives, suggesting that U.S. and South Korean people perceive the aesthetics of home pages differently. These results indicate that website aesthetics can vary significantly between cultures.Item Correlating the effects of flow and telepresence in virtual worlds: Enhancing our understanding of user behavior in game-based learning(2013-05) Faiola, Anthony; Newlon, Christine; Pfaff, Mark; Smyslova, OlgaRecent research on online learning suggests that virtual worlds are becoming an important environment to observe the experience of flow. From these simulated spaces, researchers may gather a deeper understanding of cognition in the context of game-based learning. Csikszentmihalyi (1997) describes flow as a feeling of increased psychological immersion and energized focus, with outcomes that evoke disregard for external pressures and the loss of time consciousness, issuing in a sense of pleasure. Past studies suggest that flow is encountered in an array of activities and places, including those in virtual worlds. The authors’ posit that flow in virtual worlds, such as Second Life (SL), can be positively associated with degrees of the cognitive phenomenon of immersion and telepresence. Flow may also contribute to a better attitude and behavior during virtual game-based learning. This study tested three hypotheses related to flow and telepresence, using SL. Findings suggest that both flow and telepresence are experienced in SL and that there is a significant correlation between them. These findings shed light on the complex interrelationships and interactions that lead to flow experience in virtual gameplay and learning, while engendering hope that learners, who experience flow, may acquire an improved attitude of learning online.Item The Design Enterprise: Rethinking the HCI Education Paradigm(2007-06) Faiola, AnthonyItem A novel set of features for continuous hand gesture recognition(Springer, 2014) Bhuyan, M. Ajay; MacDorman, Karl F.; Iwahori, Yuji; Human-Centered Computing, School of Informatics and ComputingApplications requiring the natural use of the human hand as a human–computer interface motivate research on continuous hand gesture recognition. Gesture recognition depends on gesture segmentation to locate the starting and end points of meaningful gestures while ignoring unintentional movements. Unfortunately, gesture segmentation remains a formidable challenge because of unconstrained spatiotemporal variations in gestures and the coarticulation and movement epenthesis of successive gestures. Furthermore, errors in hand image segmentation cause the estimated hand motion trajectory to deviate from the actual one. This research moves toward addressing these problems. Our approach entails using gesture spotting to distinguish meaningful gestures from unintentional movements. To avoid the effects of variations in a gesture’s motion chain code (MCC), we propose instead to use a novel set of features: the (a) orientation and (b) length of an ellipse least-squares fitted to motion-trajectory points and (c) the position of the hand. The features are designed to support classification using conditional random fields. To evaluate the performance of the system, 10 participants signed 10 gestures several times each, providing a total of 75 instances per gesture. To train the system, 50 instances of each gesture served as training data and 25 as testing data. For isolated gestures, the recognition rate using the MCC as a feature vector was only 69.6 % but rose to 96.0 % using the proposed features, a 26.1 % improvement. For continuous gestures, the recognition rate for the proposed features was 88.9 %. These results show the efficacy of the proposed method.Item Redesign of a computerized clinical reminder for colorectal cancer screening: a human-computer interaction evaluation(2011-11) Saleem, Jason J.; Haggstrom, David A.; Militello, Laura G.; Flanagan, Mindy; Kiess, Chris L.; Arbuckle, Nicole; Doebbeling, Bradley N.Background Based on barriers to the use of computerized clinical decision support (CDS) learned in an earlier field study, we prototyped design enhancements to the Veterans Health Administration's (VHA's) colorectal cancer (CRC) screening clinical reminder to compare against the VHA's current CRC reminder. Methods In a controlled simulation experiment, 12 primary care providers (PCPs) used prototypes of the current and redesigned CRC screening reminder in a within-subject comparison. Quantitative measurements were based on a usability survey, workload assessment instrument, and workflow integration survey. We also collected qualitative data on both designs. Results Design enhancements to the VHA's existing CRC screening clinical reminder positively impacted aspects of usability and workflow integration but not workload. The qualitative analysis revealed broad support across participants for the design enhancements with specific suggestions for improving the reminder further. Conclusions This study demonstrates the value of a human-computer interaction evaluation in informing the redesign of information tools to foster uptake, integration into workflow, and use in clinical practice.Item Supporting mega-collaboration: a framework for the dynamic development of team culture(2011-10-19) Newlon, Christine Mae; MacDorman, Karl F.; Faiola, Anthony; Jones, Josette F.This research project, inspired by the nationwide crisis following Hurricane Katrina, identifies mega-collaboration as an emergent social phenomenon enabled by the Internet. The substantial, original contribution of this research is a mega-collaboration tool (MCT) to enable grassroots individuals and organizations to rapidly form teams, negotiate problem definitions, allocate resources, organize interventions, and mediate their efforts with those of official response organizations. The project demonstrated that a tool that facilitates the exploration of a team’s problem space can support online collaboration. It also determined the basic building blocks required to construct a mega-collaboration tool. In addition, the project demonstrated that it is possible to dynamically build the team data structure through use of the proposed interface, a finding that validates the database design at the core of the MCT. This project has made a unique contribution by proposing a new operational vision of how disaster response, and potentially many other problems, should be managed in the future.Item Untold Stories in User-Centered Design of Mobile Health: Practical Challenges and Strategies Learned From the Design and Evaluation of an App for Older Adults With Heart Failure(JMIR Publications, 2020-07-21) Cornet, Victor Philip; Toscos, Tammy; Bolchini, Davide; Ghahari, Romisa Rohani; Ahmed, Ryan; Daley, Carly; Mirro, Michael J.; Holden, Richard J.; Medicine, School of MedicineBackground User-centered design (UCD) is a powerful framework for creating useful, easy-to-use, and satisfying mobile health (mHealth) apps. However, the literature seldom reports the practical challenges of implementing UCD, particularly in the field of mHealth. Objective This study aims to characterize the practical challenges encountered and propose strategies when implementing UCD for mHealth. Methods Our multidisciplinary team implemented a UCD process to design and evaluate a mobile app for older adults with heart failure. During and after this process, we documented the challenges the team encountered and the strategies they used or considered using to address those challenges. Results We identified 12 challenges, 3 about UCD as a whole and 9 across the UCD stages of formative research, design, and evaluation. Challenges included the timing of stakeholder involvement, overcoming designers’ assumptions, adapting methods to end users, and managing heterogeneity among stakeholders. To address these challenges, practical recommendations are provided to UCD researchers and practitioners. Conclusions UCD is a gold standard approach that is increasingly adopted for mHealth projects. Although UCD methods are well-described and easily accessible, practical challenges and strategies for implementing them are underreported. To improve the implementation of UCD for mHealth, we must tell and learn from these traditionally untold stories.
