Item The business of educating the next generation of surgeons(Elsevier, 2018) Sudan, Ranjan; Olivere, Lindsey A.; Nussbaum, Michael S.; Dunnington, Gary L.; Surgery, School of MedicineSurgical education community needs to be informed about how education is funded and how it is threatened. In order to explore these issues the Association of Surgical Education convened a panel with significant experience in managing surgery departments to discuss the business of surgical education. They specifically addressed methods to recognize and reward faculty, educate residents on safety, quality and cost, and increase departmental revenue. This information is important in the current educational environment where there is an increased need for institutions to find alternate revenue streams to sustain graduate medical education. It is also important to find additional revenue streams to fund new residency slots to accommodate the greater number medical students who have been admitted to medical schools in response to meet the projected shortage of physicians.Item The Changing Landscape of U.S. Cross-Border Philanthropy-Literature Review(2019-05) Osili, Una; Horvath, Kinga Zsofia; Bergdoll, JonathanThis project has four main goals. First, it will expand knowledge on U.S. cross-border philanthropy to promote achievement of the objectives of the U.S. Government (USFS, USAID, and others) and the school. Second, it will provide a comprehensive landscape of how funding has changed over time and geography, and identify emerging trends in international partnerships and cross-border philanthropy for US Forest Service partners, United States Agency for International Development/American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (USAID/ASHA) partners, and other organizations that have a similar mission and scope. Third, it will identify the policy levers that positively or negatively influence the capacity and propensity of individuals and organizations to engage in cross-border philanthropic activities. Lastly, it will inform USAID/ASHA partners, practitioners, policymakers, scholars, and the general public of the findings from research projects and offer opportunities for greater discussion about the key topics involved.Item Crowding-out or crowding-in: The dynamics of different revenue streams(Routledge, 2020) De Wit, Arjen; Bekkers, René; Wiepking, PamalaAn important question in public economics is to what extent changes in government funding lead to changes in private donations. In this chapter we identify and summarize four theoretical perspectives answering this question: the micro-economic, institutional-political, institutional signaling, and organizational perspective. Reviewing the empirical support for each perspective, we find that none of the perspectives sufficiently explains the dispersed empirical evidence for the relationship between government financial support and individual philanthropic donations. We argue that the context in which nonprofit organizations operate is a relevant but often overlooked factor that influences how government support affects philanthropic giving. Research in this area should adopt a dynamic perspective, taking into account the dynamics of different nonprofit revenue streams (from governments, businesses, foundations, households) as well as contextual level factors like the subsector of the nonprofit sector and country characteristics.Item How to apply for a research grant: 10 tips and tricks(Elsevier, 2018-10) Harper, L.; Castagnetti, M.; Herbst, K.; Bagli, D.; Kaefer, Martin; Beckers, G.; Fossum, M.; Kalfa, N.; Urology, School of MedicineItem Institute for American Thought(Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, 2011-04-08) Pfeifer, DavidThis poster will have images of recent volumes published by the critical editions being edited by the Institute for American Thought.
