Induction of Fetal Demise Before Abortion
    (2021-04) Mahdasian-Miller, Alexandra
Induced abortion is the second most commonly performed procedure in reproductive aged women, second only to cesarean section. There are multiple settings in which induction of demise is preferred, which we will discuss throughout this presentation. But, over the years and especially over the past three decades, induction of fetal demise has been studied in response to the rise of advances in infertility medicine, specifically IVF, legislation restricting abortion provision and most recently, specifically in response to federal legislation banning “partial birth abortion”. We will aim to discuss the role in feticide and the discussion between patients and providers in deciding to include this within their abortion planning. We touch on the general risks, informed consent and basic steps to the procedure. Finally, we will touch on the specific pharmacologic agents utilized in modern iatrogenic demise, including the doses, routes, risks and most recent data.
