Item Building a community of practice: Situating data management in the transition to electronic lab notebooks(2019-05) Coates, Heather L.; Foster, Erin D.; Whipple, Elizabeth C.This poster will describe an information management initiative sponsored by the School of Medicine Research Administration. The 4-month pilot involved the rollout of an electronic lab notebook (ELN) system alongside tailored support for developing operational data management plans. Administrative drivers included improving lab efficiency and reducing institutional liability. The pilot primarily focused on the benefits of ELN use and formalizing data management practices. A key goal was to improve the collection of and access to experimental information and improve information management workflows. Integrating data management plan support as part of the ELN pilot contextualizes how the ELN fits into, and can potentially improve, existing lab workflows and highlights the unique information management needs of each research lab.Item Electronic Lab Notebooks in Practice(2023-03-29) Dolan, Levi; Whipple, Elizabeth C.Electronic lab notebooks (ELN ) are increasingly being adopted by research institutions to manage lab data organization, sharing, and preservation, and also for physical lab space efficiency. LabArchives, one popular ELN product, has been in use at Indiana University since 2019 and is supported by the Ruth Lilly Medical Library. To assess the impact of ELNs at IU since they have been introduced at IU, we analyzed LabArchives data monthly reports from the Spring 0f 2019-Fall 2022 using a Python script in order to develop new usage metrics to track. From these metrics, we identified recent “super users”. Then we reached out for their feedback on how ELNs are being used in practice. This feedback will inform future library training workshops and outreach to improve support for ELNs at IU.Item Supplemental Materials for Implementing an institution-wide electronic lab notebook initiative(2022) Foster, Erin D.; Whipple, Elizabeth C.; Rios, Gabriel R.Item The Evolution of an Electronic Lab Notebook Community(2024-05-21) Dolan, Levi; Whipple, Elizabeth C.Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN) products are intended to replace physical lab notebooks in basic science and clinical research labs. As part of supporting rigor and reproducibility in biomedical research practices, our library supports ELN implementation at our institution. We investigated how ELNs are currently being implemented by analyzing backend ELN usage data, then used the results to reach out to super users. Based on their feedback, we created a shared electronic lab notebook with reusable components and sponsored a training event led by LabArchives product staff. This sequence of library outreach and programming activities has increased the library’s understanding of our ELN community and diversified our methods for advancing best practices in data management.
