Item 3D Scanning for Small Budgets: How Local Libraries and Museums Will Play a Role in Creating a 3D Digital Library(2015-12-15) Johnson, Jennifer; Schaumberg, JDIndiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) University Library has been digitizing and providing access to community and cultural heritage collections since 2006. Varying formats include: audio, video, photographs, slides, negatives, and text (bound, loose). The library provides access to these collections using CONTENTdm. As 3D technologies become increasingly popular in libraries and museums, IUPUI University Library is exploring the workflows and processes as they relate to 3D artifacts. The library is collaborating with Online Resources Inc., a company that specializes in 3D technology to digitize artifacts from the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site. Online Resources has seen the high prices and complexity of systems hinder entrance into 3D data collection. They have made great strides in cost reduction for small budgets, and clarifying the best scanning system for the job. This presentation will demonstrate Creaform’s Go!Scan 3D while discussing collection digitization for small museums. Presenters will share insight on: key terms and features, how to filter to the correct 3D scanner, and how to reduce the cost of 3D scanning. This session will include discussion of how this technology may be implemented at the local level.Item Appropriation (?) of the Month: "The Eskimo of Our Imagination"(Intellectual Property Issues in Cultural Heritage, 2015-10-21) Cusack-McVeigh, HollyThe Intellectual Property Issues in Cultural Heritage (IPinCH) research project is an international collaboration of over 50 archaeologists, lawyers, anthropologists, museum specialists, ethicists and other specialists, and 25 partnering organizations (including, among others, Parks Canada, the World Intellectual Property Organization, the Champagne and Aishihik First Nation, and the Barunga Community Management Board, an Aboriginal organization from Australia) building a foundation to facilitate fair and equitable exchanges of knowledge relating to archaeology and cultural heritage. The project is concerned with the theoretical, ethical, and practical implications of using knowledge about the past, and how these may affect communities, researchers, and other stakeholders. Based at the Archaeology Department of Simon Fraser University, in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada, the project is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Project team members and partner organizations can be found in Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand, UK, Germany, Switzerland and South Africa. A number of partner organizations are indigenous communities. Research will follow a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach. The IPinCH project provides a foundation of research, knowledge and resources to assist scholars, academic institutions, descendant communities, policy makers, and many other stakeholders in negotiating more equitable and successful terms of research and policies through an agenda of community-based field research and topical exploration of intellectual property issues.Item A Community-Oriented Approach to school libraries and standards(2019) Lamb, Annette; Library and Information Science, School of Informatics and ComputingItem A Dozen Ways to Promote Cultural Heritage Through Image Collections(2020-04) Lamb, Annette; Library and Information Science, School of Informatics and ComputingItem “I Want to Experience the Past”: Lessons from a Visitor Survey on How Immersive Technologies Can Support Historic Interpretation(MDPI, 2021-01) Ress, Stella A.; Cafaro, Francesco; Human-Centered Computing, School of Informatics and ComputingThis paper utilizes a visitor survey conducted at an open-air museum in New Harmony, Indiana to discuss design guidelines for immersive technologies that support historic interpretation–specifically, the visitor’s ability to experience the past. We focus on three themes that emerged from the survey: (1) Visitors at this site skewed older, with nearly a quarter over 70; (2) Despite literature suggesting the opposite, visitors at New Harmony liked to learn from a tour guide; and, (3) Visitors said they wanted to “experience the past.” The very notion of a single “experience” of the past, however, is complicated at New Harmony and other historic sites because they interpret multiple periods of significance. Ultimately, our findings suggest immersive technologies must be suited for older visitors, utilize the tour guide, and facilitate visitors’ ability to “experience the past” in such a way that they feel immersed in multiple timelines at the same site.Item Of, By, and For Which People? Government and Contested Heritage in the American Midwest(Palgrave Macmillan, 2018) Kryder-Reid, Elizabeth; Zimmerman, Larry, J.Two government-owned and managed heritage sites in Indiana, USA, offer an opportunity to explore the role of governments in adjudicating the competing paradigms of value and contested uses. Strawtown Koteewi is a Hamilton County park and Mounds State Park is part of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources statewide park system. Each site has come under scrutiny in recent years. Strawtown Koteewi is one of the most significant sites in the area for understanding the history of Native peoples. After almost a decade of archaeological excavations, several Native American groups, under the auspices of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), initiated repatriation processes for the recovery of human remains, and some objected to the ongoing archaeological research. At Mounds State Park a coalition of citizens opposed a planned dam project intended to ensure a safe and plentiful water supply and to spur economic development in the area. In each case, the government entities have had to navigate the political landscapes of competing claims about the sites. These case studies expose the fissures between authorized heritage discourse and the paradigms of meaning among the diverse constituencies of the sites, and they highlight the tenuous position of public governance in privileging competing cultural, economic, and social interests. While not unique, the state and county agencies’ positions within these fields of power and their strategic choices reveal some of the barriers and constraints that limit their actions as well as the deep-seated ideologies of policies that perpetuate settler colonial politics in the control and interpretation of indigenous heritage.Item Item Sparking humanities conversations with rural community partnerships(Libraries Unlimited, 2019-03) Lamb, Annette; Library and Information Science, School of Informatics and Computing
