Item Commemorating Indiana at the 1916 Statehood Centennial Celebrations: An Examination of the Memory of Colonization and its Lingering Effects on the Indiana State Park System(2021-02) Receveur, Haley; Guiliano, Jennifer; Shrum, Rebecca; Barrows, RobertIndiana’s state park system developed as a result of state centennial celebrations in 1916. Government officials created state parks as a permanent memorial that glorified the Hoosier pioneer spirit, which celebrated actions of white colonists as they confronted challenges of the new industrial twentieth century. However, this memorialization erased the Lenni Lenape, Miami, Potawatomi, and Shawnee tribes played in the state’s history. This paper analyzes the Indiana statehood centennial celebrations as sites of erasure of Native American contributions to state and national history. It examines how Richard Lieber, the founder of the parks system, and others built the state park system to understand the ways individual state parks commemorated that Hoosier pioneer spirit at the expense of Native American voices. Turkey Run, McCormick’s Creek, Clifty Falls, Indiana Dunes, Pokagon, Spring Mill, and Lincoln State Parks are critiqued in this analysis to illustrate how each park encompasses and presents the story of colonization.Item Conservation of transcriptional sensing systems in prokaryotes: A perspective from Escherichia coli(2007-07) Salgado, Heladia; Martínez-Antonio, Agustino; Janga, Sarath ChandraThe activity of transcription factors is usually governed by allosteric physicochemical signals or metabolites, which are in turn produced in the cell or obtained from the environment by the activity of the products of effector genes. Previously, we identified a collection of more than 110 transcription factors and their corresponding effector genes in Escherichia coli K-12. Here, we introduce the notion of “triferog”, which relates to the identification of orthologous transcription factors and effector genes across genomes and show that transcriptional sensing systems known in E. coli are poorly conserved beyond Salmonella. We also find that enzymes that act as effector genes for the production of endogenous effector metabolites are more conserved than their corresponding effector genes encoding for transport and two-component systems for sensing exogenous signals. Finally, we observe that on an evolutionary scale enzymes are more conserved than their respective TFs, suggesting a homogenous cellular metabolism across genomes and the conservation of transcriptional control of critical cellular processes like DNA replication by a common endogenous signal. We hypothesize that extensive variation in the domain architecture of TFs and changes in endogenous conditions at large phylogenetic distances could be the major contributing factors for the observed differential conservation of TFs and their corresponding effector genes encoding for enzymes, causing variations in transcriptional responses across organisms.Item More than funders: The roles of philanthropic foundations in marine conservation governance(Wiley, 2023-05) Blackwatters, Jeffrey E.; Betsill, Michele; Enrici, Ash; Le Cornu, Elodie; Basurto, Xavier; Gruby, Rebecca L.; Lilly Family School of PhilanthropyEnvironmental governance scholars have overlooked philanthropic foundations as influential non-state actors. This omission, along with the continued growth in funding from private foundations for conservation issues, presents important questions about what foundations do in governance spaces. To address this gap, we examine The David and Lucile Packard Foundation's involvement in Fiji and Palau in the context of the Foundation's “Western Pacific Program”—a series of coastal and marine-related investments made from 1998 to 2020. We describe and analyze six governance roles that the Packard Foundation contributed to: funding, influencing agendas, capacity-building, convening and coordinating, facilitating knowledge, and rule-making and regulation. In documenting the Packard Foundation's governance roles, we provide scholars and practitioners a conceptual framework to more systematically and strategically think about foundations as more than funders. This research helps move the conversation around conservation philanthropy beyond binary conceptions of “good” versus “bad,” and, instead, toward deeper considerations about what foundations currently do within governance systems, how they engage with diverse practitioners, as well as what they can and should do to advance conservation goals.
