Item Career Development and Exploration in Art Therapy(2022) Welker, Taylor; Misluk, Eileen; McCullough, ShannonThis research explains and implements creating a proposal with art therapy and career counseling for high school systems while working with adolescents. Within the literature review, existing research has demonstrated that career counseling yields benefits in professional planning and satisfaction. The adolescence stage has many expected developmental tasks, including choosing a career about individual traits and strengths. Research also addresses influences relating to adolescent needs that may help or hinder career choices. To manage educational settings and conditions, the research discusses benefits and limitations. While research has provided understanding for career counseling, limited research combines both art therapy and career development. Art therapy research has highlighted many goals about self-awareness and empowering individuals to understand themselves. Comparisons of research on art therapy and career counseling provide evidence and information to create a program proposal for individual students. Career theories such as Holland’s Theory of Vocational Choice and Social Cognitive Career Theory go in-depth on clients' needs in this process. These theories also tie in three themes explored from existing art therapy literature, including identity, self-efficacy, and self-esteem.Item Computer-Supported Career Development in The Future of Work(ACM, 2018-11) Hui, Julie; Gerber, Elizabeth M.; Dombrowski, Lynn; Gray, Mary L.; Marcus, Adam; Salehi, Niloufar; Human-Centered Computing, School of Informatics and ComputingAs people increasingly work different jobs, the respon-sibility of building long-term career satisfaction and stability increasingly falls more on the workers rather than individual employers. With technologies playing a central role in how people choose and access employ-ment opportunities, it is necessary to understand how online technologies are shaping career development. We bring together leading human-computer interaction researchers, industry members, and community organ-izers, who have worked with systems and people across the socio-economic spectrum during the career devel-opment process. We will discuss research on the role of online technologies in career development, including but not limited to topics in crowd work, social media sites, and freelance work sites.Item Experienced Practitioners’ Beliefs Utilized to Create a Successful Massage Therapist Conceptual Model: a Qualitative Investigation(2017) Kennedy, Anne B.; Munk, Niki; Health Sciences, School of Health and Rehabilitation SciencesBackground: The massage therapy profession in the United States has grown exponentially, with 35% of the profession’s practitioners in practice for three years or less. Investigating personal and social factors with regard to the massage therapy profession could help to identify constructs needed to be successful in the field. Purpose: This data-gathering exercise explores massage therapists’ perceptions on what makes a successful massage therapist that will provide guidance for future research. Success is defined as supporting oneself and practice solely through massage therapy and related, revenue-generating field activity. Participants and Setting: Ten successful massage therapy practitioners from around the United States who have a minimum of five years of experience. Research Design: Semistructured qualitative interviews were used in an analytic induction framework; index cards with preidentified concepts printed on them were utilized to enhance conversation. An iterative process of interview coding and analysis was used to determine themes and subthemes. Results: Based on the participants input, the categories in which therapists needed to be successful were organized into four main themes: effectively establish therapeutic relationships, develop massage therapy business acumen, seek valuable learning environments and opportunities, and cultivate strong social ties and networks. The four themes operate within specific contexts (e.g., regulation and licensing requirements in the therapists’ state), which may also influence the success of the massage therapist. Conclusions: The model needs to be tested to explore which constructs explain variability in success and attrition rate. Limitations and future research implications are discussed.Item Gender Differences in Question-Asking at the 2022 American Society of Nephrology Annual Kidney Week Meeting(Wolters Kluwer, 2023-10-09) Jasuja, Ishan; Vanderkolk, Julia; Weston, Eliza; Arrowood, Haley I.; Vore, Autumn; Starr, Michelle C.; Pediatrics, School of MedicineItem Impact of Innovative Technology-Related Interventions on K–12 Students' STEM Career-Related Outcomes: A Meta-Analysis(American Educational Research Association (AERA), 2022-04-21) Li, Yue; Dixon, Maressa; Jacobsen, Anna Liss; Maltbie, Anna; Woodruff, SarahThis meta-analysis study reviews and synthesizes research and evaluation findings demonstrating the effects of integrating innovative technologies and technology-based learning experiences in STEM education on K-12 students’ STEM career-related outcomes. This study synthesizes a body of research from 1995 to the present, across characteristics of technology-based STEM education interventions, learning contexts, student demographics, and study designs. This study develops an understanding of the extent to which the effects of technology-based STEM education interventions are different for students who are traditionally underserved and underrepresented in STEM education. Findings suggest such interventions have small, positive effects on students’ STEM career outcomes. Interventions serving underrepresented students had larger influences on students’ career outcomes than those serving general student populations.
